Rev. Robert Laird Brashear

God we thank you

for sharing your beloved child, Bob Brashear,

with us for a season.

We are grateful for

his deep faith

his commitment to follow Jesus

his willingness to take risks

his fierce love

his profound understanding of justice

his unfailing practice that

"nothing about us will happen without us"

no matter who us might be.

We are grateful for

the ways he served

the witnesses he made

the stands he took.

We are grateful for

his leadership in the Presbytery of New York City

his presence in the Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare Association

his service to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

We are grateful that Bob

helped make the world

a little brighter

a little more loving

a little more just.

We are grateful that Bob helped make us

a little more faithful

a little more loving

a little more just.

We thank you God,

that we shared life and ministry with

Bob Brashear

and that Bob now rests in your eternal grace and love and care.

Public Sanctuaries: "A Case for Redefining the Black Church as Public Spaces"

Please join Design Trust and Bricks and Mortals on YouTube Live (link TBA) for a special event.

The conversation will be moderated by Journee Harris, and co-moderated by Rev. Sue Harris-Green, the host of the weekly radio show “Sunday Evening with Reverend Sue.” Joining the conversation as guest speakers are Reverend Derrick McQueen, Pastor of St. James Presbyterian Church; Jason Labate, an attorney focusing on faith-based development, affordable housing & community development; and Rev. Bridget Kelso, Minister of Engagement at West End Church and lecturer at the City College of New York.

The panel will discuss the many ways planners, developers and clergy members can protect and honor Black Churches as historical, cultural and political centers.

Inspired by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's call for churches to be active participants in the struggle for racial and economic justice in his book,"Strength to Love," Black Churches, have historically served as a space for people to gather, create, organize, celebrate, receive support and seek refuge.

JMC was part of a joint effort led by HALT Solitary Campaign protesting the untimely and inhumane death of 40 year-old Michael Nieves.

He was the 13th inmate to die in 2022 while in the custody of the Department of Correction.

The Legal Aid Society that represented Michael Nieves reported that he suffered from “severe mental illness,”. According to the New York Times it is alleged that, two officers and a captain watched, without rendering aid, as Nieves attempted to commit suicide. The paper reports that the officers failed to act for at least 10 minutes. Mr. Nieves was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and put on life support; he died Tuesday night.

“That this week’s tragedy occurred in the unit of the jail that is ostensibly most trained and equipped to jail people with serious mental illness underscores the jail’s fundamental inability to keep safe the people in [the Department of Correction’s] care.”-Legal Aid
