A note from the co-presidents
Spring is a season of growth--and at SCAHD, we're blooming with fresh opportunities for connection, learning, and inspiration. As we look ahead, we remain committed to delivering value to your membership through timely webinars, impactful in-person events, and a strong peer network.
Our calendar is filled with engaging in-person opportunities. In June, join us for Art and Healing at Cedars-Sinai--a unique event exploring how art enhances wellness, complete with a guided tour of their renowned collection acquired thanks to philanthropy. Later that month, our 2nd Annual Philanthropy Symposium at Sharp HealthCare will convene thought leaders to discuss the evolving role of philanthropy and system integration in healthcare.
We're excited to share that SCAHD is expanding its vision beyond Southern California to grow our network throughout the West Coast. As SCAHD continues to grow, we invite you to grow with us. If you live or work in Arizona, Nevada, Northern California, Oregon, or Washington, consider joining a committee to help expand our reach--and enjoy a special discounted membership rate. More details on our strategic direction will be unveiled at our Annual Meeting in October--you won't want to miss it!
Likewise we are delighted to announce that Mental Health America of Los Angeles (MHALA) has joined us as our newest institutional member. Their work highlights the crucial link between healthcare philanthropy and community mental health, demonstrating the strength of collaboration within our sector.
We also want to express our gratitude to our sponsors and to each of you who bring energy and heart to our community. Interested in sponsoring an upcoming event or initiative? Let's connect!
We look forward to seeing you--virtually or in person--throughout the year.
Warm regards,
Liz Birlet & Yuri E. Casco, CFRE

SCAHD Education and Networking
| | Mental Health America of Los Angeles (MHALA) | | |
As our newest institutional member, Mental Health America of Los Angeles (MHALA) team members attended their first SCAHD event on February 28 at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. With a mission to ensure that people with mental health needs achieve meaningful, healthy lives in their communities, MHALA Chief Development Officer Deanna Campbell sees that incorporating the health care aspect in the organization’s programs is an integral part of their future. “Sometimes people can think of mental health as a luxury, since it’s not always the priority when they first need to tend to other basic needs. Our goal is to meet members where they are and bring as many services as possible into one physical space—making support accessible, integrated, and delivered in a way that feels safe and familiar.”
Deanna attended the event with her two MHALA colleagues, Director of Donor Relations Ana Martinez and Development Manager Hannah Frank. “The event reinforced the importance of relationship building in our work and raised some challenging conversations taking place in our communities,” shared Deanna, whose career path has included work in case management, education, and mental health. Inspired by her daughter’s personal health experience to work for an organization that provides critical wraparound services like MHALA, Hannah had a chance to ask the event’s featured speaker (Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Maria Salinas) a follow-up question after the program. “I asked her about overcoming rejection, and she encouraged me to see that it’s not personal to you or the organization, and that accomplishing the mission is the grit.”
Ana first learned about SCAHD from one of the organization’s board members, Josué Hernandez, and was delighted to connect with and learn from fundraising professionals from health care organizations at the event. “We are a small team, so we want to strategically divide and conquer,” said Ana, whose post-college internship with a wraparound organization in San Bernardino led to her career pathway. “I fell in love and tapped into a talent I didn’t know I had. I have seen how this work can make a difference.”
The MHALA team is excited to have joined the organization—Ana registered for the recently presented SCAHD webinar on capital campaign preparedness and looks forward to “continued learning and support from my peers.” Hannah is also happy to benefit from the expertise of SCAHD’s collective membership, referring to the benefits that can come from such a “hive mind.” “Networking is a critical part of all of our jobs,” shared Hannah. “I want to surround myself with people who know how to do this work, because one person can’t always have the answers to everything.”
Deanna is grateful for the warm welcome their team received and the support SCAHD will bring in the future. “Development can be challenging work, and we all really care about what we do. There is so much need, and it’s great to see professionals coming together to help one another.”
