Wetutoskimetowin eNEWSLETTER

On October 8 at the Agowiidiwinan Centre, the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba and Manitoba Education launched the new grade 12 social studies course option ‘Land and Treaties: Relationships and Responsibilities’.

The launch included words from Elder Florence Paynter; Treaty Commissioner Loretta Ross; Treaty Education Manager, Amanda Simard; Mona Pandey, Deputy Minister of Education and Early Childhood Learning; Jackie Connell, Assistant Deputy minister of Indigenous Excellence in Education; and Gail Flett, Treaty Coordinator at the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.

The course began as an SIC in 2018 and was offered in several school divisions across the province. As an official course option, Grade 12 'Land and Treaties' no longer requires SIC registration. Featured Teaching Resource

This month's featured teaching resource uses Treaty medals to explore circles, radius, diameter, and perimeter. It is an example of latent learning. Latent learning refers to acquiring knowledge without immediately demonstrating the learned behavior, but it becomes evident when a relevant situation arises. Students gain knowledge and understanding that they can pull apply in other subject areas or in life.

Treaty Sleuthing: Spaces + Places

In 1738 a Treaty of Peace, Friendship, and Trade was made between the French and the Western Dakotas at Fort la Reine. The original French fort (not to be confused with the nearby modern-day Fort la Reine Museum), built by Pierre Gaultier de La Vérendrye in October 1738, was located on the Assiniboine River between today’s Portage la Prairie and Dakota Tipi First Nation.

We have a course code!!

In 2018-2019, Treaty Education offered Manitoba schools a local-themed Treaty course for SIC registry. Since that time, over 250 Manitoba grade 12 students have attained credit in 'Grade 12: Treaties and the Treaty Relationship".

Manitoba Education has reworked the course and it is now an official social studies option entitled 'Land and Treaties: Relationships & Responsibilities'. The course code for credit registry is 0398.
