Join us in protecting union millwright jobs: Do your research and make a plan to vote
|
Union workers are the backbone of America. Let’s show our power by getting informed and being ready to go on Election Day – or by returning mail-in ballots early.
The U.S. Postal Service advises mailing your ballot at least a week before your state’s due date, if not earlier. States have different laws regarding in-person early voting. Check out your state's rules, including the deadline for early in-person voting, here. If you plan to vote in person, make room in your schedule now.
Bipartisan Endorsements
The SSMRC and our parent organization, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, are proud to support candidates from either party who support good union jobs.

Let your voice be heard by voting for candidates who support labor issues
|
When you complete your ballot, consider issues that impact your job, your wages, and your benefits. Decisions politicians make every day affect these things. We can protect prevailing wages, apprenticeship standards, and more by keeping labor issues in mind when we vote.
The SSMRC's political director, Rick Halford, is busy talking with state and local candidates, and our council is supporting and endorsing candidates who fight for union millwright values.
Some of the labor issues we discuss with candidates include right-to-work laws, health and welfare benefits, unemployment-insurance programs, prevailing wages, workers’ compensation, workplace safety, tax fraud in relation to construction projects, and apprenticeship standards.
Here is a list of candidates the SSMRC is endorsing because of their pro-labor policies:

Council forming state committees to fight for union values and more work for members
|
|
The SSMRC has embarked on a journey to build a non-partisan, civic-action arm that will benefit members through increased work opportunities and state- and local-level attention to vital labor issues such as prevailing wages and workers’ compensation.
Just as large corporations have political pull, unions seek to provide similar influence for working people. Our council’s committees work to form political partnerships that will help pass labor-friendly laws and give council representatives access to the table to discuss how our members could be assets to major projects.
We currently have committees covering the states of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Florida, and Texas. We need Texas members' help to fully launch that committee, which was established in January. Click here to give your support (It's free and takes only a few minutes).

Tax fraud: Let's stop it and protect our work!
|
|
Our fight to end tax fraud from cheating contractors continues. And the UBC is leading the charge on fighting tax fraud all over the country. Take a look at this comprehensive report the UBC released recently.
What is Tax Fraud?
Tax fraud is a terrible epidemic in the construction industry. A growing number of construction contractors are cheats. They pay their employees off the books or wrongly classify them as independent contractors so they won't have to pay employment taxes nor workers' compensation insurance. Many use labor brokers to get away with it. Here's one example.
This not only steals work from union members, but it harms the local tax base because of lost tax revenue. Go to StopTaxFraud.net and learn about this issue and ways you can get involved. This isn't something that's happening to "the other guy." It is happening to you, and you may not even know it. We will fight for you, but we will fight even stronger if you join us.
