Dear CDOC Community,
July is Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness and UV Safety Awareness Month. Early detection and prevention continue to be proven tools to reduce the burden of melanoma in the United States. Risk factors like indoor tanning (which significantly increases lifetime risk of melanoma) pose a significant threat. See below for awareness tools from GW Cancer Center.
This month, CDOC is launching Partner in Focus. Each quarter, CDOC would like to highlight one of our dedicated coalition members to foster connection, collaboration, and inspiration across the CDOC community via the listserv and on the CDOC website. These highlights aim to showcase the unique roles and voices that strengthen our collective work in cancer prevention and control. This month we are highlighting the CDOC Vice-Chair, Bridget Freeley. Read more about Bridget below.
Lastly, thank you for completing the annual 2025 CDOC Member Survey! Responses will help evaluate partnerships, program implementation, and cancer plan progress. Your input is valuable in guiding our efforts, shaping future initiatives, and improving our impact.

CDOC Partner in Focus:
Bridget Freeley
For the first CDOC Partner in Focus, we are pleased to highlight CDOC Vice Chair Bridget Freeley! Get to know more about Bridget by reading below.
| | | | |
"It is an honor to be this month’s CDOC Partner in Focus. My name is Bridget Freeley, and I serve as the Vice Chair of CDOC and Associate Director of State Partnerships at the American Cancer Society. In this role, I work closely with state-level partners across California, including cancer coalitions and health plans, on efforts that span the entire cancer continuum. My work focuses mostly on cancer prevention and early detection, with an emphasis on HPV vaccination, as well as colorectal and lung cancer screening. I am a member of both the California HPV Vaccination Roundtable’s Parent Workgroup and the CDOC/ACS Lung Cancer Screening Workgroup, where I help lead the development of the California Lung Cancer Story Map.
I’ve spent most of my career in public health, with experience in quality improvement and cardiology. I joined the American Cancer Society in 2021.
This work is personal to me. My mom is a breast cancer and three-time ovarian cancer survivor. Growing up watching her battle this disease has been my driving force in my work to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
I grew up in the Boston area and now live in Santa Monica with my partner, William, and our rescue dog, Squiggy. In my free time, I enjoy writing, running, surfing, and spending time at the beach and going on road trips with my little family."

California HPV Vaccine Week is coming up on August 3–9, 2025! This is an annual observance held the first full week of August. The goal of this campaign is to increase awareness of the HPV vaccine and promote the vaccination of kids ages 9–12. California HPV Vaccine Week is a great way for families, providers, coalitions supporting children’s health, and local health departments to get out the message about the importance of the HPV vaccine as cancer prevention.
How You Can Help:

Check out our website: CA HPV Vaccine Week | Roundtable
- The 2025 campaign toolkit and social media assets are coming soon!
- Plan to share content via social media, newsletters, and events

2021-2025 State Cancer Plan Corner
July 2025 Cancer Plan Corner Highlight
Chapter 8: Early Detection and Screening
Melanoma
As temperatures rise across the country, it is important to remember to take care of yourself and your skin. In 2018, the latest year for which incidence data is available, 83,996 cases of melanoma were reported and 8,199 people died of this cancer in the United States alone (U.S. Cancer Statistics Working Group, 2021). For every 100,000 people, 22 new melanoma cases were reported and two people died of this cancer (U.S. Cancer Statistics Working Group, 2021). Melanoma accounts for the vast majority of skin cancer deaths (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2021).Read more here.
Please visit our website to read more on the cancer plan's Melanoma objectives. You may also access the specific chapter here.

Request for Proposals:
2025 Community Grants Program
To Promote Health Equity
The UCLA Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Equity, in collaboration with the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and Doctora Monica Salinas, invite the submission of proposals for projects to promote health equity by addressing health disparities among underserved populations in and around Los Angeles County. While proposals may request up to the full $5,000, we ask that applicants request only the amount necessary to carry out the proposed project.
This year, we are accepting applications for projects aimed to increase health equity in local communities. We intend to fund projects that promise to improve health among underserved population groups.
Projects may include, but are not limited to: needs assessment, direct services to community members, development or adaptation of educational materials, implementation of community educational programs, promotion of health screenings, assistance addressing social needs, increasing access to health programs, and program evaluation

| | American Cancer Society Introduces CancerRisk360 | | |
To help improve cancer prevention and risk reduction, the American Cancer Society developed ACS CancerRisk360. This interactive online tool provides individuals a personalized, comprehensive assessment of cancer risk along with resources to empower and enable them to help reduce their risk of cancer through healthy lifestyles, regular cancer screening, and genetic counseling and testing direction.
CancerRisk360 provides individuals with an accessible, easy first step to prevent and detect cancer by offering a better understanding of several factors that impact a person’s individual risk. Through the free 5-10-minute CancerRisk360 assessment, individuals answer questions in four key areas:
- Genetic and hereditary markers
- Family history of cancer
- Adherence to evidence-based cancer screening guidelines
- Daily life factors, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, diet, physical activity, and body weight
Visit acscancerrisk360.cancer.org to take the assessment and learn more about what you can change to improve your health and lower your cancer risk today! Please share with your networks.
