SERIES OF TEST OPENINGS SCHEDULED FOR GEORGE P. COLEMAN MEMORIAL BRIDGE NEXT WEEK

Traffic queues will be cleared between each test opening.

YORK COUNTY / GLOUCESTER COUNTY— Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) bridge crews are scheduled to perform a series of test openings on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge (Route 17) next week, each lasting approximately 30 minutes or less, related to a maintenance work project on the bridge’s balance wheel.

A series of openings are scheduled overnight Tuesday, April 23, between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., with an additional series of daytime test openings scheduled for April 25-26, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. After each opening, crews will reopen the travel lanes on the bridge to allow any traffic queues to clear between openings.

The Coleman Bridge is a double-swing span structure over the York River that connects Gloucester Point and Yorktown. The test openings are necessary for balance testing associated with an ongoing bridge maintenance project.

VDOT attempts to schedule maintenance and non-emergency repair work during travel periods when traffic volumes are lower to reduce impacts on motorists. All work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change. Backup dates for the overnight test openings are scheduled for April 24-25.

Before hitting the road, consider using VDOT's free 511 Virginia traffic tools, or the free 511-integrated Waze GPS app, to check for the most up-to-date road and travel conditions. VDOT's 511Virginia.org website and 511 mobile app offer information about construction, traffic, incidents, and congestion, as well as access to traffic cameras, weather-related impacts and more.
