Mr. Owen's Update
It’s been a busy and energetic week at St. Pius X Parish School! From iReady testing to Student Council elections, fire drills, and the kickoff of our afterschool clubs, there's no shortage of activity around here.
We’re pleased to announce that fall iReady testing is now complete! This assessment is crucial for helping us gauge our students’ reading and math levels at the start of the year. It allows us to identify strengths and areas for growth, guiding our lesson planning for the months ahead. The iReady platform also provides students with personalized computer-based activities to sharpen their math and reading skills, so learning never stops!
Election excitement is in the air! Student Council elections will take place this Friday, with candidates eagerly campaigning through posters and speeches. They’ve worked hard on their speeches, which will be delivered during our school-wide assembly next week. Best of luck to all our future student leaders!
This week, we also held our first fire drill of the school year. We’re proud to report that our students safely evacuated and were accounted for in under two minutes and thirty seconds—an amazing job by all! Another fire drill, with the Lombard Fire Department, is scheduled for September 30th.
Last but not least, our Friday assembly was an absolute hit, featuring an exciting demonstration on robotic programming. A computer-controlled robotic dog had students fascinated, courtesy of the STEAM group, which is offering an afterschool program for those interested in diving deeper into the world of robotics.
We’re so proud of our students for their hard work and enthusiasm this week, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

Volley for the Cure
Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to announce that St. Pius X Athletics is preparing for our 10th Annual "Volley for the Cure" event. Mark your calendars for Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28, and join us as the Knights Volleyball Teams take the court in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. If you or your company would like to sponsor this meaningful event, your family name or company logo will be proudly displayed on commemorative event t-shirts. Visit our Volley for the Cure Page for more information on how you can order a tee shirt or become a sponsor. Fight like a night and contribute!
New this year, you will have a chance to purchase raffle tickets and enter for your chance to win our team-made and premium sponsor gift baskets online prior to the event. Access our Give Smart Page Here.
As events start on Friday night (9/27), we are looking for families to come in after school that day and decorate the gym. This is a all hands on deck event, and we want students to come but need adult supervision as well. I would love someone to step up as the leader of the decorating committee. Please sign up on this Sign Up Genius, and indicate if you are willing to be the point person working with me.

Introducing the Knights' Code for Athletics
The St. Pius X Athletic Program has rolled out the Knights' Code, setting clear guidelines to ensure a positive, respectful, and enjoyable experience for everyone involved in our sporting events. The code emphasizes the values we hold dear: respect, responsibility, presence, and preparedness. However, recent trends in student behavior at games suggest that these values are being overlooked, requiring immediate attention.
Behavior Concerns
In the past few weeks, several issues have emerged involving students at sporting events:
- SPX sports equipment has been taken outside during games, leading to safety concerns and distractions from the event.
- Messy areas have been left behind by SPX students, with trash and personal belongings scattered around, which violates the responsibility aspect of the code.
- Students have been observed playing unsupervised in the parking lot and on the playground, posing a safety risk.
A Crucial Reminder to Parents and Students
We want to remind everyone that St. Pius X sporting events are not intended to serve as a babysitting service. It is crucial that students remain engaged in watching the game or be under proper supervision at all times.
Many times, Mr. Romano is the only SPX employee on-site during these events, and his primary role is to serve as the gym monitor. He cannot be responsible for managing students outside the gym or overseeing unsupervised play. This lack of supervision compromises the safety and enjoyment of our events for all.
The Knights Code Must Be Followed
The Knights Code states that students should:
- Be Respectful: Show respect for opponents, guests, and officials, and demonstrate good sportsmanship and kindness.
- Be Responsible: Clean up after yourself and follow all school expectations.
- Be Present: Stay mindful and alert, limiting the use of personal technology.
- Be Prepared: Maintain academic eligibility and adhere to the school's standards.
If these expectations continue to be ignored, more stringent measures will be considered. This could include requiring students to attend games only when accompanied by an adult or even suspension from attending future events.
A Call to Action
We ask parents to remind their students of the importance of adhering to the Knights Code. Our goal is to create an environment where all fans, athletes, and staff can enjoy the excitement of Knights athletics. Let’s work together to ensure our events remain safe, respectful, and in line with the values that define St. Pius X.
The next step is in your hands. Let's support our teams in a positive and constructive way, keeping safety and respect at the forefront of our athletics.
