What’s Moving the Market This Week

Government of B.C. Legislative Changes to Development Fees

The B.C. government has given developers more flexibility in how they finance new developments. At the municipal level, Metro Vancouver voted to reduce development charges and remove the planned 2027 increase.

Earlier this year, Supply-Build Canada submitted a letter calling for more sustainable development charges in B.C. More work remains. We'll continue pushing for development charges that keep homebuilding moving without leaving municipalities short on the revenue they need to build the roads, water, sewer, and hydro systems that new developments require.

Read our letter here and the B.C. government's response here.

Section 301 Tariffs: Forced Labour Update

The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has found that Canada has not effectively enforced its forced labour laws on imported goods and is proposing a 10% tariff as a result. A final decision won't come until consultations and public hearings wrap up in July.

In response, the Canadian government has signalled it will introduce legislation to strengthen its forced labour framework in the coming weeks.

This is likely a trade negotiation tactic, but businesses should expect more active enforcement by the Canada Border Services Agency on forced labour compliance for imported goods.

Manitoba Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Breakfast Premier’s Address with Premier Kniew

Supply-Build Canada attended the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Breakfast Premier’s Address with Premier Wab Kinew where he addressed business leaders, organizations, and government officials on the province’s economic priorities.

During the address a significant focus was placed on youth employment, including the announcement of NextMB Jobs for Youth, a $3.5 million wage subsidy program for 300 paid placements, and an $800,000 Dreambuilders Initiative to support trades training in northern Manitoba. On infrastructure, he highlighted the $3 billion Brandon Generating Station expansion to strengthen energy grid reliability, and major upgrades to the Hudson Bay Railway and Port of Churchill which will promote trade and development.

A task force of Canadian forestry industry leaders has released a report outlining barriers facing the sector and recommendations for federal and provincial governments. Key findings point to domestic issues: lack of cost-competitive fibre, underinvestment, and not enough wood use in construction.

As a building materials association, Supply-Build Canada supports the report's findings and will raise them in upcoming government meetings. Stay tuned for our analysis.

Building a successful manufacturing company rarely follows a straight line.

Jesse Watson and Ryan Cullen join Liz Kovach to unpack the real story behind Quik-Therm, one of Canada's most adaptable manufacturers. Code changes, product pivots, market shifts. They navigated all of it and kept building.

In this episode:

  • How they spotted a gap and built a business around it
  • What forced them to scrap their product strategy and start over
  • Why innovation means nothing if nobody adopts it
  • How education and building science became their competitive edge
  • Lessons on hiring, leadership, and knowing when to grow

If you're building something, leading a team, or just trying to figure out how to keep moving when the plan stops working, this conversation is worth an hour of your time.

Margins in this industry are razor-thin. Three pennies on the dollar thin. But most employees have no idea, and that disconnect shows up every day in how they work.

Three Pennies of Profit is a short course that changes that. It gives your team a real picture of where the money goes and why every sale, every decision, and every interaction with a customer actually matters.

Available to Supply-Build Canada members as part of your membership.

Don't wait until the margin is gone to start paying attention.
