Youth who feel connected to a positive peer group and supportive adults are significantly more likely to graduate high school and avoid risky behaviors. Across 11 sites in Lake County, Boys & Girls Club of Lake County creates that connection every day - providing consistent mentors, structured programs, and a true sense of belonging that helps young people thrive, stay on track, and discover their potential.

Celebrating Black History Month!

The Boys & Girls Club of Lake County welcomed more than 370 community members to its Black History Month celebration, featuring youth from six of our 11 sites. Club members performed a range of songs, spoken word pieces, and dance routines that highlighted Black history and culture. After the program, families stayed for dinner, which included brisket, mac and cheese, salad, and cupcakes.

Events like this showcase the impact of BGCLC across Lake County. By providing consistent opportunities for youth to learn, perform, and express themselves, BGCLC helps young people develop confidence, leadership, and a sense of belonging - preparing them to excel both in and outside the Club.

How Volunteers Empower Lake County Youth

Volunteers play a vital role at Boys & Girls Club of Lake County. Across our 11 sites, they expand opportunities for our youth - sharing skills, building confidence, and forming meaningful relationships that help youth unlock new strengths and expand their horizons.

One inspiring example is Loop Connections (the BGCLC Sewing Club), where students learn fiber arts while creating unique pieces. As the volunteer shared: “It's been wonderful to see how much the students have enjoyed the fiber arts programming provided and how their skills developed over time. Also, the joy the students have at being able to give their creation to a loved one was heartwarming. Several students let us know that they receive a lot through the BGCLC program and they liked being the one doing the giving.”

Moments like these show the true impact of volunteers - empowering youth not just to receive support, but to give back with confidence and heart. We are grateful for every volunteer who helps make BGCLC stronger.

Celebrating Leadership: BGCLC Youth of the Month

At Boys & Girls Club of Lake County, we believe every child has the potential to lead. That’s why we’re proud to recognize our Youth of the Month, a program designed to highlight the leadership abilities of our Club members and help them discover their own strengths.

Each month, Club staff select members who demonstrate leadership in everyday actions - whether it’s helping a peer, showing initiative in a Club activity, or stepping up to support their community. Through these experiences, youth not only gain recognition, but also develop confidence, communication skills, and the ability to guide and inspire others.

Congrats to our January Youth of the Month!*

*We recognize all Youth of the Month recipients, though not all are shown in these photos.

Black History Month at BGCLC Grows Each Year!

At Boys & Girls Club of Lake County, Black History Month is an opportunity for youth to learn, lead, and share their voices.

This year’s celebration was our largest and most intricate yet, led by Miss Helen and BGCLC Operations Manager, Jaylene. Miss Helen has been organizing programs like this for more than 30 years, and in three years at BGCLC, the event has grown significantly - from three girls at our L10 site in year one, to a larger L10 and Genesee group last year, to a multi-site production this year.

This growth reflects the power of intentional programming that helps youth build confidence, leadership skills, and a deeper understanding of history.

Watch the video on the right to hear directly from Miss Helen about the evolution of this event and what it means for our youth.
