SCS and COSA Support Delaware County Caregivers

What happens when caring for a loved one becomes more than one person can manage alone?

It’s a reality many caregivers face, often without realizing how much the role has grown until they are already stretched thin.

Recent headlines have underscored just how complex and challenging caregiving can become, particularly when individuals are managing it without the support they need. While these situations are often deeply personal and multifaceted, they serve as an important reminder: caregivers need care, too.

Through a partnership with the County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA), Senior Community Services (SCS) offers a Caregiver Support Program (CSP) designed to uplift and assist those caring for others. The program provides a combination of financial relief, emotional support, and practical education to help caregivers manage the many demands they face.

Eligible Delaware County residents with low to moderate incomes may receive reimbursement for caregiving-related expenses when caring for an older adult (60+), a grandchild under 18, or a disabled relative between the ages of 18 and 59. While reimbursement may not cover every cost, it helps ease financial strain, and opens the door to additional resources.

Participants gain access to caregiver training, assistive technology guidance, support groups, and educational programs focused on topics such as stress management, mental health, and navigating complex family dynamics.

One longtime participant shared:

“The role of a caregiver takes on new meaning as you witness the changes that occur as a loved one ages. With these changes, responsibilities grow and impact every part of your life. The support from COSA helps maintain a new sense of ‘normal’ and eases both the time and financial challenges of caregiving.”

Emotional support is a critical component of caregiving. Research consistently shows that strong social connections help individuals cope with stress. Without that support, caregivers can experience burnout, isolation, and declining mental health - factors that can impact both the caregiver and the person receiving care.

SCS care managers facilitate support groups where caregivers can connect, share experiences, and find encouragement in a safe, understanding environment. These groups, along with educational opportunities, are designed to strengthen resilience and help caregivers feel less alone.

SCS also continues its commitment to caregiver education through the annual Caregiver Academy. The 2026 Caregiver Academy will be held as a one-day, in-person event featuring three expert-led presentations focused on key caregiving topics.

Past participants consistently highlight the value of the program, with one attendee sharing, “This class was excellent!! The best,” while another noted, “Wonderful presenters who were engaging for the group…with many wise tidbits and nuggets of wisdom to try out.” Another simply encouraged, “Keep offering these excellent topics.”

By providing practical tools, emotional support, and financial assistance, SCS and COSA are helping caregivers build resilience, reduce stress, and feel supported in one of life’s most demanding roles.
