'Every Moment Matters' for our Volunteers

April 14 – 20 marked National Volunteer Week, which recognizes the vital roles volunteers play in our communities. The theme for this year’s National Volunteer Week is “Every Moment Matters”. It highlights the importance of every volunteer and each contribution they make at a moment when we need their support more than ever. The sharing of time, skills, empathy, and creativity is vital to the inclusivity, strength, and wellbeing of our communities.

This week and every week we recognize all of our volunteers and celebrate each contribution they’re making at a moment when we need their support more than ever.

Thank you to all of our CCCKL volunteers!

Join One of Our Boards of Directors

Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes and the Community Care Foundation are excited to announce openings for both our Boards of Directors. As a Director on one of our Boards, you will have a meaningful role in steering the future of the organization and positioning resources as we embark on “The Road Ahead” through our progressive three-year Strategic Plan.

Hear from current Board Chairs Julie Johnson and Sheryl Benson below about why they joined us!

Julie Johnson

Community Care Board Chair

What is your professional background?

Local dentist

Why did you choose to volunteer with the Board of Directors?

I knew that CCCKL was an important part of our community. Every week we have several patients arrive for their appointments with the help of Community Care drivers. When there was an opening on the Board of Directors, I thought this would be a very meaningful way to contribute to the welfare of my hometown.

What is your favourite part about volunteering on the Board of Directors?

I always feel empowered at the end of CCCKL events and meetings. The dedication of the Directors, other volunteers, and the staff makes me feel like we are making a difference in the lives of our clients.

Is there anything else you would like people to know?

All of our Directors are welcoming and approachable. We are willing to help with any questions or hesitations you may have about joining our Board. We have great Directors who volunteer to mentor new recruits if that is helpful for you. This is such a fulfilling role. I have learned so much and met many wonderful people.

Sheryl Benson

Community Care Foundation Board Chair

What is your professional background?

Financial Planner for Investment & Retirement Advice at RBC

Why did you choose to volunteer with the Board of Directors?

I was looking for a volunteer opportunity to support the community with the City of Kawartha Lakes. When reviewing all of the work that Community Care does in supporting the members of our vast community it was a great fit.

What is your favourite part about volunteering on the Board of Directors?

My favourite part of this volunteer opportunity is witnessing the success in the well being of our community members and the multiple support systems for them within Community Care. From the support of our volunteer drivers to the complex health offerings, including Dental and our Health Team.

Is there anything else you would like people to know?

Volunteering for Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes has been a very informative and rewarding journey. Participating in supporting the new Community Health Centre building and seeing all of the staff and volunteers within the community makes me very proud of all that they accomplish on a day to day basis.

Join Julie and Sheryl and join one of our Boards to enhance the health and quality of life for the people of Kawartha Lakes. Visit our website at www.ccckl.ca/volunteer to learn more and apply!

March for Meals 2024

On March 28 we were honoured to be joined by members from the Kawartha Lakes Police Service, Paramedic Service, Fire Service, and OPP to deliver Meals on Wheels together for March for Meals 2024.

March for Meals is an annual campaign that aims to increase awareness and community engagement of available services. Our first responders had the opportunity to come along with us to deliver meals and speak to to clients throughout Kawartha Lakes. We would like to extend a warm thank you to all that came to offer their support!

The Power of Paws and Claws

On March 26, 2024, the Clinical Social Wellness group at our Community Health Centre welcomed a furry friend and his owner for a visit! Wynter, a Border Collie, and Jackie joined us from the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program for some comfort, companionship and conversation. Group participants learned about the Therapy Dog program and about Wynter’s story, and we talked about creative ways to include animal interaction in our lives. We enjoyed some pet stories and some laughs as Wynter won us over with his calm spirit and different coloured eyes. We are so grateful for Jackie and Wynter visiting us, and we hope to have them come again!

Adult Day Program Celebrates Scotland Day

We had the privilege welcoming bagpiper Graham, son of one of our volunteers, to come visit our ADP clients this month and play the bagpipes for ‘Scotland Day’.

The bagpipes unfortunately only have one volume so we had Graham play outside the doors of our APD at 55 Mary Street in Lindsay, which ended up attracting passing vehicles.

Several cars pulled into the parking lot and stopped to take in his amazing musical talent.

A spouse of one of our clients also attended on this day and they joined in for a dance together.

Thank you to Graham for entertaining our ADP clients and for sharing your talents!

How long have you worked for CCCKL?

14 years

What is your favourite part about working for CCCKL?

The people that work for CCCKL are amazing! I don't say this because it's the thing you say about your workplace colleagues, but because I have had the best experiences with the people I work with. The support from peers and management is genuine.

What hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?

I'm an artist, and a competitor in sports, particularly soccer. I love trying new food and have been described as a foodie. I love nature and teach yoga as a side job.

Is there anything else you would like people to know?

I think it would be surprising for people to know that I was a PSW before being a nurse, and a outreach resource worker before that, and a daycare owner before that, and a Sign Language Communicator before that, and prior to all that I held 7 different jobs all at once that included working as a Respite worker for several families, EA, Supportive Housing staff for Community Living, a nanny and an after hours daycare programmer.

How long have you worked for CCCKL?

2 years

What is your favourite part about working for CCCKL?

I enjoy being able to work with departments all across CCCKL and help to bring a team's vision to life. We have many invaluable programs and services that we offer to the community, and I enjoy finding unique and creative ways to let Kawartha Lakes residents know about all we have to offer! Make sure you're following our social media pages so you don't miss any updates from CCCKL!

What hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?

I recently obtained my private pilot license and like to fly for fun out of the local Kawartha Lakes Municipal Airport. I also have a little Corgi and love taking him to the Ken Reid dog park or going on long road trips to find new walking trails.
