HANWASH In-Country Director, Lunise Jules

My introduction to HANWASH has been a sharing of success stories but also of frustration. The journey of Laveng, a rural community of Cavaillon in the South of Haiti, one that brings joy, helps me understand what gets my new co-workers, the Rotary members, passionate about their work in WASH. Before the intervention of HANWASH in 2021, the only available source in Laveng was an unprotected spring located miles away, forcing the population o endure long, arduous journeys for water that was neither treated nor responsibly managed. Sanitation practices were poor, with the community struggling to achieve the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.

In 2023, Through its Adopt-A-Well program, and in collaboration with its partner Haiti Outreach and the local authorities, HANWASH inaugurated a new handpump well in Laveng on May 23th, In addition to improving access to drinking water, with the contribution of its partner Haiti Outreach, HANWASH helped the community of Laveng get organized around their newly acquired gift of water to protect its sanity through better hygiene practices, manage the system and guarantee its sustainability through regular payment. Open defecation practices dropped drastically, and a Water Point Committee was created and succeeded in getting subscribers to accept to pay a small fee to cover maintenance expenses. Their discipline paid off as the state institution water provider decided to build on their proven management capacity and invested in upgrading the Laveng handpump into a solar-powered kiosk, equipped with a reservoir, a chlorination system, and a complete solar electrical setup (including panels, batteries, inverter, and regulator).

Today, as I have just joined HANWASH, I am witnessing the struggle of two small localities within the commune of Ferrier to gain access to water. For the past three years, they have been hoping to see the end of this nightmare where drinking water is a luxury. HANWASH ‘s efforts to meet this expectation has not yet come to fruition. It is so hard to explain the technicalities of water drilling, level of salinity, presence of bacteria. Meillac is one of these two localities. Just a few hundred families live there, everyday hoping something will change. I see the embarrassment on the face of members of the group as we discuss the quality of the water we twice found, mostly the presence of E-coli. The president of the committee raises his voice to make a point I was not expecting: How can we control the behavior of hundreds of people who cross the Dominican border through our town, back and forth, everyday? We can try to convince the population here to build their own latrines and use them, but we are powerless when it comes to people going through our communal section to cross the border. I left the place feeling as frustrated and embarrassed as the group but with a determination to be part of HANWASH venture.

It was so great to meet so many HANWASH supporters and to make new friends at the Rotary International Convention in Taipei! Many thanks to our friends at WASH for hosting and working with us at the booth in the House of Friendship. We were also honored to officially be named as the recipient of the Programs of Scale program on the big stage at the Rotary International Convention! See you all next year in Barcelona!

A Defining Moment for Water in Haiti

- by Emily Leitzinger

A new Rotary year brings renewed energy, fresh leadership, and new opportunities to create lasting change. This year, HANWASH is stepping into one of the most significant opportunities in our history.

HANWASH and our partners are launching a $4 million fundraising campaign to unlock the full implementation of the Collaboration for Sustainable Water and Sanitation Systems in Haiti, Rotary’s Programs of Scale.

This initiative brings together an extraordinary coalition committed to transforming water and sanitation systems across Haiti, including Rotary District 7020, Haiti Outreach, Hope for Haiti, DINEPA, and many other dedicated organizations, institutions, Rotarians, and supporters. Together, we are building sustainable systems that will improve health, strengthen communities, and create lasting impact for generations.

Reaching our $4 million goal will help move this historic collaboration from vision to full implementation. In the coming months, you will also hear more about a new HANWASH Fundraising Task Force. This group of experienced Rotary and nonprofit leaders will help expand our reach, open new doors, and invite more people to become part of this effort.

There is a role for everyone.

One of the most powerful ways to help is by becoming a monthly donor. Recurring gifts provide the steady, dependable funding HANWASH needs to plan responsibly and sustain long-term progress. Whether you give $25, $50, $100, or more each month, your commitment becomes part of something much bigger.

As we begin this new Rotary year, we invite you to help write the next chapter of HANWASH.

Become a monthly donor. Share our mission. Help us reach $4 million and expand sustainable water and sanitation systems across Haiti.

New District Governor in District 7020 is Lindsey Cancino!

Lindsey became involved in Rotary in The Bahamas due to his wish to give back to the community in positive ways. He joined the Rotary Club of East Nassau and rapidly was appointed to the Board. From then, he became deeply committed to the Rotary Foundation, serving at club, District and Zone level over the years. He has been the recipient of several awards, including the Rotary Foundation's Citation for Meritorious Service. His involvement with HANWASH began when PRID Barry Rassin spoke to his club in 2019. It lit a passion in Lindsey - he understood it would take generations to get it done, but he was determined to become involved. He contacted then District 7020 Governor Jeremy Hurst, who was spearheading HANWASH and volunteered his support. He became the co-Chair of the Engagement Committee, together with then DG Delma Maduro. Lindsey expressed the opinion that "it's starting to take off now. It really needed to be Haitian-led in order for it to succeed in the country it's taking place in - and now we're finally there! With support growing internationally, HANWASH is moving forward."

DG Lindsey will be hosting the Rotary District 7020 conference in Nassau in 2027, at the Atlantis Resort. He has enthusiastic support from the district, his home country of The Bahamas, and his family: wife, Lesley and twin girls Jacqueline and Sophie...and his dog (his son) Findlay!

Welcome the following new leaders in HANWASH!

New Board of Directors are: PDG David Kirkaldy, Wildaine André and PDG William Aiken.

The Haiti Liaison Committee recently welcomed new officers to their committee. Congratulations to them: Chair Nixon Seme, Vice Chair Emmanuel Charles, Secretary Khadija Benoit, Rotaract Liaison Geralda Sylvain.
