HI-Lights

This Sunday, November 16, is overflowing with good things at HIEC! Begin the morning with a warm breakfast provided by EfM and the Wisdom Circle, then browse the Holiday Market from 8:30 AM to noon in Inglett Hall and Bishop Commons. Parish and local artists will be selling original art, books, baked goods, and unique gifts, perfect for teachers, holiday hosts, family, and friends.

After the 10:15 AM service, we’ll gather to celebrate Caroline Fleming’s 15 years and Melody McNeil’s 20 years of extraordinary service to our community—no goodbyes, just gratitude (and cake).

Stick around to help pack more than 120 lunches for Church of the Common Ground in Parish Hall before worship at 1:00 PM in Woodruff Park.

And to round out the day, our Youth Group is hosting an outdoor movie night from 5:30–8:00 PM featuring the classic film Hook, complete with a food truck, yard games, and space to relax under the stars.

It’s a full, joyful Sunday of fellowship, service, and celebration—we hope you’ll join us for it all!

Season of Gratitude

Wow—what a response!

We are filled with gratitude for 177 pledges totaling $1,230,000 so far. You have responded so much more quickly than last year—thank you!

We know these are uncertain times financially, but a pledge is simply a statement of faith and intention, not a binding contract. Life happens, and we understand. Together we strive to give out of gratitude for what God has given us. Every gift, large or small, helps us build this community of love and hope.

The Gift of a Forced Pause

Megan Atkinson, Dir. of Youth, Young Adults, and Family Ministries

Last week, life forced me to slow down in a way I hadn’t planned. I ended up in the hospital with a racing heartbeat, unable to go on the Dollywood trip with the youth group I had been planning for months.

Ever since having Liam, I thought my busyness and constant motion were just part of life as a new mom. But God used this unexpected pause to remind me: even moms need to stop, slow down, and rest.

As we near the Advent season, we can look at Mary and Joseph as two people who knew something about waiting and slowing down. They faced uncertainty, fear, and unknowns, yet they trusted God’s timing and allowed Him to guide each step. Like them, I had to learn that slowing down isn’t a failure, it’s an invitation to lean on God, to listen, and to trust.

Advent is a season of holy waiting, of learning to be still and prepare our hearts for what’s to come. It’s not about rushing to get everything perfect or doing all the things. It’s about noticing where God is already at work, even when life looks nothing like we expected.

Even when life stops us abruptly, through sickness, setbacks, or detours, God is still at work. Sometimes a racing heartbeat or an unexpected hospital stay is His way of reminding us to slow down, breathe, and trust that He holds everything in His hands. When we finally do slow down, we may find that He’s been there all along, quietly waiting for us to rest in Him.

Changes and Chances

A Grief Workshop

A workshop for all kinds of grief.

We are Practicing the Pastoral Arts. We are not about becoming artists, or even creating a “work of art”. Instead, we are being brave enough to let the art do its work with us. Join us on Wednesdays, November 12 & 19, at 10:30-12:00 PM or Thursdays, November 13 & 20, at 6:00-7:30 PM.

Art is powerful, freeing, and healing. It is evocative. Pastoral Art is a mindful mixed media approach to making something with our spiritual lives. We experiment with art supplies because it gives us access to the uncharted, untapped riches of the soul and the possibility for deep healing. We don’t have to be “creative” or “artistic” to engage in Pastoral Arts. We simply look, and listen, and oftentimes we wait; and I dare say, we play.

With this grief workshop, showing up is the hard part, but it is enough.

CAC & Solidarity Christmas Outreach

Christmas gift-giving is one of the season’s most meaningful traditions, rooted in our faith and the joy of sharing with others. This year, we’re once again partnering with Solidarity and the Community Assistance Center (CAC) through their Adopt-a-Family programs—bringing the magic of Christmas morning to more than 150 children in need right here in our community.

Beginning Sunday, November 9, visit Bishop Commons to browse children’s wish lists and “adopt” a child or family. Simply select a list that speaks to you, shop for the requested gifts, and return your unwrapped items to the church by Sunday, December 1. We’ll make sure your gifts are delivered in time for Christmas through CAC or Solidarity. Gift guidelines and additional details will be provided with the wish lists.

Let’s come together to make Christmas morning merry and bright for our neighbors and their children! For more information, contact Jan Paul at Janpaul1005@gmail.com or Charles Crosby at Charles@corepm.net

Christmas Flowers & Music

Help us prepare a beautiful and festive celebration for Christmas! We invite you to make a donation to support the Christmas decorations, flowers, and the string ensemble for Christmas Eve worship.

You may dedicate your gift In Memory of or In Thanksgiving for a loved one. These dedications will be included in our Christmas Eve service bulletin as a meaningful way to honor or remember those who hold a special place in your heart.

To contribute, please use this online form or the envelopes in the pew. Please use the memo line to indicate how you would like your donation to read in the bulletin. Donations are needed by noon on December 15.

Thank you for your generosity in helping make our church beautiful and our music inspiring this Christmas season! For more information, please contact Renee Stephens.
