Milagros was born 16 years ago with some health challenges. But, someone forgot to tell her.
Her birth mother could not care for her and made the heartfelt decision to entrust her unborn child to the A Safe Haven for Newborns program. The birth mother knew that her newborn would be placed in a caring home and would be able to receive the care and opportunities that she could not give her.
Because it was a miracle that she survived the birth, Nick Silverio, founder of A Safe Haven for Newborns, gave the infant the name Milagros. Shortly after birth, Milagros was placed in the loving arms of her adoptive mother and today Milagros is a flourishing, smart, and charismatic young lady; very inquisitive, with a kind heart. She takes part in competitions at her local U.S. Paralympic Sport Club. Her favorite competitions are the 100- and 200-meter races and the long jump. In school, her favorite subject is science.
The summer before the pandemic, she attended an overnight camp where she served as a Junior Camper Counselor to a girl who “has less abilities” than she. Giving back is something Milagros enjoys doing and can’t wait to go back to camp and help others.
Milagros and her family remain close to Nick, or as she calls him Uncle Nick, and is always ready to talk about what Safe Haven means to her and the chance that she was given to make a difference in the world.
