The Wood Between the Worlds

by Fr. Casey

We are entering once more upon the holiest of weeks. It is our honor and duty as Christians to return to Jerusalem in mind and heart to walk the Way of the Cross with Jesus. I hope you will be able to journey the whole way and will allow yourself time to pause on each holy stone in the path to Calvary. For everything in the story of Jesus Christ builds toward and culminates in the Passion. Christ crucified and raised is ever and always the fullness of the Gospel.

This Sunday, and throughout the week, our eyes will be turned directly at the cross. For most Episcopalians, this is not a common direction for our gaze, as we tend to spend more time and imagination on the hillsides where Jesus taught than on the hillside where he died. But we must go to Golgotha with him, for it was always his destination. He did not intend merely to preach the Sermon on the Mount, but to live it, and love of God, love of neighbor, and love of enemy find their fullest expression in the self-emptying sacrifice of the cross. It is in his arms stretched wide that we can finally see the extent of his yearning to draw the whole world to God.

Among our sisters and brothers in Christ, there is a propensity to condense the meaning of this week into a simple theory of atonement. But reducing the cross to a single meaning is...

Help Us Break The Fast

Every year, following the Great Vigil of Easter, the parish celebrates with what is fondly known as the Break the Fast party, a parish-wide potluck brimming with food and conviviality.

Beginning this Sunday and running through Maundy Thursday, there will be a signup table in the Gathering space. All food and drinks are provided through parishioner contributions. You can also sign up online via the button below.

We welcome gifts to help pay for paper goods, cutlery, additional food, flowers and some of the decorations. If you cannot attend, or if bringing deviled eggs is just not your thing, you can still participate through a contribution - no amount is too small. On the Dedication Form select Break The Fast.

Outreach Successes

Easter Drive for Gateway of Grace. We are pleased to share that this year's drive to support Gateway of Grace’s Easter Egg Hunt for refugee families was a tremendous success. Thanks to your generosity, we collected over 200 individual snack bags, 50 Easter baskets, and over 700 candy-filled eggs. Transfiguration has a long history of supporting Gateway families. On behalf of the Outreach Committee and the families whose Easter celebrations will be blessed by this drive, thank you!

Clothes Horse Donations for Austin Street Center. From time-to-time, our Clothes Horse receives more donations of clothing than we can use. When this happens, St. Hilda’s and our Outreach Committee work together to donate some of the excess to Austin Street Center. This week, Austin Street thanked us for a record-setting donation of clothing for their clients. Special thanks to all who bring their gently-used clothing to support the Clothes Horse, as well as Austin Street.
