| | American Airlines Adds New Flights at Capital Airport | | |
Beginning October 7, Springfield-area travelers will enjoy a more convenient flight schedule as American Airlines reinstates its early morning departure from Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (SPI).
This enhanced schedule provides passengers earlier access to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), making it easier to connect to over 150 destinations across the U.S. and worldwide.
American Airlines is also upgrading this route with a 65-seat Embraer 170 jet, a 30% increase in capacity compared to the previous 50-seat aircraft. This larger jet also gives travelers the option of a premium cabin experience.
Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport was named Primary Airport of the Year by IDOT in 2020. A 2021 Economic Impact Study found the airport generates $370.8 million annually and supports 2,630 jobs. Major tenants include the Illinois Air National Guard’s 183rd Wing, StandardAero, IDOT’s Division of Aeronautics, LLCC’s Aviation Maintenance Training Center, and Stellar Aviation. Travelers benefit from the Passenger Service Center, Sky Club, and convenient flights with American Airlines to Chicago O’Hare, Allegiant to Punta Gorda, FL, and Breeze Airways to Orlando.
New Flight Schedule (Effective October 7)

Frank J. Vala, Chair of the Springfield Airport Authority Board of Commissioners, shared:
“We are thrilled that American Airlines has brought back the popular early morning departure! The new flight schedule and larger aircraft will enhance the passenger experience and provide greater opportunities for local business, governmental, and leisure travel.”

Have you noticed your street getting a fresh, dark coat that makes it look brand new but it's not an asphalt overlay? That’s microsurfacing—an eco-friendly roadway treatment designed to protect and rejuvenate pavement before it deteriorates. Think of it as preservation rather than rehabilitation; it smooths rough spots, seals cracks, and helps the pavement last longer.
Why It Matters:
Microsurfacing offers several key benefits. By sealing cracks and refreshing the surface with hot-mix asphalt, it can extend the life of a road by seven to ten years. While reconstructing an entire road surface can cost around $500,000 per mile, microsurfacing treatments are a fraction of that cost, saving taxpayer money over time. The process also improves safety by restoring traction on worn pavements and causes minimal disruption for drivers, as roads are typically ready for traffic within a few hours.
What to Expect:
Expect the street to be closed for most of the day while crews work. After the application, the surface needs time to "cure," which typically takes about one hour, but may extend up to four hours depending on the weather. During this curing period, it’s crucial to avoid walking on the material, which initially appears brown and tacky before turning black as it hardens.
In preparation for the work, vehicles, trash cans, and other personal items should be removed from the street, and sprinklers will be turned off on paving day. Fresh pavement may display temporary marks if cars turn sharply on it, but these imperfections will fade as traffic and weather smooth the surface. Initially, the streets may look rough, but within a few weeks, they will settle into a durable, long-lasting finish.

| | Cannabis Home Improvement Assistance Awarded | | |
Helen Townsend of Springfield was one of the first homeowners to receive funding from the City of Springfield's Cannabis Homeowner Assistance program. She lives on the corner lot of her block and is looking forward to improvements to her home for new siding and windows. She is hoping neighbors seek support and information on possible assistance programs too so she can start a ripple effect of neighborhood pride. This special grant program is administered by the City's Office of Planning and Economic Development and is made possible by a portion of the local cannabis sales tax levied.
Helen is one of eight homeowners selected to receive funding in this round of cannabis-related grants. Each applicant can be awarded up to $25,000. The funds can be used for a variety of exterior home repairs, including siding, painting, tuckpointing, masonry, roofing, windows, porches, exterior stairs, and accessibility improvements such as ADA-compliant ramps.
Beyond homeowner assistance, a business assistance program is also offered. The homeowner and business assistance program application periods are planned to reopen in February of 2026 and close March 31st, 2026.
