WHAT THE COACH IS SAYING

“I thought we played well in all three phases of the game last week and had a solid performance on the road against a region opponent. We must continue to improve and play at our best this week in order to give our team a chance against another quality region opponent on the road vs. St Paul’s. This game is important on many levels, but, most importantly, a win will keep our playoff hopes alive.” - McGill-Toolen head coach David Faulkner

WHAT THE MEDIA IS SAYING

“McGill-Toolen travels to St. Paul’s this week for the final game of a six-game road stretch. The Yellow Jackets sit at 2-3 in 6A, Region 1 play, while the Saints are 3-2. St. Paul’s leads the all-time series 3-0. Both teams made playoff appearances last season and remain in the postseason hunt. McGill-Toolen needs to win at least one of its next two games — either this week against St. Paul’s or next week versus Spanish Fort — to stay alive in a potential tiebreaker. The Yellow Jackets carry momentum after back-to-back wins, while the Saints look to bounce back from a 42-10 loss to Saraland. – Emily Cochran, Fox 10

BLANE’S REIGN

Blane Barre was feeling it Friday. The quarterback was a perfect 14 of 14 against Blount for 164 yards and a touchdown to Jack Lenaghan. With the 14 passes against Blount, the senior has now completed 80 passes for 788 yards on the season. Add the 40 rushing yards against the Leopards, Barre now has 1,064 yards of total offense (778 passing and 276 rushing) for the year.

RECEIVING ATTENTION

Barre’s 14 passes went to five different receivers in the Blount game. Jack Lenaghan caught 6 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. James King (3 catches for 28 yards), Kaden Thrash (3 catches for 14 yards), Seth Demouey (2 catches for 21 yards), and Ladarien Miller (1 catches for 15 yards) all grabbed passes in the win. Lenaghan has now hauled in a team-high in catches (26) and yards (280).

SWARMING DEFENSE

The Yellow Jackets defense stifled the Blount offensive attack to the tune of 150 total yards of offense. Blount managed just 86 yards through the air and 64 yards on the ground.

DID YOU KNOW

• Brandon Murillo led the defense with 7 total tackles (6 solo, 1 assist), while Lars Hansen added solo tackles against Blount.

• Lamarien Miller hauled in another interception on Friday against Blount, while Matthew Crawford earned a sack.

• Oregon 5-star commit Anthony “Tank” Jones Jr. has 4 rushing TDs, 2 receiving TDs and a pair of passing scores for St. Paul’s. He has 37 tackles and 7 sacks on defense.

• In games against common opponents, McT is 1-3 and St. Paul’s 2-2. Against Murphy, St. Paul’s won 50-6, while McT blanked the Panthers 50-0. Against Theodore, St. Paul’s lost 42-41 and McGill fell 27-10. Against Saraland, the Saints fell 42-10, while the Jackets lost 43-10. St. Paul’s beat Gulf Shores 27-23, while McGill fell 10-6 to the Dolphins.

• McT is still very much in the playoff race. The Jackets are essentially a game out with three to play, basically battling three other teams for two spots. Gulf Shores and St. Paul’s are 3-2 in the area, while Spanish Fort is 3-3. With a win Friday, McT (2-3) can pull within a three-way tie with the Saints and Toros. The win would give the Jackets the tiebreaker over St. Paul’s and set up a tie-breaking game the following week with Spanish Fort, who has a bye Friday.

• The Saints haven’t been kind to the Jackets in their three previous meetings. St. Paul’s defeated McT 31-3 in ’24, 14-6 in ’23, and 16-3 in ’22, outscoring the Jackets 81-12 in that time.

THE EXTRA POINT

St. Paul head coach Ham Barnett played football at and graduated from McGill-Toolen in 1997 and earned his college education at the University of South Alabama. He also did a stint as an assistant for the Yellow Jackets, in addition to stops at Theodore, Mary G. Montgomery and Thompson.
