The year seems to fly by. Fall starts in September, but everyone can still feel the warm, humid air, the sound of cicadas, and the days that stay light until past 7 PM. There are changes too: schools return to session, the days shorten by a few minutes each day, and after Labor Day, everyone is saying goodbye to Summer 2023.

As we often do during a season change, we reset our priorities; let's focus on things we can control, things that will improve our health and make us more resilient against life's speed bumps by knowing where to get information about our breast health when we have questions; let's get a plan in place to be more well-rounded individuals.

PINK Breast Center has an extensive resource page that includes information on breast health. There is also a series of curated content by Dr. Lisa Sheppard of PINK Breast Center to answer questions and help you get through stressful times.

If you are due for your annual mammogram, contact us today to schedule an appointment! And, if you haven't already, sign up for a mid-month BSE reminder.

Common breast conditions

Having some discomfort in your breasts is not necessarily a cause for panic. There are some very common conditions such as cysts, lumps, inflammation, itchiness, etc., that can cause discomfort or pain, but are benign. Here are some ideas on how to relieve breast tenderness or pain:
  • A warm shower, bath or hot water bottle to the breast
  • An ice pack over the breast may be more effective than warmth
  • A comfortable, supportive bra, such as a sports bra
  • Going without a bra may be more comfortable
  • Reduce your intake of caffeine, including coffee, tea, cola and chocolate
  • Reduce your intake of salt and fat
  • There is some evidence that suggests the use of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B1 (thiamine) and/or evening primrose oil may help
  • Relaxation.

If none of these suggestions relieve your symptoms, you should discuss with your doctor.
