Curated by Mashonda Tifrere, the exhibition is framed conceptually through Ringgold’s relationship to UC San Diego, where she served as professor of visual arts from 1984 to 2002. This institutional affiliation provides a lens for understanding how her academic philosophy materialized throughout her practice and impacted not only those she mentored at UC San Diego, but generations of artists around the world.

Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY
The Whitney Museum of American Art launches The Thinking Ocean a digital art project by Memo Akten and Katie Hofstadter commissioned for artport, the Museum’s online gallery space for Internet art. Part of the artists’ Cosmosapience series, this project simulates a natural body of water that shifts between fluid dynamics and computational code. With The Thinking Ocean, Akten and Hofstadter explore the ways society grants agency to machines that mimic humanlike behavioral patterns, while overlooking the complex computations that similarly unfold in nature.

To help make sense of what the exhibition materials call ‘a changing world shaped by unfettered mediation, environmental degradation and economic precarity’, they’ve designed a suit of cat-themed tarot cards. Like all of My Barbarian’s pastiches, their take on tarot – using stylised prints, a campy performance video and a minimalist costume stand – exaggerates the tendencies of a preexisting cultural form.

The ADORNO group exhibition revisits the enduring question of artistic autonomy in an era saturated by images, circulation, and online spectacle. Drawing its title from the critical legacy of Theodor Adorno, the exhibition stages a contemporary inquiry into art that resists easy consumption—works that operate according to their own internal logics, slow down immediacy, demand presence and emphasize experimentation.

Titled after a 1949 drawing by Toyen and framed by his monograph Royal Book Lodge (Berlin: Hatje Cantz, 2023), Welchman draws on Raoul Vaneigem’s tart critique of Surrealism set out in Histoire désinvolte du surrealism (A Cavalier History of Surrealism,1977) to discuss how Bourgoin, Susin and their RBL friends and colleagues worked through an epistemological and aesthetic inquiry that developed a salient dispute with the historical deployment of alchemical metaphoricity.

The title of the exhibition borrows a description of Arlene Mejorado’s practice as “an act of care, via a tender excavation of objects, anecdotes, and memories simultaneously.” A Tender Excavation centers identities that have been systematically excluded from mainstream narratives and representations of not only American art but of representing an “American” identity.
