Climate Change & Natural Environment: Protection & Adaptation Approved as a Council Priority for 2023
|
Each year, the City Council reviews its priorities at its annual Council Retreat. During this year’s Council Retreat, “Climate Change and the Natural Environment: Protection and Adaptation” was selected as one of four Council priorities for 2023. The Council Priorities guide resource allocation and staff workplans for the coming year and will receive special attention from City Council.
“Climate Change – Protection and Adaptation” was a Council priority in 2022. This year “Natural Environment” was added to the priority. Objectives include capital improvements for flood protection, natural environment and biodiversity, approving the Sustainability and Climate Action Plan update, and expanding the heat pump water heater program, among others. High Energy Prices –
How to Save on Heating Costs
|
|
 |
Energy prices were extremely high this winter, due in part to a sharp rise in the cost for the City and other regional utilities to purchase natural gas. Gain answers to frequent questions about this year's high utility bills from Dean Batchelor, Palo Alto Utilities Director. Energy efficiency can help lower your utility costs and consume less fossil fuels.
Here are some tips to improve energy efficiency:
- Lower the temperature on your thermostat. Winter daytime recommended temperature is about 68° when you are at home.
- Open your curtains to let daytime sunshine naturally warm your home and remember to close them at night.
- Use less hot water to save on water heating costs. Switching to an electric heat pump water heater can also help you save.
- Weather strip and caulk the seals around your doors and windows to eliminate drafts.

Safe Active Winter Transportation Tips
|
|
During dark, winter months (and all year round), review these safety tips to help support healthy, sustainable, and active commutes to work, school, and beyond.
- Whether as a pedestrian, bicyclist, or driver, please remember to stop at all stop signs.
- Be alert at all intersections, for example, look out for pedestrians in the crosswalk or bicyclists in the bike lane when turning right on a green light.
-
Waterproof your commute with bicycling rain gear or consider riding the bus or taking Caltrain instead of jumping in a car.
