WOLVERINE WEEK IN REVIEW

Sept. 14th to 19th, 2026

Dance Team

The dance team had their first performances at this Friday's first home game of the season! We had so much fun participating in our pregame walk down tradition with the band performing fight song and our first half time performance of the year to "Living on a Prayer". We are also continuing what we started last year and doing mini performances in the stands along with the band. Be on the lookout for halftime and through the entire game! We can't wait to start preparing for our next set of performances for homecoming!

Boys Varsity Golf

The Boys Golf team moved to 3-0 on the season, with a resounding 183-228 win over Cedarcrest.

Eric Kim took medalist honors with a scorching 33! It was a perfectly clean scorecard for Eric with 7 pars and 2 birdies. Gordy Rounds was right behind him shooting a 1-under par 34. Gordy rifled his drive on the first hole OB and made a double bogey but responded with 4(!) birdies over the final six holes. Edeun Park played his usual solid round with a 2-over 37, and Boden Freeborn played well shooting a 38. Wes Peters finished in the top 5, posting a 41.

The Wolverines will face off with the Sammamish RedHawks this Tuesday afternoon at Bellevue Golf Course.

Cheer 🏈 🍁

Friday Night Lights weather showed up in full force Friday night — clear skies, great temps, and an awesome atmosphere for our first home game of the season. Bellevue dominated with a 42–9 win, a strong start to what’s shaping up to be an exciting season.

Next week, Bellevue travels to Eastlake High School.

Boys Water Polo

The Wolverine Boys’ Water Polo team kicked off regular season play with a packed week of competition, traveling across the Puget Sound and facing four challenging opponents in five days.

The season opened on Monday against Bainbridge Island in Silverdale. After a ferry ride and a quick transition from boat to pool deck, the Wolverines battled toe-to-toe with Bainbridge in a tightly contested match. Bainbridge struck first, Bellevue answered immediately, and neither team was able to create much separation throughout regulation, which ended in a tie. The Wolverines headed into their first overtime of the season, playing two three-minute periods. Bainbridge managed to build a two-goal advantage, but Bellevue fought back and nearly evened the score before time expired. The comeback came up just one goal short, with Bainbridge earning a narrow 10-9 victory.

The next evening, Bellevue traveled to North Seattle to take on Shorewood. The Wolverines came out firing, scoring in the opening minute and building a commanding 9-1 lead by halftime. With the game well in hand, the coaching staff shifted to a broader rotation, giving valuable varsity experience to several newer players, including the team's freshman goalie. Shorewood closed the gap during the second half, but Bellevue maintained control and secured its first win of the season, 13-10.

Thursday brought the Wolverines' first home game of the year at Woodridge Pool against Kennedy Catholic, a familiar opponent after the teams played to a tie during the preseason jamboree. The regular season matchup proved just as competitive. The game featured momentum swings throughout and, for the second time in four days, Bellevue found itself heading into overtime. Unfortunately, the result was another one-goal heartbreak, with Kennedy Catholic escaping with an 8-7 victory.

The week concluded Saturday at Curtis Aquatic Center against cross-lake rival Roosevelt. Bellevue entered the match short-handed, missing a few key players due to injury and illness. The Wolverines started strong and grabbed an early lead, but Roosevelt gradually took control in the second quarter and maintained their advantage the rest of the way. Bellevue finished the week with a 4-10 loss and a 1-3 record in league play.

While the record may not fully reflect the effort, the opening week showed the Wolverines can compete with anyone. Two overtime losses and several strong individual performances demonstrated both the team's resilience and its potential. As every water polo fan knows, a few more exclusions drawn, a couple more bar-downs, and a different week can tell a very different story.

Looking ahead, Bellevue will face Interlake/Sammamish (D2) in a non-league matchup on Monday at 6:20 p.m. at Edgebrook Swim & Tennis Club. The Wolverines then return home Thursday to host one of the state's top Division 1 programs, Gig Harbor, at Woodridge Pool at 4:20 p.m. Then we finish off the week with the Yeti Tournament against local club and high school teams over the weekend. The team hopes to bounce back from a week of close calls while welcoming several players back from injury and illness.

Varsity Football

The Bellevue Varsity football team hosted 1A powerhouse Lynden Christian on Friday night for their home opener.

For the third week in a row, the Wolverines found themselves in a fist fight, yet again against a well-coached, state-experienced football team. In the first quarter, Bellevue held a hard-fought 7-3 lead (Barnes TD), but immediately following the Lynden Christian field goal, sophomore Lonzell Hall took the kickoff 95 yards for a second Wolverine touchdown.

Another good defensive stop and offensive drive gave Bellevue a 21-3 lead going into half time, but the Lyncs [their spelling] of Lynden weren’t done yet: a nearly 7-minute drive to open the third quarter cut the Bellevue lead to 21-9. That was the wake-up call Bellevue needed, as they reeled off another 21 unanswered points (RJ Ward with two and Hall with another) to ice the game. 42-9, the final.

Next Friday the Wolverines will visit Eastlake for the next game.

Freshman Football

Another tough test for the Bellevue Freshmen this week against Puyallup. The final scoreboard didn’t go our way, but our guys kept battling and won the second half 8-6. That says something about the character this team is developing.

We’re getting better. We’re getting tougher. And we’re learning the habits and discipline it’s going to take to win football games when Kingco play kicks off September 30 against Eastlake.

Big performances this week from Dexter Hamlin, Jashon “Go To” Johnson, and Jude Hayhurst.

Now it’s time to get healthy, get some guys back, and go to work.

The Wolves are next.

Boys and Girls Cross Country

Cross country started the week Monday with some strong work on the track in the late summer sun, followed by time in the weight room. Tuesday was an easy distance run around campus followed by a tasty team dinner al fresco provided by our generous booster club in the south courtyard. Wednesday brought the team to Liberty High School for a 3-mile test run along with Newport High School. The team enjoyed clear sunny skies and a boost in confidence as several strong performances were demonstrated across the board. Thursday was a long easy distance run on the soft surfaces of the Mercer Slough trails, followed by weights. Friday was kept simple with an easy campus jog followed by some race-paced strides, with the focus on preparing for the annual Bellevue Cross Country Invitational at Lake Sammamish State Park on Saturday.

Frosh/Soph Open boys broke the morning calm beneath a stubborn marine layer by powering around the flat grassy course for - thanks to a wrong turn towards the end - what turned out to be 4200 meters of racing rather than the usual 5000. Several students remarked at how strong they felt towards the finish line... Sophomore Marcus D'Alessio claimed a top 10 finisher t-shirt, with several teammates very close behind. We will look forward to seeing what this group can do in the near future for a full 5k, as things look very promising.

The races continued at 5000 meters, with a new race every 45 minutes. Freshman Soriya Lim Tilton led 12 of her teammates in the girls open race, finishing 18th. Junior Austin Liu led the Jr/Sr boys open group; sophomore Railee Mohr led the girls JV Top 5 group, while senior Levi Nistler led a very tight boys JV Top 5 group; the skies began to clear as junior Grace Zhao led the girls Varsity 5-8s, while freshman Justin Zhang led a young, promising boys Varsity 5-8 group (all XC newcomers); sophomore Justis Truitt led the girls Varsity 1-4 runners, while senior Tage Wilson, a first-year XC runner himself, led the boys Varsity 1-4s. Many students set new personal bests in just our first honest effort at 5000 meters this season. All results attached (BHS only) as well as team standings for 5000 meters (and 4200m). Full results are available on Athletic.net.

The hope after this week is that eyes are opening and new ambitions have been sparked as we continue to build into our season. Next meet is Wednesday at St. Edward state park in Kenmore with Bothell and Woodinville.

Girls Volleyball— Weekly Update

Last week was a physically taxing week for Wolverine Volleyball. We played 3 matches in four days of which 2 were away.

On Monday we were at Issaquah High School. JV and JVC each battled to 2-1 losses with Varsity losing 3-0 to a talented

state contending team.  On Wednesday we were at home for our first conference match against Inglemoor High School.

JV and JVC played inspired volleyball, and both came away with 3-0 sweeps.  Varsity also showed some ever improving volleyball putting the team in a position to win, going up 2-1 and 23-22 in the 4th game. Inglemoor showed some grit late and hung on to win the 4th game and then the 5th game to take the match 3-2. The third match of the week was a quick turnaround on Thursday at Redmond High School. JVC came away with a road winning 2-1. JV lost theirs 0-3 and Varsity had a second consecutive heart-breaking loss dropping the contest 3-2. Needless to say, we’re in recovery mode this weekend.

Next, we have 2 conference matches with the first at Liberty HS on Monday and the second at home against Sammamish HS on Wednesday.

JV and JVC are at 5:15pm and Varsity is at 7:00pm for both matches. Hope to see you there!

Girls Varsity Soccer

BGS completed our nonconference season with a 2-0 victory over Holy Names Academy, goals by Ava-Tiani Jeremiah and Mackenzie tucker with assists from Lola Paget and Saleen Koszorus. In our Kingco season opener, we defeated North Creek high school 5-1, Saleen Koszorus scored a Hattrick with additional goals by Keira Gray and Mackenzie tucker, assists to Saleen Koszorus, Ava-Tiani Jeremiah, and Marlee Tucker.

Marching Band

The Bellevue Marching Band performed at our home football game of the season. The Halftime show celebrated the joy experienced as Seattle hosted some of the World Cup matches this summer. We want to thank the BHS parents who worked so hard to get our band fitted into uniforms and also thank the Wolverine crowd for participating in halftime by singing along on Country Roads and doing the Viking Row!

Below is a video of Erling Haaland's visit to BHS, and a video of the full halftime show.

Boys Tennis

Varsity

The Bellevue Boys Tennis Team went 3-1 after a long week of tough competition.

On Monday, the Wolverines took down KingCo league opponent Liberty, 6-1. Sophomore Daniel Pong and freshman Eyyupbeg Atajanov—playing together for the first time—defeated Alex Chang and Ryan Le with poise and precision, sweeping the two sets 6-1, 6-2.

The Overlake School, the 2025 1A state champion, travelled to Bellevue for a rematch of last year’s match, a contest that came down to the final doubles match with Bellevue inching out the win 4-3. This year, the Wolverines got to work quickly, jumping out to the lead in all seven matches. As Overlake crept back, demonstrating their persistence, the boys stayed strong and finished out the match 6-1 for Bellevue. Freshman Jacob Feng played tough, steady, and confident, grinding down #1 Overlake singles representative Eric Lou 6-2, 6-1. #3 singles Daniel Pong, after suffering a 3-6 first set loss, battled back to overcome Linden Dean in a gritty third set tiebreak performance, 10-7. In similar fashion, Eyyupbeg Atajanov fought back after a 4-6 first set loss, clawing back to a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak win in the second set, continuing to hold his ground in a 3rd set 10-8 tiebreaker victory. Senior captain Andy Peng and veteran junior Nicholas Tsiktsiris continue to show why they maintain their #1 doubles position, taking on and defeating a talented Overlake team of Matthew Dai and Yvan Soff. After trading sets 6-3, 4-6, the boys locked in for the third set tiebreaker. After many exciting and hard fought points, Peng and Tsiktsiris prevailed 10-7 in the 3rd set tiebreaker.

What continues to stand out about this team is their guts in high pressure moments. They have lost two tiebreakers all year.

Versus rival Mercer Island on Thursday, Andy and Nicholas competed valiantly, falling 4-6, 6-7 (3-7) to Conrad Morton and Jordan Perlman. Freshman Jacob Feng and Wesley Han played tough versus brothers Shaan and Jay Mehta, eventually losing 5-7, 3-6. Mercer Island swept the Wolverines to maintain their #1 state ranking.

On Friday, Bellevue traveled to historic Stadium High School in Tacoma. On top of a parking garage, with urban high rises on one side, and on the other the majestic Stadium Bowl, the French Renaissance inspired school building, and the deep blue waters of Commencement Bay, the boys battled under the sun against a spirited and hard-working Stadium group. As the sun slowly dipped below the urban skyline, and military cargo vessels and container ships drifted in and out of the Port of Tacoma, the #3 doubles pair of juniors Jinue Kang and Jeffery Lou clashed in a third set tiebreaker. Kang flashed his powerful serve and Lou found his consistency and confidence in a 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 triumph. Bellevue won the overall match with a score of 4-1.

Bellevue sits at #2 in Kingco with a 4-1 overall record. The Wolverines prepare for big league matches at Inglemoor and vs Interlake followed by a tough non-league match at Newport next week.
