Halifax Council on Aging Celebrates Love!

"The power of love from one town to another. We had surprises on St. Valentine's Day! Pre-School Co-Teachers, Julia Anderson and Carol Moliere of St. Bridget's School shared Valentine Cards made with love by their 3-year-old class - thank you!

District Attorney Tim Cruz took time to join The Singing Seniors, and a group picture showed how we joined together for a day of love and spirit. Kudos to Halifax Ageless Wonders!"

Halifax's Blacksmith Shop

This is one of the last truly original blacksmith shops left. It belonged to J.B. Baker and was started in 1875. All his original farrier and blacksmith tools are there, including a brick forge. Most blacksmiths abandoned brick for the steel tray forges that came out in the 1900’s.

The blacksmith was the center of the working farm world at this time. Horses were cared for by the smith; he did farrier work, built wagon wheels, and repaired wagons of that day. In the shop are hundreds of horseshoes, several wagons, and his tools, as simple as they were. It was a time when America built itself from the knowledge and tools from other countries. Halifax's Blacksmith Shop is truly an authentic display of a fundamental early craft…a treasure to be enjoyed and taken care of.

Climate Can-Do: Help Generate Less Winter Waste!

After the white snow engulfs much of the green around us, there are still ways to have a positive impact on the environment. Here are some precautions you can take to waste less and emit less pollution this winter season:

  • Bring a reusable mug: reduce plastic waste by checking out which local coffee shops will fill your clean, personal mug. Some shops even offer small bring-your-own-cup discounts.

  • Reduce your use of chemical deicers like salt: Salt may melt away ice on roads, but it also introduces harmful chemicals into bodies of water, including sources of drinking water. Try mixing a smaller amount of salt with sand to help to increase friction.

  • Turn your thermostat down a few degrees: Waste less energy and save on your power bill. Chilly? Keep an extra layer of clothes handy and keep your blinds and curtains open during the day to let sunlight warm your home. If your home feels drafty, arrange a free home energy assessment from Mass Save. (We all contribute to this fund in our electric bill.)

Stay warm this winter and look for small ways you can have a positive impact on our environment!
