Shiva Baby with the NJFF

Be sure to watch the new comedy, Shiva Baby, now streaming at Belcourt.org ($8 members, $10 non-members) so you can join the NJFF at the Belcourt’s Living Room Film Club on Tuesday, April 27th at 8:00 pm for a lively talkback.

The film tells the story of Danielle, a young woman who attends a post-funeral service to find her ex-girlfriend, an older lover, and her pushy parents all there at the same time!

Vanderbilt Professor Rebecca J. Epstein-Levi will lead the discussion on the topic of today's sexual mores and the Jewish tradition.

Leslie K. Barry on "Newark Minutemen" Virtual Author Talk
Thursday, April 29, 2021
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
In partnership with Pozez JCC and JCC of Northern New Jersey

Moderated by Riselle Bain, known for her part as young Miriam in The 10 Commandments with Charleston Heston will be interviewing Leslie Barry. Riselle is the daughter of Abie Bain, another former Newark Minuteman. Today she is a cantor in Florida.

Based on a true story of forbidden love and unholy heroism, Newark Minutemen is set against the backdrop of an America ripped apart by the Great Depression and on the brink of war. It’s 1938 in Newark, N.J., and a shadow Hitler-Nazi party called the German-American Bund led by an American “Fuhrer” threatens to swallow democracy. In this dangerous time of star-spangled fascism, a romance forms between a Jewish boxer, Yael and the daughter of the enemy, Krista. Soon after, Yael is recruited by the mob and FBI to help bring down the Bund. Author Leslie K. Barry’s heartbreaking novel – soon to be a major motion picture -- captures an authentic portrait of a lost America searching for identity and fighting for freedom.
