Happy Spring!
Welcome back! We hope that you enjoyed your Spring Break and, whether traveling or staying close to home, that you found some time to relax and enjoy the Easter holiday.
This week marks the end of the 3rd quarter of the school year. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, April 12th. As we near the start of the fourth quarter, we have a mere 46 days left in the school year. June 6th will be here before we know it and we have a lot to get done!
In addition to our normal day-to-day activities, April sets the stage for our Book Tasting event and spring Scholastic Book Fair. The Book Fair will be held during student library times during the week of April 22nd, with the Book Tasting event on Wednesday, April 24th. Our Book Tasting is one of the most fun and highly attended events during the school year. Our very creative staff set up themed environments in their classrooms with books and treats for our families to enjoy. It is a nice opportunity to relax, read with your child, and enjoy the company of other CenDen families.
This year, we will be introduced to our incoming 4K students and their families with a “Welcome to 4K” event on Monday, April 22nd. This is a chance for our families to visit our school, meet our staff, and ask questions about 4K. If you have a child that will be entering 4K next year or know someone who does, please be sure to contact Mrs. Draper in the school office to set up an appointment to join us.
With summer just around the corner, we would like to encourage you to enroll your child in the Kids’ Academy. This is a summer program that combines summer enrichment fun with some academic opportunities. The K-5 program will be held at Central-Denison and will be run by Mr. Nugent and I with the support of other Lake Geneva Schools staff. The program will be Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 3:00PM. There will be two sessions, June 17th through June 28th and then again from July 8th through the 19th. Bus transportation will be available from designated locations. The cost participation fee for all Lake Geneva Joint #1 students will be $50 per two week session. This is not a YMCA program. If you would like more information please contact the school office or email questions to kidsacademy@badger.k12.wi.us. If you would like to register, you can do so at the following link or on the district website.

Spring is a challenging time for educators. We sort of live with one foot in the present school year and one in the next. We are working hard to share new knowledge with our students and celebrate their growth, and yet we need to think about moving them out of their current learning environment while creating plans that will set them up for success next year. We are grateful for each day that we can spend with your children. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Important Information about Pick Ups
|
Dear CenDen Families:
Anticipating more snowfall, I wanted to share a few VERY IMPORTANT reminders with you about our pick-up and drop-off procedures. The normal procedures are included in the handout below for your review, but I would like to share some additional helpful hints that make a big difference, especially with the addition of snow.
-
Please approach the lines with caution. With the addition of snow piles and slippery roadways, the street narrows down a bit making it more difficult to see clearly and maneuver around safely.
-
Have your children get in and out of the car on the passenger side of the vehicle. This keeps them safely on the sidewalk with no risk of getting pinched between two vehicles or getting hit by a car out in the roadway.
-
PATIENCE…Honking, yelling, or swearing at people does not make the line move faster and only adds to the frustration for everyone.
-
If you don’t like to wait in line, consider coming a bit later. Five minutes makes quite a bit of difference. School starts at 8:45 and dismissal is at 3:45. If you come too early, you will need to wait in line longer.
-
If you are picking up or dropping off at Cook Street, enter the line from NORTH STREET Do not try to cut into the line at Dodge Street. Others have been waiting in line and do not appreciate your cutting into the line ahead of them.
-
Also, if dropping off on Cook Street, please DO NOT turn into the back alley driveway and drop your child off. It blocks the sidewalk and causes unsafe conditions for those families who are walking their children to the door and need to cross the driveway areas. It might seem more convenient for you, but it is not safe for others.
-
DO NOT park in the alley while waiting for your child. The alley behind Central-Denison is a public thoroughfare.
-
If you are picking up or dropping off on Madison Street, please approach the line from the south (closest to the lake). Madison Street is quite narrow and it is not safe to drop your child off on the west side of the road and ask them to cross.
-
Use the crosswalks! – Set an example for our students and be safe, even if it is a few steps out of the way.
We work very hard to make our pick-up and drop-off areas safe for everyone, whether you are a child getting into or out of a car, or a parent trying to pick up or drop off your child. It is not our intention to cause anyone undue stress, that is why we have the plans in place that we do. We know that it is not ideal, but it works…when we work together. If the pick-up and drop-off lines don’t work for your family’s needs, please remember, the bus is always an option or you can contact the office for alternative ideas.
Thank you for your help in keeping our school safe.

Student Attendance and Attendance Procedures
| |
One of the biggest ways you can help your child succeed this school year is to make sure your child gets to school, on time, each and every day. The evidence is clear: children with good attendance are more likely to be successful in school. High attendance rates are linked to high student achievement. Every day counts, and missing school even 10% of the time has a significant negative impact on reading and math achievement as children progress through school. We want to ask for your commitment to making sure your child attends school every day possible this year.
When your child does have to be absent from school, we ask that you communicate with us about the absence. When your child will be absent, you have two communication options:
Call Mrs. Draper in the main office at 262-348-4000 to speak with her and/or leave a message by 9:30 AM each day.
You may login to Powerschool to record the reason for your child’s absence. Please see the directions linked here.
We also ask that you let us know about pre-planned absences, including vacations and doctor appointments, ahead of time. When missing school for an appointment, it is always encouraged that you get documentation of your visit to provide to the school as verification. When leaving for an extended vacation, we also ask that you complete the Planned Absence Request form. This form can be obtained from Mrs. Draper in the office.
Lastly, please also note, as a school, we are required to track student attendance and support families with any attendance issues or concerns. Our highest priority is to have students at school, and we are willing to help in any way we can. As a parent, it is important to understand the current State of Wisconsin attendance laws stated below:
A parent or guardian may only excuse their child/children 10 days during the school year including doctor visits. After these 10 days, an absence can only be excused if the school is provided with a note from a doctor, dentist, court, etc. The same guidelines apply for excessive tardies.
Once a student has been absent for 10 days (excused or unexcused), parents/guardians will receive a letter, noting the absences as well as procedures for next steps to improve attendance
Thank you in advance for your commitment and support to your child’s attendance this school year.

When to Keep Your Child Home from School
School attendance is very important, and we encourage families to make sure their children are in school as much as possible. However, children who are sick need to stay home for their well-being and to prevent others from becoming sick.
