Coaches, in other groundbreaking news...Dave Johnson, our National High School Baseball Coaches Association Historian, has just updated the comprehensive history of the MLB draft, which now includes 26,595 players drafted directly from high schools. This is a comprehensive document that is a testament to Dave Johnson's passion and dedication to high school baseball.

• In 2025, 615 players were selected in this year's MLB draft, 123 were from high schools (7 non U.S.), 491 from colleges (1 non-U.S.), and one was not from a school.

• Since the draft was limited to 20 rounds in 2021, the percentage of high school players selected has been about 18% with this year being 19%.

• The high school players selected were from 29 different states, with California (20), Georgia (13), Florida (11), Illinois (7), and North Carolina (7) leading the way. For the 28th time in the 61 years of the draft, a high school player (Eli Willits of Fort Cobb-Broxton High School, OK) was the first overall selection.

• Three high schools had multiple players drafted: four from Corona (CA), and two each from Purvis (MS) and Trinity Christian (GA).

• Incredibly, having four players selected from a high school in a single draft has happened 73 times. Six players from one school have happened 5 times, and five players 7 times.

• 68 of the players drafted from colleges had previously been on one of our NHSBCA All-Region teams, including four of the first 10 college players selected. Overall, the first 7 of 10 picks in the draft were once on one of our NHSBCA All-Region teams.
