Saving lives since 1948

A Letter from the President

Abram and Moxie: A Love Letter

We recently received a beautiful note from Abram Ozeck regarding his dog Moxie, adopted from The Animal Haven in 2012, who recently passed away. Abram wrote "Moxie was the most amazing dog. There was not a person that did not love him. He made appearances at many charitable events and helped raise money for needy people and he later came to my office every day with me and was able to meet all of my clients. He went white water rafting, he traveled the country with me. Moxie was called my shadow. Everywhere I went he was with me. A true pal." Abram also wrote Moxie "was a part of our family. He was blood to us. How smart he was led people to believe that he understood everything, and I mean everything they said to him. Again, the number of people he influenced was radical." Moxie recently died from a very aggressive cancer, leaving a hole that "could fill the grand canyon" in the hearts of Abram and his family. Despite his tremendous grief and sadness, Abram wrote "I don't know where I would be and many other people if it wasn't for Moxie." Abram thanked us for providing people with animals that give "us the most amazing memories anyone could ever have. You give us a best friend/partner. You change lives." We want to thank Abram for this beautiful tribute to Moxie and for letting us know about the indelible impact he had on their lives. Although we were sad to learn of Moxie's passing, we are so grateful that he was so cherished and dearly loved.

Focus On: Raggedy Ann

Meet Raggedy Ann! This beautiful cat is about one and a half years old and is an extremely affectionate little girl who loves attenton. Raggedy Ann has feline leukemia (FeLV), which weakens a cat’s immune system, making her more prone to illnesses that can become fatal. FeLV is passed only from cat to cat (humans, dogs and other animals cannot contract it). We are looking for a permanent foster for this beautiful girl (a person or family with no other cats or only cats that are FeLV positive) so she can live out the rest of her life in a loving home. We will pay for all of her medical needs and treatments. If you are someone who has the compassion it takes to bring Raggedy Ann into your heart and home and surround her with love, please contact us at theanimalhavenstaff@gmail.com.

Volunteer of the Month: Lynnsey Spader

The Animal Haven staff and volunteers will tell you that the adoption of a cat or dog is typically a bittersweet event. There is joy that the animal is being adopted but also sadness when the animal walks out the door for the last time. "The animals become part of your soul," said Lynnsey Spader, who has been volunteering at The Animal Haven for almost three years, socializing cats, doing administrative chores and helping with its social media accounts. Lynnsey says that The Animal Haven is more than a temporary home for cats and dogs. As a no-kill shelter, rescued animals will live out their lives there if they are not adopted. "We have numerous animals that end up being 'lifers' for a variety of reasons and this becomes their home," said the North Haven resident. One such animal that Lynnsey remembers fondly was Yolo, a cat with a "very spicy" personality "who did not like people." After many attempts to get close to Yolo, the cat eventually let Lynnsey pet her. "It was like hitting the lottery," Lynnsey said. "I was honored to be one of the only people that could get close to her.'' Yolo lived at the shelter until she became very ill and was taken home by another volunteer, who cared for her until she died. "What I hope people take away from this story is that while Yolo spent most of her life at the shelter, never getting her 'own home,' I believe that the love at The Animal Haven made the shelter her home," Lynnsey said. "I still sees signs from Yolo that she's there and watching over us." We thank you, Lynnsey, for watching over Yolo and all the other animals under our care!
