September 2026 Edition

May the dawning of September bring you a fresh look at all that is good and beautiful in your life. We begin to transition into Autumn during this month. How are you being invited to transition into a deeper, fuller version of the person God has called you to be? May you be open to God's invitation to the 'more' of life and respond wholeheartedly.

Prayer for September

Lord, as we step into September,

grant us the courage to embrace the new and

let go of past mistakes.

May we look forward with hope and faith.

Grant us renewed strength and perseverance as

we strive to overcome any obastacles

with grace and determination

and give ourselves to what is new every morning

from God's goodness. Amen.

Liturgical Feasts of September

Some September feasts for our reflection -

  • September 14 and 15 - Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Our Lady of Sorrows - With these feasts, we are again directed to focus on the Paschal Mystery and the saving action of Jesus in our lives along with the ways that Mary shared in her son's mission of bringing the love of God to us.

  • September 8 and 12 are two more feasts of Mary - the Nativity of Mary and the Holy Name of Mary - May we continue to call on Mary to bring us to Jesus and live a faith like hers.

  • On September 9, we celebrate St. Peter Claver. He became a Jesuit and went to Cartagena to minister to persons arriving on the slave ships. He provided physical and spiritual help to those experiencing enslavement. Peter tried to comfort them in whatever way possible. He said of himself, "I am a slave to the slaves forever." May we be reminded and pray for those who experience enslavement today.

  • We celebrate St. Vincent de Paul on the 27th, who was a person of service to the poor and founded the Congregation of the Mission, also known as the Vincentians, and with St. Louise de Marrilac founded the Daughters of Charity, a religious community to look after the needs of our brothers and sisters experiencing poverty. We also celebrate Blessed Frederic Ozanam on the 7th, who was a student in Paris and talked openly about his faith. When ridiculed by a professor for just talking about his faith, it gave Frederic pause to consider what more he needed to do. Along with fellow students, he began to go out into the streets of Paris and help those most in need. From that sprang the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

May those holy men and women whom we celebrate this month give us the example and inspiration to follow Jesus more closely and live his love into the world each day.

Ignatian Spirituality

St. Ignatius of Loyola in his quest for God developed a way of praying that helped him and his Jesuit companions to encounter God in the everyday, the here and now, the sacred moments of engagement. Through the past five centuries, many people have come to know the way of Ignatius, which has brought them to deeper intimacy with God. To delve more deeply into this way of prayer and understand more fully, consider listening to "The Ignatian Way" video presentations. May your journey into the heart of God enliven your life.

World Day of Prayer for the Care for Creation

September 1 is the beginning of the month of Care for Creation, which lasts until the feast of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4. We hope you will take time to join in prayer during this month that we reverence and care for God's great gifts to us and take some positive actions of care.

September Observances

Patriot Day - Let's not lose sight of Patriot Day, September 11, when so many first responders lost their lives while trying to assist those in the World Trade Center towers that had been attacked twenty-five years ago. May we each respond with generosity, love and self-sacrifice when others are in need.

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day are on September 17 commenorating the September 17, 1787 signing of the US Constitution. May we take our responsibility seriously to uphold the Constitution by being outstanding citizens of this country.

International Day of Peace - September 21 marks the date for special recognition for our desire for peace in our world with a 24-hour cease fire and nonviolence. May each of us be centers of peace that send out ripples of peace to all whom we encounter.
