Superintendent's Weekly Message

Dear HBCSD Families,

Later this week, families of students in grades K–2 will receive their mCLASS/DIBELS Home Connect Screening Results via hard copy in the mail. These reports provide important information about your student’s early literacy development. You can learn more about our assessment process here.

If your student’s results indicate potential risk, or a “Well Below Benchmark” performance, your school teams, including myself, will review the screening results along with additional classroom data to determine whether additional support may be beneficial. Supports may include:

  • Evidence-based literacy instruction focused on the student’s specific needs
  • Small group instruction
  • Additional reading intervention pull-out support by site specialists
  • Before/after-school intervention
  • Ongoing progress monitoring
  • Home support materials
  • Further evaluation, if appropriate, for students not responding to interventions

As a parent/guardian, you are your student’s first and most important teacher. Here are a few ways you can support learning at home:

  • Read Together: Build strong reading skills by reading regularly with your child
  • Practice: The key to learning is repetition, and your child may require additional repetitions of explicit phonics lessons to gain mastery
  • Promote Positive Attendance: There is a strong correlation between poor attendance and a higher risk of reading difficulties
  • Stay Informed: Monitor progress and connect with your child’s teacher with any questions

For additional support, the mCLASS Home Connect website offers free literacy resources and at-home practice activities tailored by skill. After receiving your student’s results, we encourage you to explore these resources.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your child’s learning.

Warm regards,

Dr. Susan Wildes

I am so pumped up after being able to participate in my first Dolphin Dash! What a great day we had! I want to give a huge thank you to Dani Josephs and Shannon Henderson, HVPTO - HVS Dolphin Dash Chairs, for all their dedication to making this event such a success. Thank you as well to our families for your generosity. It is because of your contribution that we will be able to fund so many enriching experiences, including our field trips, lunch clubs, and special programs.

This week and next, our 1st graders will visit the El Dorado Nature Center, another wonderful opportunity made possible by the support of our HVPTO.

As we head into our last week before the break, I want to wish you and your family a wonderful time together. Thank you, as always, for partnering with us to support your kids!

Wishing you a happy and healthy week off!

Warmly,

Hermosa Vista School Principal News

This week was full of excitement and activity! Our Dolphin Dash at Vista was a huge success, featuring fun experiences like the LA Galaxy Star Squad and a special visit from Valerie the Dolphin! Students loved taking shots on goal and running laps, while being cheered on by parents and our community. A big thank you to Dani Josephs and Shannon Henderson, HVPTO - HVS Dolphin Dash Chairs, for organizing such a wonderful event. Your efforts help continue to support programs at Hermosa Vista.

Our 4th graders also enjoyed a special author visit from Stuart Gibbs, known for his exciting, fast-paced, and humorous books for young readers. He shared how his background in screenwriting influences his storytelling, and we hope students left inspired.

As we move into Spring Break, I hope that you have a wonderful, fun-filled time together with family and friends.

Warmly,

Hermosa Valley School Principal News

We had an incredible HVS Dolphin Dash at Valley, bringing together students, staff, and families for a fun and energetic event. A heartfelt thank you to our HVS Dolphin Dash Chairs, Dani Josephs and Shannon Henderson, for their leadership and dedication in making this event such a success. We are also grateful to our volunteers, staff, student joggers, and everyone who made a pledge in support of our Hermosa Schools. Your generosity makes a meaningful difference for our students.

Our 5th graders also enjoyed a special author visit from Stuart Gibbs, who inspired students by sharing his writing process and discussing his newest release, Ape Escape. It was wonderful to welcome him back to our campus following his previous visit in 2023. Special thanks to Ms. Meyers and Ms. Kelly, our Vista & Valley Librarians, and {pages} a bookstore for arranging his visit to our schools.

We are now in week two of our “A Day in the Life of a Student,” continuing through April 3. Our middle school teachers are stepping into their students’ shoes by attending classes, completing assignments, and following the same expectations, helping to build empathy and strengthen our inclusive, supportive school environment.

On Wednesday, April 1, we look forward to our 5th Grade 17th Century American History Day. Students will dress in period attire and take part in hands-on, interactive stations like Colonial School, Quill Writing, Colonial Dancing, and Cornhusk Dolls, followed by Colonial Trade and fresh-churned butter tasting. Volunteers and donations are still needed, and we appreciate any support in making this a memorable experience for our students.

Our HVS Athletics Spring Season is underway. We are wrapping up our Spring Sports tryouts this week with new surfers trying out for the HVS Surf Team. Games for Boys Volleyball and Girls Flag Football will begin April 14 and run through May 12. Dates for Track & Field meets and Surf competitions will be shared when available, and HVS Cheer Team tryout announcements for the 2026-2027 school year are coming soon. Visit our HVS Athletics Program website to stay connected.

Wishing all of our Hermosa Valley students, families, and staff a safe, restful, and enjoyable Spring Break!

Warmly,

Jessica Bledsoe, Hermosa Valley Principal

Hermosa Valley Math Olympiad Team

In it's first year, the Hermosa Valley Math Olympiad team, led by Ms. Danika Brown, 6th/7th Grade Math Teacher, brings together a group of dedicated and curious students who enjoy tackling challenging problems and thinking creatively. Throughout the year, team members work together to strengthen their problem-solving skills, explore advanced math concepts, and build confidence in a supportive environment. By collaborating, practicing, and competing, students develop perseverance, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for mathematics, all while representing our school with pride. Our HVS team has competed in two competitions thus far and will compete in the LA County Office of Education Math Field Day on Saturday, April 18, from 8:00 AM-5:30 PM.
