GC Update September 6
Back about a dozen years ago, Michigan Swimming hosted a summit to reestablish its Vision, Values, and Mission. Special thanks to Arlene McDonald of Indiana Swimming for leading that weekend workshop (Arlene has been one of the chief architects of hosting the Olympic Trials in Indianapolis). With an enthusiastic, vibrant cross-section of teams represented across the LSC, the following statements and values were agreed upon:
Vision: Pure Michigan! Made in Michigan Swimming!
Values: Integrity, Inclusion, Education, Excellence
Mission: Michigan Swimming inspires excellence through education and develops integrity in a fun, inclusive environment.
In keeping with the vision, values, and mission of Michigan Swimming, your MISI Camps and Clinics Committee has successfully designed and implemented two educationally impactful clinics so far this year: an April clinic for coaches, and the recent Michigan Select Camp for swimmers at the elite level gearing for 2028 and 2032 Trials. “Pure Michigan” has been a dominant theme in selecting presenters for each session, and our resources are rich! “Made in Michigan Swimming” is alive and well as witnessed by Michigan athlete success at all levels of competition this summer. Both clinic/camps have emphasized our core values. Thank you to the members of the Camps and Clinics Committee for their time, collaboration and energy in delivering great educational experiences for Michigan Swimming: Dan Ohm, Stef Kerska, Josh White, Ty Parker, and Adam Cooper. Thanks to our “Pure Michigan” group of athletes at the August camp: Hannah Bellard, Brady Kendall, Tyler Ray, and Jack Wilkening: all UM athletes, all national champions or on their way! Our athlete mentors were instrumental and inspirational in demonstrating that high-level success happens in Michigan Swimming. We look forward to providing more camp and clinic opportunities throughout the years.
Thanks to Terri Eudy of the Governance Committee for preparing that team to take its responsibility for oversight of the Integrity of LSC activities. Governance is an important function of LSC success and requires strong leadership to get the ball rolling in the right direction.
The Championship Meet Committee, chaired by James DeWitt, is keeping the LSC up to date on standards and meet formats. Spring 2027 Regional sites will be announced shortly, and dates, locations, and qualifying times for state championships have been posted.
The Officials Committee, chaired by Holly Russell, is posted with the responsibility to grow the number of engaged and active officials in our LSC. Becoming an official is a great way to help your home team provide oversight of races.
At our House of Delegates Meeting on October 4, elections for a few positions will take
place. Following the HoD meeting, we will host two highly successful coach speakers to continue our coach education: Jeff Cooper (OLY) and Larry Liebowitz. Both Jeff and Larry have delivered excellence in coaching for decades. Jeff has been coaching in Michigan for more than 40 years. Larry began his coaching career in Michigan in the 1970’s and has gone on to contribute to legendary programs across the country. These coaches will share insights into high level success and longevity in coaching.
On the afternoon of HoD, we will celebrate Team Michigan’s very successful summer 14 & U Central Zone Meet.
More detailed information about HoD will be provided in the next newsletter. If you have an interest in being more active in the LSC, consider either seeking a position on the board or participation on a committee. Become a contributing member of the Michigan Swimming Team!
Congratulations again on a great summer and best wishes for a great season,
Vince Gallant
