2026 Graduate Award winner Kevine Dupree

Inspiring Sparks Were Flying at the Annual Dr. Audrey Evans Benefit

“Sharing the Spark” was the theme, the mood, and the outcome of our Annual Dr. Audrey Evans Benefit, which drew a sellout crowd of 350 guests to the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum on May 20.

Sparks flew from the stage…

…to light the room with inspiration and excitement.

Jumping to their feet for a standing ovation, the audience celebrated Kevine Dupree as he concluded an eloquent and moving speech accepting the 2026 Graduate Award. Now 22 and a college graduate working in the culinary arts, Kevine spoke from the heart about “growing up as a gay, Black man” and the personal journey that “taught me the power of staying true to who I am.”

This 2017 St. James graduate earned a diploma from Mercy Career and Technical High School and a BA in Psychology from Lincoln University. He works for the Culinary Careers Program (C•CAP) in Philadelphia.

“To be recognized in this moment is not just about achievement, it’s about the journey, the lessons, the resilience, and the truth I’ve carried with me every step of the way,” Kevine told the audience. “The version of me standing here today was never guaranteed. It took time. It took growth. It took unlearning fear and learning courage. It took finding the strength within myself to say, ‘I am deserving. I am worthy. I belong here just as much

as anyone else.’”

Our Graduate Support team has walked beside Kevine throughout his journey and continues to do so, living into our commitment to every St. James graduate’s growth, possibility, and purpose. The team connects graduates with the guidance, relationships, and opportunities they need to thrive and pursue their goals.

In presenting the award to Kevine, Assistant Head of School for Graduate Support Sonya Kedarnath shared, “Kevine embodies perseverance and purpose. He brings insight, curiosity, and warmth into every space. Kevine is a living example of what it means to share your spark with the world.”

Joining Sonya at the podium, St. James’ Head Chef Deborah Anthony recalled Kevine showing curiosity in the kitchen from the moment he arrived in 5th grade. “He always seemed genuinely interested in what I was doing,” she said. “His passion for cooking was so deep that he would cook for his family at home, and his father was so proud of him.”

In sharing his experience of being labeled “as different, as an outcast,” Kevine was intentional about encouraging others who have felt they “didn’t fit into the mold.”

He directed his closing advice to students:

“Be bold. Be innovative. Be inspiring. Take up space. Ask questions. Challenge norms. And above all else, be yourself unapologetically, fully, and without compromise. Because the world doesn’t need more copies. It needs truth. It needs you.”

Everyone shared joyfully…

…during an evening of togetherness and celebration.

As guests arrived for the Benefit, St. James School Student Council leaders asked them how they share their spark — and 98 guests stopped to jot down an answer for posting on a display. The student leaders then set the tone for the evening by sharing from the podium the ways they personally inspire others. Student Council President Kahlil said, "I share my spark by leading with kindness and compassion."

Earl Jones, “PopPop” to 7th grader Rahmair, shared a neighbor’s-eye view of the impact being made by The Welcome Table, and why his involvement grew from receiving a flyer in the mail to participating and volunteering in multiple programs that benefit the community. The why? “It’s not so much for the activities being offered, but more so for the opportunity to socialize with an upbeat and positive group of individuals, both staff and participants.”

In the spirit of St. James Co-Founder Dr. Audrey Evans, 181 guests shared their support by donating over $190,000 to the night’s Total Care Challenge. Add that to dollars shared by the event’s lead investors and sponsors, revenue from ticket sales and the silent auction, and the benefit raised more than $800,000 for the Community of St. James.

Representing Benefit honoree The Epiphany School, leaders Dr. Michelle Sanchez, School Principal, and Father John H. Finley, Head of School, accepted the award plaque from President Dave Kasievich, Ed.D..

The Rev. Dr. Mary Barber accepted the Benefit honoree award plaque from President Dave Kasievich, Ed.D. on behalf of the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.

We are deeply grateful for Sarah’s leadership and her legacy of vision, compassion, and unwavering commitment to students and families, which will continue to guide us. We are likewise grateful that her presence and influence will continue to be felt on campus through her family's engagement, including her husband, Kevin Todd, Vice President for Operations and Strategy.

You’re invited! The Community of St. James will host a Celebration of Sarah Carroll on Friday, July 17, from 3:30–6:00 pm. Graduates, families, volunteers, donors, and friends are warmly invited to attend. To RSVP, please email Dave Kasievich at dkasievich@stjamesphila.org.
