National GEAR UP Week

September 23-27

National GEAR UP Week is scheduled for next week! How do you plan to celebrate? Since this is NCCEP's 25th anniversary, they have created new tools for this occasion. They have a toolkit on their website. You can find it here: https://www.edpartnerships.org/gearup-week-toolkit.

Congratulations!

To Jana Burd for being selected to the NCCEP Student Engagement Committee and to Janet Stake for being selected to present at the National GEAR UP Academy in February on behalf of the NCCEP Communications Committee.

Posters!

We are working on a new/old project which we hope to deliver very soon. During the last grant, in an effort to thwart the perceived stigma of attending a community college, we created a poster that focuses on the vast array of available programs of study available at all the NSHE institutions. We've tried a few times during the current grant to update it and we finally have one ready to go. They will be printed and delivered to all of our high schools and colleges in the coming weeks.

SSA Kick Offs

Throughout the last week of August, all of our GEAR UP high schools hosted their annual fall kickoffs with Student Success Agency (SSA). Guest speakers from across the country spoke to our students about their stories and the helpful resources that SSA has created specifically for them. Some of our schools were even able to test out the latest updates to the Winbox app that SSA uses to provide digital support to our students. These upgraded aspects to the program allow students to easily schedule virtual tutoring sessions as well as receive additional support like essay review and interview preparation. These kickoff sessions provided a reminder of what GEAR UP is, as well as updated information from our partners at Student Success Agency. What a great way to kick-off our new school year!

New NSHE Intro Events

The NSHE team is trying something new this year for our introduction events! Since our events first changed to in-person events following the COVID pandemic, we held College and Scholarship Fairs during the school day at each of our schools featuring each NSHE college and a few invited scholarship program guests. This year, in an effort to try something different and incorporate parents, these events will be by school district rather than individual school and held in the evenings. We will still be inviting our scholarship guests such as PEF, the Treasurer's Office and Promise Scholarship staff. Each one will be planned in collaboration with the Specialists but will have differences depending on school needs. The schedule for these events is:

  • CCSD-October 15th, 5:00 - 7:00 at CSN West Charleston campus, Student Union ballroom
  • PVHS-October 17th, times/location TBD
  • MCHS-October 23rd, 5:00 - 7:00 in the Serpent Union

So Long Kevin!

Unfortunately, it is time to say "good-bye" to Kevin Altman, our Research Administrator out of the NSHE Las Vegas office. Kevin joined us in November of 2022, having previously worked as an advisor at CSN for a number of years. At this time, he has decided to retire from higher education and pursue others interests. We will miss you, Kevin! Thank you for all of your help processing our funding requests and our annual reporting!

We wish Kevin the best of luck in his next endeavor!
