NATIONAL SPIRIT OF '45 DAY

National Spirit of '45 Day honors the can-do attitude of an entire generation affected by the trials and hardships of World War II. Observed every year on August 14, communities around the country hold events and memorials. Each one honors those who have inspired us, sacrificed, and preserved our nation for future generations.

The day ideally sets out to illustrate the people of the Greatest Generation. Over the years, iconic images have been imprinted on our minds. However, they only tell a part of the story. Still, thousands more remain to be told. Spirit of '45 Day urges us to explore the history. Listen to the stories. Get involved and help preserve the memories of those who lived it.

Around the world, servicemen and women stepped up to the task in the Pacific, Europe, the Mediterranean or Africa. At home, men and women provided valuable food, parts, and labor. Everyone did their part. The youngest of them managed farm work and took on duties on the homefront. Often, supplies of certain items were low - rubber for tires or leather for shoes for example. And gas, too. Rationing was not uncommon.

The generation innovated. They sacrificed. And roles shifted. While they did, technology advanced, too. As a result, manufacturing faced a new horizon.

Those motivated to do their duty often did so a personal cost. While migrating great distances, sometimes the only means of communication was the post office. Journalists filled in the blanks via radio and newspaper. Their words filled the airwaves or emptied bottles of ink onto pages with their stories. And the nation paid attention.

PLAY IN THE SAND DAY

Today is August 11 on the National Day Calendar and we are celebrating Play in the Sand Day to remind people to get outside, enjoy the sunshine, and create some fun in the sand.

New Orleans is one of the worst heat islands. Local groups want the city to protect the tree canopy.

As New Orleanians deal with hotter summers and more frequent heat waves, they are also experiencing minimal tree coverage to soften the brutal temperatures.

A coalition of environmental groups want the city to do a better job at protecting trees – and help the people who live and work near them. Save Trees with Ordinance Protection (STOP), a coalition of local groups, is raising alarm about tree damage and pushing for an updated “unified tree policy” to safeguard against more tree harm.

“This tree canopy issue really is an environmental justice issue across all neighborhoods and communities in the city,” Todd Reynolds, the executive director of Groundwork New Orleans, said at a press conference on Tuesday.

After Hurricane Katrina, the city lost more than 200,000 trees, according to local nonprofit Sustaining Our Urban Landscape (SOUL). And from 2001 to 2021, Orleans Parish lost around 4,000 acres of tree canopy – a 28 percent decrease.

A 2021 study showed New Orleans had the country’s worst “heat island” effect, where high concentrations of infrastructure and low concentrations of greenery insulate the city and magnify temperatures. The rough temperatures are exacerbated by the low tree canopy.

Trees only cover 18.5 percent of the city, compared to 47 percent in Atlanta, 38 percent in Austin and 37 percent in Memphis, according to SOUL. These stats also vary by neighborhood in the city. Iberville and the Florida Development have some of the lowest tree canopy figures in the city – below one percent – while City Park and Lakeshore have some of the highest, at around 30 percent.

The STOP coalition is urging stakeholders – including the Department of Parks and Parkways, Entergy and various advocacy organizations – to draft a revised approach to tree protection, which they note hasn’t been updated since the 1950s.

But they say that the Department of Parks and Parkways, the agency responsible for protecting the city’s trees, has delayed moving forward with a new policy.

Earlier this year, members of Tree Canopy NOLA met with New Orleans City Councilmember Lesli Harris about implementing a “unified tree policy,” which would draw on recommendations from a 2020 report by SOUL, the coalition said. Various agencies would coordinate to “ensure the urban forest is managed and expanded as a valuable piece of urban infrastructure,” according to the 2020 report.

In March, David Marcello, the executive director of Tulane’s Public Law Center and the convener of the organization Tree Canopy NOLA (TCNOLA), submitted a draft of the policy for consideration at a May council committee meeting. The Department of Parks and Parkways announced they would draft their own version of the ordinance, Marcello said. But since then, the city department has asked for multiple extensions, according to STOP members. The policy draft is now scheduled for consideration at a hearing in October.

“It’s hard to have a meeting of the minds if you don’t have a meeting,” Marcello said.

A representative from Parks and Parkways said the department received TCNOLA's draft ordinance in March.

"The department reviewed TCNOLA’s draft and incorporated appropriate concepts into a tree protection ordinance that the department was already developing," a Parks and Parkways representative said in a statement. "The department’s arborists, landscape architects, and industry experts are excited to present the updated draft ordinance to the council and the public in October.”

Harris declined to comment.

While public agencies like Parks and Parkways and nonprofits like the NOLA Tree Project have planted trees throughout the city, STOP coalition members argue that the city’s current treatment of some trees are thwarting those efforts.

“Many people are working hard to restore our shrinking tree canopy by planting new trees. Meanwhile, we are allowing our magnificent ancient trees to be treated as expendable,” Scott Howard, the founder of Parks for All, said. “This makes no sense.”

Following the press conference, STOP organizers travelled to the corner of St. Roch Avenue and Lombard Street in Gentilly Terrace, where a road replacement project has shredded the roots of live oaks, risking damage to the iconic, century-old trees.

Joseph Evans, who lives in the neighborhood, is a licensed arborist and a consultant for a landscape architecture firm – so he said he was sure that the large excavator cutting the roots was not complying with the city’s live oak protection rules. According to a 2019 study, around 1 out of 5 trees on public parks or public streets are live oaks. Despite protections, the city has lost at least a dozen of these trees in the past year, and at least six more were cut down by a private contractor.

Evans quickly alerted the city, and he and his neighbors have since been documenting various damage to the tree roots – by fencing, stump grinders and other construction equipment. Karam has previously indicated that the project didn’t comply with city rules, but that the city has taken action to prevent additional damage. On Tuesday, the exposed, shredded roots remained visible.

“I believe New Orleans is a tree museum and we’re not treating it like that,” Evans said.

What does "nonplussed" mean?

Confident and self-assured

Excited and enthusiastic

Angry and frustrated

Confused and surprised

nonplussed pronunciation: nänˈpləst

Definition: (adjective) surprised and confused, unsure of how to react or respond

Origin: from the Latin non plus, meaning "no more," used in English from the early 17th century to mean "at a loss" or "stuck in perplexity."

Example: The politician was nonplussed by the reporter's question and stumbled over his words in response.

Confused and surprised are two emotions that often go hand in hand. When someone is nonplussed, they are experiencing both of these feelings simultaneously. Confusion arises from a lack of understanding or an unexpected situation, while surprise is the result of something unexpected or shocking happening. Being nonplussed is a state of being caught off guard, unsure of how to react or respond. It can happen in any situation, from a difficult exam question to a sudden breakup. The word nonplussed perfectly captures the feeling of being caught in the moment, unsure of what to do next.

NATIONAL RASPBERRY BOMBE DAY

National Raspberry Bombe Day on August 11 recognizes this tantalizing frozen dessert. A raspberry bombe creates a beautiful finale to any summer meal. The dessert will be the centerpiece of your meal and tastes delicious, too!

Throughout August, raspberries are ripening. That's why this is the third raspberry holiday in the month. Who doesn't love the sweet, juicy berry? And they're even better frozen into a delicious dessert.

A typical bombe contains sherbet, heavy cream, sugar, chopped nuts, candied fruit and a dash of rum. The dessert is layered using a spherical mold and frozen overnight. With raspberries as the main ingredient, the result creates a terrific centerpiece.

Since one raspberry bush can yield several hundred berries per year, make more than one raspberry bombe. That way you can celebrate two days in a row or share with a friend. While the raspberry bombe is already an eye-catching dessert, add some rose petals to the finished product. Why? They will be a conversation starter. Then you can tell your guests that the raspberries are in the genus Rubus of the rose family.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 5

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”

The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.

Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

See it every Saturday at 10am & Sundays at 11:30am.

Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area? Contact your local public television station for air dates. For a limited time, see new episodes with WYES Passport.

We're happy to bring a piece of the past back to WYES . GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS, the vintage TV series that began WYES’ legacy of award-winning nationally broadcast cooking shows, returns to the station – 40 years after its debut. Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.

Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us. It begins Saturday in the kitchen of the legendary Chef Warren Leruth, and you'll see many other local icons below in the weeks to come. For all the episodes, the distinctive voices of Mary Lou Conroy and Andres Calandria narrate, with original music from the Charlie Byrd Trio, the Dukes of Dixieland and Banu Gibson. By Jeff Nowak, WWL Radio Sports

Another big piece of the Saints 2024 schedule has officially been finalized, with dates and times established for each of the Saints' three preseason games.

The team will have its first two preseason games out west due to their training camp being held in Irvine, California.

- P2, Aug. 18: Saints at San Francisco 49ers, 7 p.m. (FOX)

- P3, Aug. 25: Tennessee Titans at Saints, 1 p.m. (FOX/Gray TV)

The Saints preseason opponents were announced with the rest of the 2024 schedule earlier in May, but exact dates and times for two of the matchups were left TBD. As is typical with the preseason, start times and days are all over the map. The Saints will kick off their preseason slate with a Saturday night game, and also start an hour later than a typical Sunday kick in the finale, hosted at the Caesars Superdome.

Saints land 2 cold weather games in 2024. Cam Jordan is NOT a fan.

The Saints also add another nationally televised game to their 2024 slate, with the Aug. 18 showdown against the 49ers being beamed to a national audience.

The New Orleans Saints will host two open training camp practices for fans once they return from California later this summer.

The Saints announced Monday that the two sessions will take place Aug. 20 and Aug. 23 at Yulman Stadium at Tulane University and at Caesars Superdome, respectively. The times of the practices and fan information will be revealed later.

The announcement came as part of the Saints’ unveiling of their training camp schedule. With the Saints holding camp at the University of California, the Saints will leave for Irvine on Monday, July 22 and stay out west until Aug. 19.

When in Irvine, the Saints will hold two days joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16 in leadup to their Aug. 18 preseason showdown at San Francisco.

2024 Full Moon schedule

(all times Eastern)

  • Aug. 19 — 2:26 p.m. — Sturgeon Moon
  • Sept. 17 — 10:34 p.m. — Corn Moon
  • Oct. 17 — 7:26 a.m. — Hunter’s Moon
  • Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
  • Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. Cold Moon

Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.

Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.

Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.

Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.

Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.

In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.

Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.

Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.

Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

I’m having a great time with my summer concert series at the Deutches Haus, on the first Tuesday and the third Wednesday of July and August. New Orleans: The New Orleans Jazz Museum is more than a building; it is a living embodiment of New Orleans Jazz culture and music in New Orleans. This is due to the vision of one person: Greg Lambousy, Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum.

Through Greg Lambousy and his staff’s efforts, the New Orleans Jazz Museum has become the epicenter of the New Orleans Jazz scene. From festivals like the Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival, Satchmo Summerfest, Jazz on the Balcony, Weekly free Jazz performances, and the most significant exhibits relative to New Orleans and early Jazz history presented in the correct cultural context, the City of New Orleans.

To paraphrase the great Professor Longhair, “When you come to New Orleans, be sure to go see the New Orleans Jazz Museum.”.

Presentation, 7:30 PM, August 23 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St, NOLA. Free Admission RSVP preferred to: festguide@gmail

Greg Lambousy is the Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Before accepting this position, Lambousy was Director of Curatorial Services for the National World War II Museum. He began his career at the New Orleans Museum of Art and later moved to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). During his twenty-year tenure at the LSM, Lambousy managed the institution’s collections of more than 500,000 artifacts and other historical items, directed improvements to collections storage at the New Orleans Mint, developed conservation and digitization projects across collections and within the Louisiana Historical Center archives, conducted oral histories and guided the selection and accession of materials related to the State’s history. Since 2016, as Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Lambousy has led the expansion of the Museum in programming, education, exhibitions, international relations, and the development of the Gallatin Street Records label. Visitation has increased fourfold since 2016, and revenues from grants, sponsorships, and events have funded operations, while capital programs have advanced the development of the Museum’s Performance Center and Herb Alpert Education Wing, among other aspects of the Museum’s campus

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!
