Your October Home Comfort Checklist from Cooper Climate Control

The rest of the country is pulling out sweaters, drinking hot cider and posting pictures of colorful leaves.

Ahhh, October in Arizona. 🍂🌵

Meanwhile, Arizona is standing outside at 2:00 PM asking:

“Is 90-something degrees considered sweater weather yet?” 😂

But don't let our confused Arizona seasons fool you. October is actually one of the BEST times to give your HVAC system and your home a little attention.

Your AC has spent months battling Arizona heat like it had something personal to prove. Before we transition into cooler weather, let's make sure your system — and the rest of your home — are ready.

First Thing First: Thank Your AC

Seriously.

That poor thing has been working overtime since spring.

Arizona cooling systems endure months of heavy use, and dirt, restricted airflow and neglected maintenance can make HVAC equipment work harder than necessary.

ENERGY STAR recommends professional pre-season HVAC maintenance and notes that fall is an ideal time to have heating equipment checked before winter.

Translation:

Your HVAC system survived another Arizona summer. Don't just ghost it until next June.

October is a great time to schedule your:

🍁 FALL/WINTER PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

October – January

A professional maintenance visit can help identify small issues before they become inconvenient — and potentially expensive — problems.

Because nobody wants to discover the heater doesn't work on the first cold Arizona morning.

You know the morning we're talking about.

Yesterday: 87°

Tomorrow morning: 47°

Arizona: SURPRISE!

YOUR OCTOBER DIY HOME COMFORT CHECKLIST

There are a few things homeowners can do between professional maintenance visits.

✅ Check Your Air Filter

Your HVAC filter had a very busy summer.

Dust. Pet hair. Arizona dirt. More dust. And somehow… even MORE dust.

ENERGY STAR recommends checking HVAC filters monthly and cleaning or replacing them when dirty. A dirty filter restricts airflow and makes your system work harder.

Cooper Tip: If you pull your filter out and can't remember what color it originally was…

👀

It's probably time.

✅ Check Your Thermostat

October is a good time to review your thermostat schedule as temperatures begin changing.

If you're still running your thermostat like it's July even though mornings and evenings are getting cooler, you may be missing opportunities to reduce unnecessary cooling.

SRP also recommends using the AUTO fan setting rather than continuously running the HVAC fan.

✅ Look Around Your Outdoor Unit

Remove leaves, weeds and debris from around the outdoor equipment and make sure airflow isn't obstructed.

Your condenser needs breathing room.

It does not need an Arizona tumbleweed moving in and signing a lease. 🌵😂

💨 YOUR AC MAY NOT BE THE PROBLEM

Does one bedroom feel perfect while another feels like it's located somewhere near the surface of the sun?

Before blaming the HVAC equipment, consider something customers often overlook:

YOUR DUCTWORK.

According to ENERGY STAR, a typical home's duct system can lose roughly 20%–30% of the air moving through it because of leaks, holes and poor connections.

That conditioned air you paid for?

It could be cooling your attic instead of your living room.

Signs that may warrant a Duct Assessment include:

• Rooms that are consistently hotter or colder than others

• Higher-than-expected utility bills

• Weak airflow from certain vents

• Excessive dust

• Visible damaged, disconnected or kinked ductwork

• An HVAC system that seems to run forever

A Cooper Climate Control Duct Assessment can help identify airflow and duct-system problems that may be affecting comfort and efficiency.

🏠 DON'T JUST CONDITION YOUR HOME.

KEEP THE CONDITIONED AIR INSIDE IT.

☀️ WHAT'S HAPPENING ABOVE YOUR CEILING?

Here's another part of the house that doesn't get much attention:

The attic.

During an Arizona summer, your attic takes an absolute beating.

And the insulation separating that extremely hot space from your comfortable living area plays an important role in your home's overall energy performance.

If insulation is inadequate, damaged or uneven, your HVAC system may have to work harder to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.

That means October is an excellent time to consider an:

🏠 INSULATION ASSESSMENT

Especially if you've noticed:

  • Hot or cold rooms
  • Large temperature differences throughout the house
  • Rising energy bills
  • An HVAC system that runs frequently
  • Older or visibly deteriorated attic insulation

Sometimes the problem isn't simply:

“I need a bigger AC.”

The better question may be:

“Where is my conditioned air — and my money — going?” 💸

🔍 STOP GUESSING. LOOK AT THE WHOLE HOUSE.

Your HVAC equipment doesn't operate in a bubble.

Comfort is a team effort involving your:

HVAC System + Ductwork + Insulation + Airflow + Thermostat + Home Envelope

That's why Cooper Climate Control offers a:

🏡 HOME ENERGY ASSESSMENT

Instead of automatically pointing a finger at the AC unit, we can look at the bigger picture and help identify areas that may be affecting comfort and energy performance.

Because replacing equipment without addressing other major problems can be like buying brand-new shoes…

while ignoring the hole in the floor. 😆

ENERGY STAR similarly recommends evaluating ducts and major air leaks when considering HVAC improvements because those issues can sometimes be significant sources of comfort and efficiency problems.
