Historical Tidbit:
 The Walk-Over Shoe Company
The Walk-Over Shoe Company produced 1.167 million pairs of Army shoes during World War I.

It was founded in 1874 by George Eldon Keith under the name George E. Keith Co. and by 1920, the company opened stores across Europe and the US. In 1899, a store was established in London, and in 1902, a women's shoe line was introduced. The shoes were made in the Campello section of Brockton, Massachusetts, and Middleboro, Massachusetts.

The factory of the Walk-Over Shoe company had numerous peculiar uses. The upper floor was offices and rooms for salesmen to prepare orders, and the "club" catered to entertainment purposes, such as hosting parties, field days, carnivals, open houses, theatre shows, dances, and games such as bowling, billiards, tennis, and squash.

Climate Can Do:
Reduce, Reuse, and Upcycle

One of the many ways that we can help against climate change is to reduce our consumption, reuse pieces that we already have, and upcycle them to make something new. Often we are quick to throw things out that we are no longer using, but why not give things a second life and keep them out of the landfills?

Ways to Reduce, Reuse, and Upcycle
  • Before throwing something away, consider if you or someone else could use it again in the same or different way. Passing things on to friends, selling on marketplaces, or donating them are all ways to give something another life.
  • Avoiding overconsumption is challenging, but being mindful of new purchases curbs the amount of new things being made.
  • Upcycling is taking something old and making it into something new! These projects can be practical, creative and fun!
  • Feel the need to shop? Going thrifting and buying second hand is a fun way to get your shopping fix in and find unusual items, inexpensively.
  • The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of the world’s carbon emissions and consumes 10% of all water used industrially worldwide. (Sustainable Harvest International)
  • Shop close to home and within your community. People often resell or give away things they do not need anymore. It could be just what you are looking for!

The more we reduce our consumption of products, reuse and upcycle, the more we keep out of landfills and we lower production in the first place. This also saves you money while helping to keep the environment safe for us humans.

Grounding: the practice of making oneself grounded: "to be based firmly on something"

When we are grounded, we have a firm understanding of our value as a human being. We know who we are as a person.

Sometimes this is considerably harder than one would hope, and I know I need to actively do things that ground me regularly, especially when faced with emotional challenges.

“It was when I stopped searching for home within others and lifted the foundations of home within myself I found there were no roots more intimate than those between a mind and body that have decided to be whole.” ~ Rupi Kaur

“In the vessel of your body, you yourself are the world tree, deep roots in the Earth and a crown of stars. Your essence bridges dimensions.” ~ Elizabeth Eiler

“Sacred rest is not just about sleeping or taking it easy. It consists of physical, emotional, and spiritual rest. The purpose is to promote a healthier mindset, attitudes, boundaries, relationships, productivity, and wellness as a whole person; body, mind, and spirit.”
~ Dana Arcuri
It is not from others that we find our worth, although the mirror and energy does help when it is positive. No, we have to know ourselves well enough to reach for food to feed our roots; our buried inner core self; and strengthen those roots because some days... the wind blows and the sleet hits our leaves and branches, and we need to be firmly planted to weather the storm. ~ Jacquie
