SPECIAL EDITION TO ALL OUR FANS

Waltham, Mass. 5/06/2019
Welcome to 240 Beaver Street, Waltham, where these newsletters and our market programs are produced. We're located in a small office on the first floor of the Waltham Field Station, which we hope will eventually become the Center for Urban Sustainability. Together with City, State, and the wonderful organizations that also share this space, we are working to make that happen. On Saturday we had a fun filled and very busy Open House where elected officials, and fans came to see all of the good work happening here. After an introduction ceremony, tours were given throughout topped off by an amazing plant sale of herbs, flowers, and vegetables. Hopefully the
dull, dreary winter has been ushered out. The groups who call this work space home are eager to get on with the spring season.

In addition to Mass Farmers Markets, some of the other organizations include: Grow Native Massachusetts, Waltham Fields Community Farm, Waltham Land Trust, Bark Agility Training, Green Rows of Waltham, Charles River Dog Club, Congregation Dorshei Tzedek, a donation garden for the Newton Food Pantry, Boston Area Climate Experiment, and the Middlesex Volunteer Fife and Drum.

A Brief History: Cornelia Warren (1854-1921) owned the land that is now the Waltham Field Station. Upon her death, her property was divided into several parcels. Some was given to the City of Waltham to expand the intersection of Waverly Oakes Road and Beaver Street; some to the State of Massachusetts for use by the Mass Agricultural College and Harvard College for teaching landscape architecture, and some to the Massachusetts Chapter of the Girl Scouts of America. Cornelia Warren was a woman ahead of her time. She was an accomplished horseback rider and a successful businesswoman and dairy farm owner. The barn was immaculate and the cows were happy!
