We Bid Farewell to Adam (Wham) Strasberg
Our Summer Camp Director for 19 years.
Our deep gratitude is extended to Adam (Wham) for almost two decades of passionate dedication to Camp Kawartha.
Adam started out as our Leader in Training Director and soon moved into the role of Summer Camp Director in 2005. Since then, Adam helped to build the reputation of Camp Kawartha by hiring exemplary staff, creating a culture of adventure and caring, at the same time ensuring that each camper was valued, celebrated, and encouraged to strive.
Here are just a few of his accomplishments: He expanded our Day Camp, helped to create - a Counselor Skills Development Program, Pre-Leadership Camp, Challenge and Adventure, Kinder Camp, Wilderness CSD and LIT, Twilight Camp and CK101 for first time campers. Adam enhanced both our Leader’s in Training Program, our Day Camp and improved our Tripping Program.
He has positively impacted thousands of campers and hundreds of staff. Adam is known for his energy, vision, and determination. Families appreciated his ability to reach out, to reassure, and to deal with a wide variety of Camper needs. Staff appreciated his capacity to inspire, to facilitate the development of leadership skills, and they admired his warmth, while encouraging each staff member to improve and grow.
His is a legacy that will endure for decades. Adam has set the bar high for our next Summer Camp Director.
From all of us -- Thank you, Adam!

A Moving Story You Need To Read...
The following is a letter we received from a parent who was assisted with funding from our Sponsorship and Subsidy Fund. With its poignant and sincere message, we knew we had to share it with you.
I am a single parent of 3 kids. I work full time and raise them on my own. I am the sole financial provider for the children. I work very hard to make sure I meet their needs and provide them with as much opportunity as possible. However, as we all know with high costs of living it’s not always easy to do things. Often in life money provides opportunity and plays a factor on life experience. Due to this it is humbling to admit that I cannot always give my kids every experience I want them to have.
Thanks to the generosity of the donors of the Sponsorship and Subsidy Fund for camp my children were able to go away to the two-week program this past summer of 2021. I was speechless at the approval and so excited for my kids. My two sons ‘Michael’ and ‘Andrew’ benefited from this experience. I am more then grateful that there are people out there that are unbelievably selfless in helping this program happen. Continue Reading Janet's Letter.
The Sponsorship and Subsidy Fund was established to support those families who cannot afford our fees but, want their child or children to have a camp experience whether it is for Summer Camp or for our Outdoor Education Program.
This letter is a reminder that we should always consider helping one another -- whether it is a visit to an isolated older neighbour, a bag of groceries given to the local food bank, or a donation that allows a camper to experience the joys of being included in a magical camp experience.

ROTARIANS TO SEE SUMMER CAMP
The Camp for Boys at Clear Lake to be Formally Inspected Thursday [June 15, 1922]
The committee in charge of the Boys' Camp recently erected by the Rotarians at Clear Lake, have arranged that it will be formally opened on Thursday afternoon, when a monster picnic will be held by the Rotarians and their friends. Every Rotarian is asked to invite as many ladies and gentlemen as he wishes, so long as they are transported by auto to South Beach, where they will be met at three o’clock on Thursday afternoon of this week by steamer and carried across the lake to the camp. The only charge being 25 cents for the boat trip, returning by boat to the Beach, and motoring home, thus having a fine motor trip, a nice short boat sail, a real picnic, and inspection of the wonderful Rotary Camp for Boys.
Early access to the Camp was a bit challenging! Camp Line came much later, and Birchview Road even later!
The date on this article helps us explain that the property for the Camp was purchased in 1921, however, the first campers came in 1922! We celebrated 100 years this year but, we think we should celebrate some more in 2022!
Watch for our special events -- and hey…maybe we should consider bringing back that ‘monster picnic’ – sounds fun!!

Art Show & Sale - A Great Fundraiser!
We hosted our first ever Art Show & Sale at the Environment Centre on Sunday, November 21st and what an amazing day!
Artists David Goyette, Corin Forrester, David Hickey, Carol and Ralph Ingleton, Sheila MacLeod Potter and Stephanie Forrester banded together to put their fine art on display and guests were impressed! Everything from hand-painted Christmas cards, to sculpted metal birds, to pen and ink drawings on birchbark were all scooped up by those looking for Christmas gifts or something for themselves!
The artists generously donated half of the proceeds from any sales to support the programming of the Centre! Almost $2,100.00 was raised!
The success of this 4-hour event has led us to think that we should do it again and make it bigger and better! If you would like to become involved in organizing our next fine-art event, please reach out to Susan – sramey@campkawartha.ca – to register as a volunteer!
We thank all the artists for their generosity and taking the time out of their busy schedules to support us. And we thank all who attended and those who made purchases. You helped make the event successful at so many levels!

Nature Showcase: The Christmas Tree
For millennia, humans have used evergreens and imbued them with special meaning. In ancient times some cultures thought evergreens helped to banish ghosts and illness. In the Middle Ages evergreen boughs were arranged in homes for fragrance and to add colour in the dark months of winter. Germany is given credit for starting the Christmas tree tradition that we know today. Originally, associated with the Christian tradition, today Christmas trees are less associated with Christianity and are more the centrepiece of gift giving and family gatherings. But that early concept of bringing greenery into the home persists.
Everyone has a preferred type of tree – Scotch Pine, Balsam Fir, Douglas Fir, White Spruce and White Pine – these are all popular. The ‘Scotch’ Pine or ‘Scots’ Pine and the Balsam Fir tend to be the most popular in Canada. Continue Reading.
