Windows 11 Killing Legacy Print Drivers
Microsoft is officially retiring its long‑standing V3 and V4 printer drivers in Windows 11 – a process that began this past January. It’s a major shift in how the operating system handles printing. This is part of a larger multi‑year deprecation plan which first announced in 2023, aimed at strengthening security and promoting modern, standardized printing frameworks. With the 2026 non‑security updates, Windows Update will stop distributing these older drivers.
For everyday users, the impact will vary. Most modern printers that rely on newer driver architectures that will continue to operate normally, making the change largely invisible for many. The difficulty may come with older hardware, which could experience disruptions if the devices depend on legacy driver models. Printers using V3/V4 drivers may fail to install or stop working unless updated drivers are provided directly by the manufacturer. Ideally, part of the previously mentioned process starting in 2023 has allowed for much of that to be addressed, too.
While this shift may create headaches for some, the long‑term benefits are expected to outweigh the inconvenience; Legacy print drivers have introduced security vulnerabilities and compatibility problems, including high‑profile issues like PrintNightmare. This change should reduce that attack surface, simplify maintenance, and deliver a more stable and secure printing experience. If there’s issues with an older printer, however, the manufacturer may need to provide updated drivers.
