NATIONAL BUTTON DAY
National Button Day on November 16th celebrates the function of buttons and the hobby of button collection. Step aside zippers, laces, and snaps. Honor the button.
Founded in 1938, the National Button Society recognized button collecting as an organized hobby. Both novice and advanced button collectors celebrate the enjoyment of collecting on this day.
Do you remember your grandmother or your mother snipping the buttons off shirts headed for the rag basket? Those buttons are often collected in jars or tins. Maybe you even played games or strung them for ornaments and crafts. The buttons were fun to stack into piles, sort by color or size, or scatter and slide across the floor or table making up different games each time.
Crafters across the country utilize buttons in creative ways, too. They are some of the best at finding new uses for old items. There are thousands of button collectors in the United States.
Humans have made buttons from a variety of materials. Ancient humans formed buttons from natural and readily available substances such as stone, shell, bone, clay, or wood. In more modern times, metals, plastics, resins, and acrylics have been used. While buttons were usually functional to fasten two pieces of cloth together, they also served as decoration.
While buttons today can be simple disks with two or four holes allowing a needle and thread to pass through, button makers create more elaborate designs. If you can imagine it, there's probably a button like it. From animals and food to iconic buildings and famous people, button makers make them. They're colorful and fun. While the fun ones may be less practical, they still function.

NOLA-PS Sites Lycée Français de la Nouvelle-Orléans to Homer Plessy building in the French Quarter
(New Orleans – November 15, 2024) — NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) has announced that Lycée Français de la Nouvelle-Orléans (LFNO), a Type 2 charter school, will move into the historic Little Red Schoolhouse campus in the French Quarter, known as Homer Plessy Building at 721 St. Philip St. This move follows the district’s annual Facilities Siting Process.
NOLA-PS Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams, who oversees this process, made the decision to house Lycée Français at the Homer Plessy Building. This aligns with Orleans Parish School Board policy which allows the Superintendent to make such decisions without requiring a vote from the Board. The siting became effective on November 14, 2024.
Lycée Français is a Type 2 charter authorized by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). Like all Type 2 charters, Lycée Français participates in Orleans Parish's common enrollment process but operates independently of NOLA-PS governance. The Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) often leases space to Type 2 charters.
LFNO’s leadership applied for and was granted the use of the Homer Plessy Building through the siting process. NOLA-PS encourages all charter schools to maintain transparent communication with their communities about such transitions.
Ongoing Commitment to Facility Safety and Upgrades
The Homer Plessy Building, known for its deep roots in New Orleans history, was recently renovated as part of NOLA-PS' commitment to ensuring the safety and functionality of district facilities. An investment of approximately $5 million was made in repairs to the campus to ensure the building remains fully operational.
Dr. Williams emphasized the safety and suitability of the site, noting that scholars had been enrolled in the building as recently as 2022.
Clarifying Ownership and Tenancy
Addressing public concerns, it’s important to clarify that Lycée Français will not be purchasing the Homer Plessy Building. Instead, LFNO will remain a tenant, as they are currently in the McNair building on Carrollton Ave., which is also owned by OPSB. The school’s transition into the French Quarter facility aligns with NOLA-PS’ goal of maximizing the use of its school properties to meet community needs.

Victoria GewirzCan a portrait be abstract? What truly defines a portrait—clear, recognizable details, or the potential for abstraction to blur and transform familiar features? This exhibition delves into the complex nature of portraiture, blending abstraction, surrealism, and realism to challenge the boundaries of identity, memory, and emotion. The exhibition invites viewers to question what is figurative, what is natural, and how form can be reimagined. Through diverse photographic techniques, including cyanotypes, stereography, film, and digital photography, the works delve into the overlap between portraiture and creative interpretation.

Hurricane in a Bad Mood - Sue Owen
Join us with Sue Owen reading and signing her new book, HURRICANE IN A BAD MOOD, her fifth book of poetry. Owen lived and taught in Louisiana for more than thirty years, and continues to offer poems rich with her provocative dark humor.
Here she explores her familiar themes of fear, danger, and death, but with a new emphasis on the threat of global warming and a future of possible doom. Her vivid curiosity, displayed in the examination of language, proverbial sayings, and the personification of inanimate objects, extends to nature’s fury, as in the title poem, “Hurricane in a Bad Mood.” In addition, she depicts the many victims of oil spills in “When Pelicans Cannot Fly” and “The Gulf Turns into Tears.” As in her earlier books, one of which won a national competition, the poems range in tone from the playful to the prophetic, often containing flashes of wit, as in “Last Nail in the Coffin” and “Even the Dead Do It.” Whether ethereal or earthy, these poems encourage the reader to remain aware of our inevitable fate, but also to confront without despair the environmental challenges of our difficult century.
Sue Owen taught as the poet-in-residence at Louisiana State University and received the Professional Artist of the Year Award from the Louisiana State Arts Council. Her four previous books of poetry are Nursery Rhymes for the Dead, The Book of Winter, My Doomsday Sampler, and The Devil’s Cookbook.

‘Cajun Coral’ could reshape former oil and gas platforms along the Gulf Coast
A decommissioned oil rig site off Grand Isle offers a new shallow-water template for the Louisiana Rigs-to-Reef programs. Where rigs once stood, the 3D-printed concrete could create bustling coastal reefs.
by Delaney Dryfoos
Workers use a crane to place 500 pieces of 400-pound “Cajun Coral” near Barataria Waterway to replace a decommissioned oil and gas platform with an artificial reef. Photo by La’Shance Perry | The Lens
Off the coast of Grand Isle, Louisiana, “Cajun Coral” – a highly customizable type of 3D-printed concrete – is slowly attracting sea life.
Late this summer, a barge brought 500 pieces of Cajun Coral just east of the Barataria Waterway, which connects the Gulf of Mexico and Grand Isle to Lafitte and New Orleans. The coral modules, each weighing more than 400 pounds, were placed into the waterway individually by crane to encourage the growth of more than 10,000 square feet of living reef.
The new reef was built on a former oil and gas platform called Hotel Sid that once stood in these waters.
In Grand Isle, a fishing town situated on a small barrier island, fishermen favored the waters surrounding the platform because its hard substrate supported an abundance of speckled trout. When Hotel Sid was removed last year, the trout lost a habitat they had come to rely on.
One angler, in particular, noticed the void left by removing the platform and set out to replace the lost habitat with an artificial reef. Todd Graves, who founded Raising Cane’s near Louisiana State University in 1996, grew up fishing around the Hotel Sid platform and saw the drop in fish population last year. That prompted him to contribute to the $500,000 artificial reef, dubbed the Raising Cane’s Hotel Sid reef.
Raising Cane’s Hotel Sid is the 52nd artificial reef built along Louisiana’s disappearing coast through CCA Louisiana, the state chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association, a nonprofit founded in the 1980s to promote responsible management of the state’s fisheries resources.
Hotel Sid was installed with funding from Graves, CCA and the Artificial Reef Trust Fund at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF). At the new reef’s installation, Graves announced a further donation, for a total of $500,000, to the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Louisiana, to create four additional artificial reefs around Grand Isle.

Careful! These 12 words don’t really mean what everybody thinks
Published on February 12, 2024
Credit: Thiébaud Faix
Many expressions and terms from foreign languages lose their essence in translation when uttered or written in English. Language is not merely a tool for communication; it encapsulates cultural nuances and unique experiences.
Join us as we dive into the intricacies of linguistic diversity, revealing the beauty and subtlety that can be lost when these foreign gems are transposed into the English lexicon.
1Entrée
Credit: Jay Wennington
In the American culinary context, Entrée commonly refers to the main course of a meal. However, the true essence of the word in French translates to "entrance" or "entry," which refers to a first course or an appetizer.
English speakers may unknowingly miss the nuanced French understanding, but French tourists in America are probably already well aware of this situation before ordering food.
2En masse
Credit: Lance Lozano
Keeping on with the French language exploration, we come across the term En Masse, which, in its original language, means "in a mass". While English speakers commonly understand it as a collective gathering or action, the original French expression goes beyond mere numerical quantity, implying a unified, synchronized movement, emphasizing harmony and cohesion within a group.
Lost in translation, this nuance of orchestrated unity is often overshadowed by a simplistic focus on numbers when suggested by its English counterpart.
3Flak
Credit: Cibi Chakravarthi
Originally an abbreviation for Fliegerabwehrkanone, meaning "aircraft defense cannon" in German, "Flak" in English has been repurposed to signify criticism or disapproval, particularly in informal contexts.
The shift from a military, technical term to a colloquial expression alters its essence, losing the gravity and historical context embedded in its German roots. This transformation not only obscures the connection to anti-aircraft weaponry but also dilutes the term's inherent seriousness, giving it a lighter meaning.
4Sayonara
Credit: Jan Tinneberg
When we take a deeper look into the linguistic intricacies between Japanese and English, we unravel the essence of the term sayonara and the nuances that evade an exact translation.
While commonly interpreted as a simple farewell, "sayonara" in Japanese carries a weight of finality and a sense of parting that transcends the casual connotations of the English "goodbye." Rooted in cultural context, this term signifies a more permanent departure, often linked to deep emotions or farewells of a more profound nature.
5Élan
Credit: Braden Collum
Élan is definitely not the most used French word amongst English speakers, but it does pop up occasionally in conversation. It makes this list because, while commonly translated as "enthusiasm" or "momentum" in English, élan in French encapsulates a more profound sense of spirited energy and impetus.
The original term carries a connotation of a dynamic force, an internal drive that propels action with ardor. Lost in translation, the subtleties of this emotional fervor are often diluted. "Élan" embodies a spirited passion, an inner zeal that goes beyond mere enthusiasm, and its unique cultural resonance can be overlooked when expressed in English.
6Look for the cat´s fifth leg
Credit: Manja Vitolic
If expressed literally, some foreign terms aren’t simply lost in translation but beyond translation. The Argentinean expression buscarle la quinta pata al gato, translates to "look for the cat's fifth leg". This curious expression, rich with cultural flavor, denotes the tendency to overcomplicate matters or seek unnecessary complications.
In its native Spanish, the phrase carries a humorous undertone, emphasizing the absurdity of searching for an extra leg on a cat. However, when translated into English, the idiom loses its playful charm and becomes a literal quest for a nonexistent appendage, missing the cultural context that infuses it with humor and insight.
7Like playing piano to a cow
Credit: Markus Gjengaar
Literally meaning "like playing the piano to a cow," this Chinese idiom conveys the futility of explaining something to someone who lacks the capacity to comprehend or appreciate it.
The inherent humor and cultural resonance in the original Mandarin phrase may elude English speakers, as the idiom plays with the absurdity of attempting a futile task.
8To sing the apple
Credit: Edward Cisneros
In the world of French Canadian expressions, the intriguing phrase chanter la pomme carries a cultural resonance often lost in translation. Literally translated as "to sing the apple," this idiom extends beyond its literal interpretation in English.
In its original context, the phrase conveys the act of sweet-talking or praising someone to gain favor or approval. The metaphorical association with singing to an apple adds a whimsical touch to the concept of flattery. Yet, when transposed into English, the idiom loses the playful imagery, and the cultural charm embedded in "chanter la pomme" may be overlooked.
9Let a frog out of your mouth
Credit: Adam Currie
The Finnish expression "letting a frog out your mouth" makes no sense when uttered in English, but it does have a logical explanation in its native tongue, where it means "to say something wrong by mistake which can embarrass or upset someone".
The metaphorical picture of releasing a frog adds a playful touch to the idea of articulating something inconvenient. However, when translated literally into English, the charm of the metaphor is lost, and the idiom's cultural richness escapes comprehension.
10If you´re born to be a tamale, the leaves will fall from the sky
Credit: Stefan Lehner
The Mexican phrase Si naciste para tamal, elote caerá del cielo, means "If you're born to be a tamale, the leaves will fall from the sky".
This idiom is a poetic way of expressing destiny and the idea that if something is meant to be, the universe will conspire to make it happen. The imagery of tamale-making, a cherished tradition in Mexican culture, adds a layer of metaphorical richness.
11A dog in church
Credit: Jamie Street
An idiom that makes no sense in English, the Italian phrase un cane in chiesa, meaning "a dog in a church," describes a sense of discomfort or feeling out of place in a particular situation.
The humor and vivid picture of a dog in a sacred space add a fun touch to the expression. However, when directly translated into English, the idiom loses its cultural connotations.
12Pour water over someone's head
Credit: Jamie Street
While the literal translation of "pouring water over someone's head" might seem senseless in English, the actual meaning in its original Tamil is "to cut off a relationship", which could very well be a logical outcome if someone pours water over somebody else's head.
Beyond the literal interpretation, this Tamil idiom carries a symbolic weight, signifying a moment of frustration or exasperation. The act of pouring water over someone's head becomes a vivid symbol of releasing pent-up emotions or expressing discontent. However, when rendered in English, the idiom loses its cultural depth, and the resonance of water as a cathartic release may not be fully grasped.

NATIONAL FAST FOOD DAY
On November 16th, food lovers get a dose of their favorite convenience food. Whether they use the drive-thru, dine-in, or get it to go, National Fast Food Day calls for us to grilled, fried, and broiled menu staples.
First popularized in the United States in the 1950s, fast food is considered any meal with low preparation time and served to a customer in a packaged form. The meal makes for quick dine-in, take-out or take-away. Most fast-food restaurants offer drive-thru service.
Merriam-Webster dictionary first recognized the term "fast food" in 1951.
Following World War I, automobiles became popular and more affordable. At that time, restaurants introduced the drive-in.
Much like today's food trucks, Walter Anderson first began selling hamburgers out of an old streetcar body at a Wichita intersection. Despite the limited menu, the hamburgers were a crowd-pleaser. When the popularity of his hamburgers grew, Anderson partnered with E.W. Ingram and opened the first White Castle in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas. These enterprising restauranteurs opened the first fast-food business, selling hamburgers for 5¢ each.
The United States hosts the largest fast food industry in the world. American fast-food restaurants are located in over 100 countries.
Fun fact: The first Happy Meal was served in June of 1979.
While fast food began as sandwiches and sides, the menus expanded over time. Today fast food includes fish, a variety of fried chicken, tacos, pizza, and a wide selection of sides. Sodas quench the thirst and desserts sweeten the menu. From ice cream and shakes to pies and cakes, fast food delivers.
As times changed, restaurants added breakfast items to the menu, too. Expanding their hours increased their workforce and their menu options, as well. However, not all fast-food chains offer breakfast.

Henry Ford built a car out of hemp plastic that ran on hemp fuel almost a century ago.
Ford's 1941 bioplastic Model T was made of hemp, flax, wheat, and spruce pulp, which made the car lighter than fiberglass and ten times tougher than steel, wrote the New York Times on February 2, 1941. The car ran on ethanol made from hemp or other agricultural waste.

In 1924, the Blattnerphone, an early magnetic tape recorder, revolutionized the way audio was recorded and played back. Developed by Dr. Kurt Stille and Louis Blattner, this innovative technology was one of the first to use steel tape for magnetic recording, which allowed for more reliable and higher-quality sound reproduction compared to the previously used methods like phonograph records. The device was a breakthrough in the field of audio technology, offering a level of fidelity and convenience that had previously been unattainable.
The Blattnerphone was primarily used by the BBC and other broadcasters to record radio programs for later rebroadcasting, especially for international transmission. Before the advent of tape recorders, radio broadcasts had to be done live or recorded onto fragile discs, which were cumbersome to transport and had limited durability. The Blattnerphone’s magnetic tape allowed for better sound quality and the ability to store recordings for future use, enabling broadcasters to transmit programs to other countries and preserve content for later airings. This capability was especially important for organizations like the BBC, which had a global reach and needed a reliable system for recording and distributing their broadcasts.
While the Blattnerphone was an important step in the development of magnetic recording technology, it was not without its challenges. The steel tape used in the recorder was prone to stretching and wear, and the devices were large and expensive. Nonetheless, it paved the way for future advancements in audio recording, eventually leading to the development of more practical and efficient systems, including reel-to-reel tape recorders and, later, the cassette tape. The Blattnerphone remains a fascinating part of the history of sound recording, marking the beginning of a technological evolution that would transform the media and entertainment industries.

The Leonid Meteor Shower is headed our way! Look for roughly 10 meteors per minute to grace our night skies on November 17-18. Best time to spot 'em is predawn on the 18th, and you're going to get the best views looking towards the south.
The bright moonlight might make it hard to see the meteors this year, but follow these tips from astronomer Bob Berman, and you'll know everything you need to know to get the best glimpse.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!
Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!
Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 18
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Friday Night Wine School - Perfect Wines for A Grateful Gathering
Fri Nov 15, 2024 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM CST Swirl, 70119
Join us for our attendance-limited, signup-only Friday night tasting! Tastings are held on the back patio with a max of 10 people per time slot.
No matter what you call it, the 4th Thursday in November has always been one of our favorite holidays at Swirl because it is one single day where we stop everything we're doing and celebrate life and relationships with food, wine, family and great friends. There are no obligatory presents involved, just maybe the gift of something you've cooked, a bottle of nice wine for the host and your presence at the table. We consider it our job to make you look good and drink well on that special Thursday. So this year we are getting a headstart for those of you who like to prepare early!
Julia Child famously said that "a party without cake is just a meeting," and we believe a dinner party without a good bottle of wine is just another meal. While we love putting together a crowd-pleasing menu and surrounding ourselves with those we hold dear, a great bottle of wine is the icing on the cake and we know that sometimes making those choices can be overwhelming. So we hope you'll join Wesley from Vino Wholesale as we taste through some of our favorite food-friendly wines that would be just perfect for your gathering. There's sure to be a sparkling, whites, reds, maybe a rosé? We'll discuss food pairings so bring your questions and even your menus, we are here to help!
Speaking of food pairings...this year we are doing a holiday recipe challenge! Send us your favorite, tried and true recipe for your gathering. We'll pick our 5 favorite entries and pair wines with them to present at our Grateful Gatherings tasting on 11/15. We're looking for appetizers, mains, sides and desserts - vegan, vegetarian, meat, fish, poultry, whatever...Wesley and I will select the recipes and pair the wines. Send me an email, beth@swirlnola.com, with the subject "Holiday Recipe Challenge" to enter your recipe - complete recipes only please, with ingredients and instructions, we will share these the night of the event and send you our pairing recommendation if your recipe gets chosen.
-All ticket sales are final.
-We will hold our tastings outside on the patio from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Fridays weather permitting, if it rains we move inside to the back of the shop.
-Your $5 tasting fee is refunded when you purchase a bottle of wine from the tasting. Limit 1 refund per bottle per customer.
-Please arrive 5 minutes early for your time slot, as we may not be able to move you to another spot.
-No waiting in line for your taste of wine in a plastic cup and snippet of info. During your time slot, you will have the presenter's undivided attention as you learn about and taste the wines from Riedel glassware.
-When your tasting is over, you can browse and shop or enjoy a glass or bottle at our indoor and outdoor tables.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
