Congratulations to Sekou:
YVCHR's Volunteer of the Month!
|
Sekou has been a member of the YVCHR family since 2017 when he attended his first YVC Summer of Service session. Since then he has participated in a wide variety of projects from playing with kids with special needs to delivering food to senior citizens in an affordable housing community. His favorite project to date has been our monthly Pen Pal virtual project where he has been able to connect with a resident at the Gardens at Warwick Forest who is isolated due to the pandemic. He says the best part about volunteering is seeing the smiles on the faces of those he helps! We are grateful to his mother and sister for encouraging Sekou to become a youth volunteer with YVCHR!
After high school, he plans to attend college to pursue a career in engineering.

Sekou loves playing basketball and listening to music in his free time.

Registration for our 2021 Summer of Service program begins on Monday, May 3rd!
|
|
Important: Online registration begins on Monday, May 3rd at 8:00AM. The registration link is below and will also be available on the homepage of our website.
This year’s camp program will continue to be modified to allow for the implementation of additional precautions and safety measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to remain vigilant and offer a safe Summer of Service experience like we did in 2020.
Registration will be online again for this year’s camp sessions. Despite some of the limitations of online registration, it has proven to be the most efficient method. Please note that we are not able to “hold” spots for any participants; all registrations will have to take place through the online portal, and we will create a wait list once all available spots have been filled. If you are unable to secure a spot, please email kmorgan@yvchr.org to be added to the wait list. Be sure to read the refund policy posted on our Summer of Service website.
**Please only sign up for one week. Due to space limitations, youth are only able to participate in one session. Thank you for understanding!**
The cost per participant for one 4-day session is $90; payment will be taken online through the registration site, which will be made available on Monday, May 3 at 8:00 AM.
NOTE: YVCHR will continue to require face masks, daily temperature checks at drop-off (contact free) and frequent cleaning procedures in order to keep our youth, partnering agencies and staff as safe and healthy as possible.
For planning purposes, the sessions are listed below. Service sites for the first 5 weeks will be the same this year - S.A.M.E. (So All May Eat), Bluebird Gap Farm, Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, and Parkview Community Garden. Please note the start and end times and that locations may be adjusted due to weather or last minute conflicts with organizations. YVCHR is unable to provide transportation to or from the service sites, so please plan accordingly.
Monday - Thursday, 8:30 am-1:00 pm, various sites on the Peninsula:
- June 28th - July 1st
- July 5th - July 8th
- July 12th - July 15th
- July 19th - July 22nd
- July 26th - July 29th
- August 2nd - August 5th (Newsome Park Elementary Courtyard Renovation Week)

Giving Day is May 11th!
This year we have an INTENSE competition brewing between our Team Leaders from CNU and our Youth Advisory Board (YAB) members. If the YAB group raises more money than the Team Leaders, then the YAB will pie a Team Leader! Will it be Brandon, Josh, or Noah who gets pied? Or will a YAB member be the one to take a pie to the face? Your donations will decide, so pick your side and help support YVCHR!
Want to start your own fundraiser for YVCHR? Create a campaign and become a YVCHR ambassador! Contact Katie for more information.
