NATIONAL CHOP SUEY DAY

Get your chopsticks ready! August 29 is National Chop Suey Day ane we are recognizing an American Chinese culinary cuisine each year on August 29.

Chop suey, which means assorted pieces, is a dish in American Chinese cuisine. The main ingredients include meat (chicken, fish, beef, prawns or pork) and eggs. As the meat cooks over high heat, add vegetables (usually bean sprouts, cabbage, and celery). The dish is bound in a starch-thickened sauce. Typically, rice accompanies the flavorful dish, too.

According to food historian Alan Davidson, chop suey is "A prime example of culinary mythology." These food myths happen with popular foods. Below we illustrate several colorful and conflicting stories telling of chop suey's possible origin.

Chop Suey Stories

Some believe chop suey was invented in America by Chinese Americans. However, anthropologist E.N. Anderson finds another conclusion. According to Anderson, the word tsap seui means miscellaneous leftovers and hails from Taishan, a district of Guangdong Province. Many early Chinese immigrants traveled from their home in Taishan to the United States.

Another account claims Chinese American cooks who were working on the transcontinental railroad invented chop suey in the 19th century.

A prime example of culinary mythology. ~ Alan Davidson on the origin of chop suey.

One tale stemming from the Quing Dynasty connects to premier Li Hongzhang's visit in 1896. According to the story, his chef wanted to create a meal suitable for both the Chinese and American palates. Another version of the story tells that Li wandered to a local Chinese restaurant after the hotel kitchen closed. Despite feeling embarrassed because he had nothing prepared to offer, the chef made a dish for Li. Comprised of leftover scraps, the chef created the new "chop suey" dish.

Still another myth tells of an 1860s Chinese restaurant cook in San Francisco. When drunken miners arrived after hours, the chef avoided a beating thanks to some quick thinking. He threw leftovers in a wok, providing a makeshift meal to the miners. The miners loved the dish, asking him for the name of the entree. To which the chef replied, "Chopped Sui."

Traveling to the United States in 1903, Liang Oichao, a Guangdong native, wrote that there existed a food item called chop suey. While regularly served by Chinese restaurateurs, the local Chinese people did not eat this dish.

Ceremonies and observances today, 19 years after Hurricane Katrina's landfall

It was 19 years ago today the Hurricane Katrina roared ashore along the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The storm caused billions of dollars in damage and left some 1,800 people dead.

This morning at the Katrina Memorial in New Orleans, dignitaries and others will gather to mark the anniversary where scores of unidentified or unclaimed bodies are laid to rest.

The Katrina Memorial is at 5056 Canal Street.

There will be a wreath laying.

The event begins at the time of landfall, 8:29am.

In St. Bernard Parish, President Louis Pomes and the St. Bernard Parish Council host the 19th Annual Hurricane Katrina Commemorative Ceremony.

The ceremony will be held at the Shell Beach Katrina Memorial located at 1320 Yscloskey Highway.

It starts at 9:30 a.m.

The program includes reading of the names of the St. Bernard Parish residents killed in Katrina and placing a wreath in the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet.

Saturday there will be a second line marking 19 years after Hurricane Katrina from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Jourdan Avenue in New Orleans.

There will also be a healing ceremony and a reading of the names of those who died.

Driving in JP? Might want to let off the gas! New ticket machines issue quick citations

 By Courtney P.

If you are living in Jefferson Parish, you may have noticed more cars being pulled over, but it isn't because more officers are on the road.

Technology is assisting JPSO for a more efficient way to ticket; cutting the total time of a traffic stop down, allowing officers to make more stops.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto says a new machine can print out a ticket in mere seconds allowing officers to initiate more stops.

“The main complaint we get is about traffic enforcement and we have to use our resources for other calls. We got a bunch of new ticket machines and have issued more tickets in the last two weeks.”

This is just one way technology helps out the department.

Lopinto says that his officers are finding more time to move to other calls.

“Instead of an officer spending ten minutes on a call, they scan the license, the ticket prints and goes to the court docket, and they are on to the next call.”

Corps to again build underwater levee in Mississippi River to battle saltwater intrusion

By MIKE SMITH

A home backs up to the Mississippi River levee next to where the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was building an underwater sill with mud to slow the flow of saltwater on Sept. 26, 2023.

  • Staff photo by Chris Granger NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

A sill will be built in the Mississippi River to combat saltwater intrusion threatening drinking water supplies for a third straight year in a row, the Army Corps of Engineers announced Thursday.

The sill, or underwater levee, will be constructed near Myrtle Grove in Plaquemines Parish. Saltwater intrusion has already reached the Boothville water intake in lower Plaquemines, but the parish has been blending supplies with water from farther upstream and is installing reverse osmosis filtration machines to deal with the threat.

The leading edge, or toe, of the salt water is forecast to reach an area near the Plaquemines-St. Bernard line within the next 28 days, triggering construction of the sill. Drinking water supplies tend to be affected 15-25 miles downriver of the toe. The sill is aimed at slowing or arresting its advance.

"The sill will take approximately two weeks to complete once the contract has been awarded and the dredge mobilized, but it will demonstrate benefits in advance of completion," the Corps said in a statement.

The problem is caused by seasonal low river levels that allow salt water to advance up the river. The deepening of the river for shipping purposes has made the problem worse.

Last year, the salt water overtopped an initial sill built by the Corps. It was then heightened with a notch included in the middle to allow vessels to pass. Earlier predictions that saltwater contamination would affect New Orleans area drinking supplies did not come to pass, but Plaquemines Parish spent months dealing with the problem.

University of Holy Cross to hold Constitutional Carry & Self Defense Class August 29

Public confusion still swirls around Louisiana’s new firearm carry laws

New Orleans – The University of Holy Cross, in conjunction with Pierre Basic Guns, is hosting two gun safety and self-defense workshops on its Algiers campus on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to help Louisiana residents and the greater UHC community better understand the nuances of the new constitutional carry laws in the State of Louisiana and how the new laws impact their rights and responsibilities. Sponsored by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), these workshops are designed to educate the public on the legal aspects of self-defense and carrying firearms.

The workshops will be held on August 29, 2024, with two available sessions: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Both sessions will be conducted at the University of Holy Cross Moreau Center, located at 4123 Woodland Drive in New Orleans.

Each session will last approximately two hours and is open to anyone 18 years and older who wishes to deepen their understanding of this significant legal change regarding the legalities of carrying a firearm in public.

“The need for clear and accurate information is greater than ever,” says University of Holy Cross Police Chief and Director of Public Safety Marshall E. Pierre, Sr. “We are excited to host these informational workshops so our community can feel more educated and empowered about self-defense, especially around the subject of carrying firearms.”

Participants will gain valuable insights into their rights and the best practices for responsible gun ownership and self-defense. These sessions aim to empower attendees with the knowledge needed to navigate the legal landscape confidently and responsibly.

The workshops will cover critical topics such as:

  • The implications of being armed in public
  • Staying safe by avoiding danger
  • Pre-threat indicators
  • De-escalation
  • Using force
  • Seeking further training
  • Differences between carrying with a permit vs. without a permit in Louisiana

"I have conducted several of these events, and I've found that many participants are often unaware of the specifics of the law, including what constitutes a justified act of self-defense," says Pierre Basic, founder of Pierre Basic Guns. "One of the most surprising aspects for attendees is learning about the restriction on carrying within 1,000 feet of a school zone without a permit."

To register for a session or to learn more about the workshop series, please contact Pierre Basic Guns at (555) 123-4567 or visit their website at www.pierrebasicguns.com.

What Meat is Used to Make the Italian Dish "Osso Buco"?

Ox

Beef

Veal

Pork

Veal shanks are the traditional meat for osso buco, and probably what you're familiar with seeing on restaurant menus. But the shank portion of several animals can benefit from this same preparation. You'll want to use shanks for this; otherwise it's not osso bucco.

NATIONAL LEMON JUICE DAY

When the sun is blazing high in the sky, National Lemon Juice Day comes along just in time to bring a refreshing squeeze to just about anything. On August 29th, celebrate with a tart drop of lemon juice in your cooking, beverages, or freshen up the world around you.

These brightly colored sour fruits originated in the Himalayan Mountains millions of years ago. However, they have evolved since then, and today the citrus fruit is grown commercially in temperate climates. In the United States, California and Arizona produce more lemons than any other state.

Why Lemon Juice?

Why do we love lemons so much? Is it because we enjoy watching a baby's face scrunch up at their first taste of the lemon juice? Well, we do, but that's not the only reason. In cooking, the acid in lemon juice enhances the flavors. Add lemon juice to a salad dressing, and suddenly your salad goes from ho-hum to wow! In a sauce, the addition of lemon juice will transform it from being something that drowns a meal to something that brightens it. This one ingredient can save an entire dish.

The same applies to beverages. Lemon juice adds punch to teas, soda, and even water. But it also adds an extra level of flavor for mixed drinks. Bourbon, tequila, gin, cognac, vodka. They all have recipes that call for lemon juice, and that's because, without it, the drink would be missing a vital element to the cocktail. Every bartender worth their salt has fresh lemons behind the bar. Alternatively, when paired with honey and a hot beverage, lemon juice soothes a sore throat and cough.

But lemon juice doesn't stop there. No way. This powerhouse also makes us and our homes look good, too. Everything from home remedies to cleansers using lemon juice can be found on the internet. While you might not want to use fresh lemons (save those for the cooking and beverages), you can use bottled to save a few pennies. The fresh scent of lemon will also lift your mood as you brighten your pots and pans, clean your pores and windows and make your garbage disposal smell fresh again. While you're at it, you should probably pour yourself a chilled glass of lemonade, too.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

Rhythm & Roses, presented by BK house neighbor and benefactor James Douglas Hislop, will run through Friday, November 1, except for October 11, and will feature a wide array of popular New Orleans talents. The opening concert will be presented in part by NOLAxNOLA.

Future dates include:

October 4:            Jason Neville Funky Soul Band

October 18:           Helen Gillet and Rebelle Musique

Also in September, BK House will host the second annual Beautiful Spaces Symposium on Saturday, September 14, focusing on the legacy of gardens in New Orleans.  The inspiring day will explore the rich history, design and cultural significance of the city’s gardens and will feature distinguished experts covering a broad spectrum of landscapes from formal parterre gardens to indigenous wild spaces. The program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, with coffee, a boxed lunch and closing reception.  Visit www.bkhouse.org for details.

Dedicated to maintaining the historical treasure, the annual BK House Soiree in the Vieux Carre’ will take place on Sunday, September 29. The fundraiser will be held from 5-8 pm, featuring John Boutte in the Courtyard and Amber Rachelle & the Sweet Potatoes in the Parterre Garden and a delicious Sunday Supper by 12 Seasons Catering & Events.
