The Message this Week
Preaching Text: Exodus 2:23-25; 3:10-15; 4:10-17
Moses at the burning bush. People lament that God doesn’t get their attention by speaking to them through a burning bush. Let me propose that the kind of call you receive is related to the nature of what you are being asked to do. A burning bush is necessary for Moses to leave his life behind, go back to a place that holds all kinds of difficult memories and the reality that he may not be safe there, being that his last act before leaving was killing an Egyptian. Once he gets there he will convince the Pharaoh to let the Hebrew people go and then to lead them to the promised land. I think that merits a really clear and dramatic sign. Personally, I’m fine not having God speak to me in a burning bush, but I do have to pay attention for signs of God’s work and figure out how to join it.
Holy and mighty God, help us to trust that we are called to serve You and to stay alert for signs of Your work that we can join. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
