Sturgeon Survey on the Couderay
As I peered into the deep pool below the bridge through my polarized sunglasses, the four-foot-long, dark gray torpedo slid smoothly above the pale, sandy bottom—and vanished.

This hole on the Couderay River near Radisson, WI, is a favorite hangout for lake sturgeon. Max Wolter, Fisheries Biologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), knows this because his crew had caught them here before. Still, knowing a fish is there, and catching it, are two very different things.

Becoming an Artist
On a slow Thursday afternoon, Digger the hognose snake explored the desk as I worked at my computer. She slid smoothly around the monitor, behind the phone, and up over a shelf that stores folders and an iPad. I gingerly redirected her head before she got too far away, but she had given me an idea.

I opened the iPad, downloaded a free painting app, and set it on the desk. With a little encouragement, Digger was soon gliding across the screen and leaving a trail of green "paint." She even hit the right button to change the paint color to purple. After a minute or so, Digger had completed her first masterpiece. We hope this is just the beginning of her artistic career!

Insect, Animal, Art
I find myself seeing insects in a different light lately. Sure, the sun's rays might now cast longer shadows off the tattered wing of a butterfly, and the sight of a bumble bee hovering over late-blooming goldenrod is becoming more and more infrequent as we lose hours of daylight. But that's not what I mean by a different light. After recently taking part in an art class where I used a microscope to gain a closer view of butterfly wings, I can appreciate their beauty from another perspective. A scale, proboscis, the hairs on a leg--all necessary parts for these insects had once been inherently glanced over when inventorying a pinned beetle, wasp, or moth specimen. Now my eyes are opening up to the beauty of insects--and in more ways than one.
