When you hear the word philanthropist, you might picture someone who has given away millions of dollars or has a building named in their honor. But philanthropy is not defined by the size of a gift but is defined by the heart behind it.
The word philanthropy comes from the Greek words philos (love) and anthrōpos (humanity). Simply put, philanthropy means a love of humanity expressed through generous action.
Every time you make a gift to Lafayette Urban Ministry, you are practicing philanthropy. Whether your contribution helps provide a warm bed, keeps the lights on for a neighbor in crisis, stocks the food pantry, or offers hope to someone facing difficult circumstances, you are demonstrating a love for your community.
At LUM, we believe philanthropy is not reserved for the wealthy. It belongs to every person who chooses to care for others through generosity. Your gifts, large or small, are changing lives every day. Thank you for being a philanthropist. More importantly, thank you for living out a love of humanity by sharing hope with your neighbors.
