Joy_Anyway_p2.png

This Sunday, we begin a new sermon series, Joy Anyway, with Pastor David's message, Being Fearless. Writing from prison, uncertain of what the future might hold, the Apostle Paul encouraged the Philippians to stand firm in their faith and face opposition with courage. His words invite us to consider how fear can hold us back, and what it means to live with confidence in God's presence and promises, even when life feels uncertain.

Through Scripture, prayer, and music, we'll reflect on the courage that comes from trusting God and the joy we can find even in difficult circumstances.

Sunday's Worship schedule:

  • 8:30am – Traditional Worship (Sanctuary)
  • 9:00am – LightHouse Worship (Casper Holroyd Hall)
  • 11:00am – Traditional Worship (Sanctuary)

Traveling this weekend? Tune in to our livestreams at 9:00 or 11:00am at hbumc.org/live. Missed worship last week? Follow us on YouTube!

You are invited to Hayes Barton's annual Trunk-or-Treat on Wednesday, October 28th! Come dressed in your favorite costume, bring your family and friends, and get ready for a festive night of fall fun, games, treats, and community! You do not need to sign up to come and enjoy the evening. However, if you would like to join us for dinner, we ask that you register ahead of time (signup below). Register by Monday!

Here’s the evening lineup!

  • 6:30–7:30pm: Trunk-or-Treating in the Reid Street Parking Lot

Please note: Parents/guardians must stay with their children at all times throughout the event, including dinner and carnival games. Children should not be walking around CHH unaccompanied. Thank you for making sure this is a safe event for everyone!

We are looking for volunteers to cover each of the carnival game stations. If you have youth in need of service hours or just want to lend a hand and make this event a success, please email Meghan. Thank you for considering!

Clergy Appreciation Month

As we move into fall and enjoy the beautiful colors around us, the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) wants to recognize that October is Clergy Appreciation Month. This recognition was established worldwide in 1992 to honor the contributions of pastoral leaders, making it a special time to share our appreciation for the clergy of Hayes Barton. While it may look like a Sunday job, they are really on-call 24/7 supporting our congregation, offering spiritual and emotional support in times of difficulty, transition, sorrow, and joy.

To Pastors David, Sarah, Matt, Lindsey, and Claire, thank you for what you bring to our church. Your strength, knowledge, compassion, and caring are demonstrated every day. Please join us in sharing your appreciation with these amazing people we get to call our own at Hayes Barton.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 is one of the most familiar Old Testament verses:  To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.

And so it is with our controller, Brooks Wicker. After 5 years in this position at Hayes Barton, Brooks has made the decision to retire by spring of 2027. We sincerely appreciate what Brooks has brought to the position and will celebrate her in the spring.

As of now, church administration and the Staff Parish Relations and Finance committees will begin conversations regarding this position and reviewing the current job description to evaluate adjustments that might be needed. Watch for more information in the coming months, and for now, please join us in wishing Brooks a retirement full of fun and travel!

We're excited to welcome Kimberly Powers as our new part-time Children’s and Youth Ministry Administrator!

After faithfully serving as our Interim Director of Children’s Ministry and helping Meghan Watson transition into her new role, Kimberly will now provide behind-the-scenes administrative support for both our children and youth ministries.

Please join us in congratulating Kimberly and welcoming her into this new position!

2027 Stewardship Update

Thanks to 338 households, we’ve reached $2.08 million in pledges, or 67% of our $3.1 million goal for 2027. We appreciate everyone who has pledged to support Hayes Barton’s ministries.

If you haven’t submitted your pledge, there’s still time. Your commitment helps us plan for the year ahead.

How to pledge

Pledge online anytime at hbumc.org/give, using the QR code in your Order of Worship, or complete a Commitment Card and return it to the church office.

Birds & Bees: Preparing for all those … awkward questions.

Join Raising Parents for a four-week conversation about one of those parenting topics we’ve ignored, successfully dodged or know is coming - but may not feel totally prepared for.

Drawing on content from the Birds & Bees curriculum, we’ll talk about how to have simple, age-appropriate conversations with our kids about bodies, sex, and where babies come from in a way that feels natural, honest, and consistent with our faith and family values. We’ll explore practical language, talk through the questions kids actually ask, and learn how to make these conversations an ongoing part of parenting rather than one big, awkward “talk.” No sign up needed!

Dates: November 4 & 11, 6:30-7:30pm

Leader: Peyton Stokley

Catching Your Breath

Most of us are running on empty heading into the holidays and we know it. November 13 and 14, Edenton Street UMC is hosting a co-ed, intergenerational weekend with professor, author and retreat leader Rev. J. Dana Trent, designed for exactly the season we're in. Childcare is provided, and space is limited.

Front_Desk_Volunteers_Needed_9_x_2.5_in_p2.png

We’re looking for friendly, welcoming volunteers to help greet callers, answer questions, and lend a hand with light office tasks - especially during the lunch hour.

It’s an easy, meaningful way to connect with our church community, support our staff, and make someone’s day a little brighter! Come share your time, your smile, and your spirit of hospitality.

Thank you, Lord for prayer in which you speak through thoughts you form in my mind and impress on my heart. Help me to listen to you intently. May I never become so resistant to what you have to say that you would send a famine of hearing your words. I want to keep the ears of my mind and heart open. Speak Lord, now in the sacred silence of receptive prayer."
