Youth Sunday Prayer of the Day

by Logan Lanier | February 16, 2025

Dear God, sometimes we wander, unsure of where we belong. Sometimes we forget who we are—who you made us to be. But you are always searching, always calling, always bringing us home. In this time together, open our hearts to your voice, to the love that never lets us go. May we rest in the truth that no matter how lost we feel, we are always found in you. Amen.

2024 Annual Report

At our Congregational Meeting last Sunday, the 2024 Annual Report was distributed. Click here to view and learn about the work of our Session committees over the last year. Hard copies are available at the entrances to the Sanctuary.

Elder Nominations Open

During Sunday’s Congregational Meeting, one of our items of business was to receive, as information, the 2025 Nominating Committee formed by the Leadership Development Committee of the Session. The Nominating Committee members are: Libbie Reiss (chair), Maureen Herring, Emma Pegues, Sally Wimberly, Nell Lanier, Paul Curry, Pierce Young, and (inadvertently left off) Jessie Bruggers. The committee has begun their work of discerning leaders to serve on the session in the Elder Class of 2028. These are three-year terms. To learn more and to nominate someone, please visit scapc.org/nomination or contact Libbie Reiss at libbiereiss@yahoo.com. Self-nominations are welcome.

Know a Youth Group Looking for a Summer Mission Trip?

This summer, SCAPC will host Camp RHINO, a rebuilding camp that SCAPC has run since 2012. With around 100 youth and chaperones joining us over four weeks in June and July, we anticipate no shortage of volunteers ready to get their hands dirty!

During the day, groups will work with eight of our community partners to participate in a variety of services in the greater New Orleans area. At night after we eat dinner, our Associate Pastor will lead worship activities including scripture reading, simulations, songs, prayer stations, and group discussions. To learn more about Camp RHINO, visit rhinonola.org or contact us at rhino@scapc.org.

Single Service on March 2

Please note that owing to parade traffic on Sunday, March 2, we will have a single worship service at 8:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Sunday School will not meet and children will be asked to remain in service as childcare will not be available.

STAIR Seeking Communications & Program Coordinator

STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading), a one-on-one literacy tutoring program housed in SCAPC's Land Building, is seeking to hire a full-time coordinator to manage all incoming and outgoing communications for STAIR. This includes creating and managing social media content, communicating with tutors, parents and partners, and organizing inventory and volunteers. We are looking for someone organized with a dash of creativity and a love of literacy! The job description can be found on LinkedIn. If interested, please send a cover letter and resume to jennie@stairnola.org.

Youth Sunday

Last Sunday, over 50 youth (6th-12th graders) led all aspects of the 8:30 and 10:30 worship services in a variety of roles including preaching, composing prayers, choosing liturgy and hymns, reading, ushering, drawing, leading the children's message, serving communion, and playing music! Click here to view the service on our YouTube page.

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

February 16 - May 18 | Land Building Riverside Room

In its tone, structure, and portrayal of Jesus, the Gospel of John differs greatly from the other three gospels. It lacks the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord’s Prayer, and any parables. John’s story of Jesus is theologically complex, interweaving themes of light and darkness. He presents Jesus as originating “from heaven,” making him more divine than he appears in the other gospels. Underscoring the conflict between those who accepted Jesus as Messiah and those who did not, this gospel has raised intense dilemmas regarding Christianity’s view of Judaism. This Sunday's topic is "Testimony Concerning the Word", led by Larry Hamric.

HALF TRUTHS: "GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES"...AND OTHER THINGS THE BIBLE DOESN'T SAY

Sundays, February 2 – 23 | Phifer Library

They are simple phrases. They sound Christian--like something you might find in the Bible. We will compare some common Christian clichés with the wisdom found in scripture. The clichés include "Everything happens for a reason"; "God helps those who help themselves"; and others.

Please note the "Individual in the Institution" class will not meet the next two Sundays and will resume on March 9.

Sympathy

Our sympathy is extended to Beth Wren on the passing of her mother, Joan Smith Davis, who died on February 4th in Baton Rouge.
