Tinker Field Research Highlight
|
|
Vitor Vilaverde Dias, PhD candidate in Latin American Literatures & Cultures and Graduate Teaching Associate in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese, recently conducted field research in Brazil, with support from a Tinker Field Research Grant awarded by CLAS.
This funding, provided by the Tinker Foundation in support of its mission to promote the development of an equitable, sustainable, and productive society in Latin America, was originally awarded for the editing and post-production of Vitor's documentary film Andor. However, the COVID-19 pandemic required that Vitor adjust, using the funds to conduct research for his dissertation project entitled "The Underdeveloped Nostalgia: Archive, Memory, & Subjectivity Educating Plural Imaginaries." (Credit for all photos: Vitor Vilaverde Dias)

Vitor works within the fields of cultural studies and film studies to "develop a map of Brazilian cinematographic history and intersections with other Latin American countries." While in Brazil in May and June 2022, he approached this work through three fronts: (1) studying and discovering visual archives in São Paulo; (2) holding workshops with socially disadvantaged teenage documentary filmmakers at the Querô Institute in Santos; and (3) conducting interviews and shooting documentary footage.

Please join us in congratulating Vitor on his exceptional work and wishing him luck with the final stages of his dissertation!
