Twenty-First Sunday After Pentecost

Sunday Readings
Isaiah 45:1-7
An earthly ruler as the instrument of God’s will
Psalm 96:1-13
Ascribe to the Lord honor and power. (Ps. 96:7)
1 Thessalonians 1:1-10
Thanksgiving for the church at Thessalonica
Matthew 22:15-22
A teaching on giving to the emperor and to God
In today’s first reading God uses the Gentile ruler Cyrus to accomplish divine purposes. When the Pharisees try to trap Jesus, he tells them to give the emperor what belongs to him and to God what belongs to God. To gather for worship reminds us that our ultimate allegiance is to God rather than to any earthly authority. Created in the image of God, we offer our entire selves in the service of God and for the sake of the world.

Faith Circle - Tuesday, October 20th!
Faith Circle meets on the third Tuesday evening of each month at 7 pm in the narthex. All are welcome. We begin the evening with refreshments (coffee and snacks provided by the hostess) and fellowship. The lesson leader presents the Bible study, beginning around approximately 7:30 pm.
This month’s Faith Circle is on Tuesday, October 20th. It is being hosted by Helen Repp, with Kathy Bowersox serving as the lesson leader. We collect an offering each month, which will support the ministries of WELCA (Women of the ELCA) as well as selected local and ELCA charities. We use the Bible study materials from Gather Magazine, a WELCA publication. Plan to attend and bring a friend!

| | A huge "THANK YOU" to everyone who pitched in to help us host the East/Central Conference Day! We did a fabulous job all the way around: the building grounds looked welcoming, the kitchen was a well oiled machine, and of course the technical aspects were flawless! | | |

World Food Day is October 16th!
Your gifts help our church respond to hunger and poverty through hundreds of projects in more than 60 countries around the world, including the United States. These gifts are brought together with the skills, capacity and resources of local communities to make transformative changes.
One out of every 11 people — as many as 720 million — in our world are hungry. As members of the ELCA, we are called to respond. We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. ELCA World Hunger is uniquely positioned to accompany communities in need because we work with congregations in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as other partners and Lutheran churches overseas. From health clinics to microloans, water wells to farm animals, community meals to advocacy, your gifts to ELCA World Hunger make it possible for the ELCA to respond, supporting sustainable solutions that get at the root causes
of hunger and poverty.
