PRETEND TO BE A TIME TRAVELER DAY
Pretend to Be a Time Traveler Day on December 8th encourages us to step from our Tardis or flip open our Omni while wearing clothes from the past. At the same time, we should act appropriately confused by certain technology.
Time travel has captured our imaginations for generations. Science and authors keep coming back to the topic again and again, so it should be no surprise there would be a day to pretend to be a time traveler. The original blog post that got the day rolling can be found here. For more resources on how to be a time travel or at least act like one, we can explore the wide array of television and movies produced over the decades.
For example, the original Doctor Who produced 26 seasons. Some might say that might be plenty of resource material right there. Let's not stop, though. We've made a list and some of them might surprise you.

Police Community Advisory Boards are volunteer, independent, police district-based, citizen led advisory groups that communicate and engage with their police district community at large to provide at least four quarterly PCAB/community meetings. keelhaul
/kēl-hôl/
Definition: To punish someone severely, especially by dragging them under the keel of a ship as a form of maritime discipline.
Origin: The term originates from the practice in naval warfare during the 17th century, where sailors would be tied and dragged under the ship’s keel as a punishment for various offenses.
Example: After the crew mutinied, the captain threatened to keelhaul anyone who refused to follow orders.
The phrase "punish severely" encapsulates the essence of the term "keelhaul." Historically, keelhauling was an extreme form of punishment used by sailors, signifying a brutal discipline method intended to instill fear and maintain order on a ship. The act involved dragging a sailor underwater, which not only caused physical harm but also served as a stark warning to others. This severe punishment reflects the harsh realities of life at sea during earlier centuries, where maintaining strict discipline was often deemed necessary for survival and effective operation of the crew.

Please note: There will be only one celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the 8th. The 8 am and 5 pm services will resume on the 15th.
Giving With Gratitude Picnic
Immediately following the 10 am service on December 8th, the Stewardship team has planned an amazing church-wide picnic. We hope all parishioners, visitors, and guests will join us for our "Giving With Gratitude" lunch as we celebrate the Bishop's visitation and give thanks to all parishioners for supporting our 2025 stewardship campaign.
Advent Evensong
Also on December 8th, make plans to attend Evensong at 5 pm in the Church. This is a beautiful service of song and prayer. The Jump Hounds
The Jump Hounds is a New Orleans-based sextet that specializes in ‘jump’, the jazz-based rhythm and blues that bridged the gap between swing and rock & roll. To keep this often-overlooked style of music alive, the band plays a mix of Jump Era classics and original compositions within the idiom. The result is a repertoire that balances energetic up-tempo numbers, slow blues, and cozy mid-tempo swingers. This breadth of material makes for dynamic live shows that are tailored to the audience.

The Marigny Opera Ballet presents a premiere of original song & dance for two wintry weekends – an uplifting & joyful journey through art!
HERE presents movement and musical collaboration exploring our journey through time—honoring the past, embracing the present, and looking toward a hopeful future. With uplifting choreography by Christian Denice and Diogo De Lima, as well as live music by Ted Joyner, these performances aim to inspire with a sense of hope and positive momentum.
HERE is an immersive exploration of time and place, centered around the history and present-day significance of the Marigny Opera House, originally built in 1847 as Holy Trinity Catholic Church by New Orleans’ German immigrant community. With choreography by internationally acclaimed choreographer Christian Denice and Artistic Director Diogo de Lima, this program of two contemporary ballets reflects on the passage of time, the power of presence, and the historical narratives embedded in the Marigny Opera House, and the Marigny Opera Ballet achieves yet a higher level of artistic and technical achievement.
This program fuses classical and contemporary elements to bring the past into conversation with the present. Music for HERE is composed by Ted Joyner (of Generationals) and performed live by The Delachaise Ensemble (featuring string quartet, bassoon, and piano). Jeff Pagano collaborates on orchestration and arrangement, while Brian Danos – composer, producer, and electronic experimentalist – will assist with both arrangement and performance, utilizing sequencers, samplers, and analog synthesizers to enhance the score.
Soon, we present programming that celebrates connection and life’s beautiful moments.

NATIONAL BROWNIE DAY
Each year on December 8th, brownie lovers across the nation enjoy one of their favorite baked goods on National Brownie Day.
In the United States, the chocolate brownie is a favorite, with the blonde brownie running a close second. A blonde brownie is made with brown sugar and no chocolate and is often called a blondie.
The earliest recipes for brownies we are familiar with today are found published in regional cookbooks and newspapers around the turn of the last century. The 1904 Laconia, NH Home Cookery, the 1904 Chicago, IL Service Club Cook Book, and an April 2, 1905, edition of The Boston Globe are three early examples. In 1906, Fannie Merritt Farmer published a recipe in an edition of The Boston Cooking School Cook Book.
Three myths have gained popularity over the years regarding the creation of the brownie:
- In an accidental mixing of ingredients, a chef added melted chocolate to biscuit dough.
- A forgetful cook left out the flour when mixing the batter.
- When a housewife did not have baking powder, she improvised to create this new treat. The wife decided to serve her guest flattened cakes.

Have you ever been in a “situationship”? 10 new slang terms explained
Published on December 8, 2024
Credit: The Chaffins
We know it's hard to keep up with the trends all the time. On the streets and in the media, new music, dance moves, hair and clothing styles, apps, or even new flavors are constantly emerging. But also new words! Gen Z people have found original and clever ways to name all kinds of everyday things and situations. If you want to stay up to date with the latest slang, don't miss this article with 10 today's terms and expressions!
1Era
Credit: Kevin laminto
What we used to call just a "phase" has taken on a more epic tone and is now called an "era." This slang term describes a period marked by certain behaviors or characteristics that define a person's current situation.
If you are trying to see the world with different eyes and find the bright side in every situation, let's say you are in your "positive era." Do you have a friend who got tired of being told what to do and now speaks her mind without fear? Well, it's clear she has entered her "villain era." And what about that cousin who got his first job recently? Today's teens would say he's in his "independent era." And so we could go on all day. What would you say is your current era?
2Extra
Credit: Zachary Kadolph
This term first appeared in the 2000s, but it has successfully re-emerged in recent years, especially on social media.
Have you ever seen someone desperately crying because they dropped a piece of toast? Remember that colleague who wore an overly formal suit to a casual barbecue? Well, you could say they were being "extra."
"Extra" is a slang word used to describe people, behaviors, or situations that are excessive or overdramatic. You know, anything that's just too much. Does anyone come to mind right now?
3Bussin'
Credit: Ambitious Studio* | Rick Barrett
When someone takes a bite, and you hear "mmm," it can only mean one thing: the food is delicious. But now there's a new word to express your approval when tasting a dish: "Bussin'!"
If you buy some snacks for your nephew and he says, "Yeah, bussin'!" Congratulations, you've made the right choice. "Bussin'" is used to describe anything considered excellent or well done, especially when it's about food and drink.
Next time you want to recommend a restaurant, you can say their desserts are bussin'!
4Rent free
Credit: Helena Lopes
We've all been in love. Especially when we're young, the idea of that elusive crush is always in our thoughts. In other cases, it's not love but worries that occupy our minds all day long. There are also moments when we can't stop thinking about a book or series we want to return to when we get home.
There is an expression to refer to all those thoughts: they are said to be living "rent-free" in our minds. This witty expression implies that these recurrent ideas emerge without the need for any external stimulus, reason, or effort, and they will probably stay there.
5Slay
Credit: Drahomír Hugo Posteby-Mach
When your outfit, attitude, words, or anything you do goes well and impresses others, you may hear "Slay!"
While confusing at first, this is a slang term for showing approval. When this word appears, it means someone is doing a great job or "killin' it." You've probably read it in the comments under a photo of celebrities "slaying" on a red carpet, or maybe under a video with many likes. Even famous people have adopted the word, helping it become more popular.
Next time you like what you see or hear, you know what expression to use to compliment the person in front of you.
6Ick
Credit: Volodymyr Hryshchenko
We already have the term to show approval; now it's time for a word that expresses the opposite.
New generations have this term for when something unexpected or unacceptable happens. If someone suddenly changes their attitude toward you and starts being rude, if someone uses a weird word at work, or if that person you've been dating says something a little embarrassing or even offensive, the word you're looking for to describe how you feel is "ick." When something makes you uncomfortable or disgusts you, it's said it "gave you the ick."
Fun fact: The word was added to the dictionary in 2024!
7Main character
Credit: Daniel Wirtz
There are people who know how to stand out wherever they go. Whether it's their style, their way of speaking, the confidence they show, or their talent to make great decisions, today's slang has an expression for these people: they are the "main characters."
Have you ever felt that powerful emotion after finally setting boundaries and deciding for yourself? You know those days when you wake up in a great mood and feel extremely confident? Well, in those moments, you are definitely the main character.
8Iykyk
Credit: saeed karimi
Do you recognize that anecdote, song, joke, or expression that only you and your best friend understand and share? While it sounds like a word in some foreign language, "Iykyk" stands for "if you know, you know." This written expression is used as a kind of warning or disclaimer: only a privileged few will understand the information, which is presented in code or as an inside joke.
This term appeared on social media around 2010, and since then, it has become more and more popular. Have you ever read it before?
9Vibe
Credit: Afif Ramdhasuma
The word "vibe" is one of the most used terms by young people in their daily conversations as well as in their online chats, and it's used to describe the mood or the energy emanating from a person or even an entire place.
It's all about emotions and sensations. You know that colleague who's always complaining or that person who has a special talent to bring everyone's mood down? Well, you can confidently say they "don't pass the vibe check."
If, on the other hand, someone immediately connects with you or makes you feel great, we would say that they have "good vibes" or they "passed the vibe check."
10Situationship
Credit: Clay Banks
You're starting to see someone you really like, and it's been several months of dating and romantic messages. You're on a date night with him or her, and you suddenly see a friend of yours at the same bar. So, the question comes: "Is he/she your boyfriend/girlfriend?" Uncomfortable!
Some connections are difficult to define. But there is a new way to express that: If it is too risky to say that you are in a relationship, you can say you're in a "situationship."
What used to be defined by Facebook's "it's complicated" status can now be described with this new slang term that's perfect for when it's not a formal relationship but also more than just a friendship.

Winner, Winner – Chicken Dinner
The corner of South Carrollton Avenue and Earhart Boulevard has long been associated with fried chicken. However, the genesis really begins a bit farther up the street at South Carrollton near Washington Avenue. This unattributed photograph from the early 1950s shows the signs for “Jim’s – Famous for Fried Chicken” and also for “Delicate Jerry’s” at the center of the image.
Growing up in New Orleans, before there was Popeye's there was Jim's Famous Fried Chicken on the corner of South Carrollton Avenue and Earhart Boulevard. The Larocca brothers, Vic and Peter, moved from their original location near Palmetto/Washington and South Carrollton (seen in the photograph below) during the construction of the Pontchartrain Expressway. They operated 24-hours a day with everything cooked to order. Despite a loyal following, the brothers closed the restaurant at the end of 1978 due to stiff competition from fast food chains. Ironically, a Popeye's sits on the site of the former Jim's and even adopted their slogan "Famous Fried Chicken."
Established in 1945, Delicate Jerry’s Drive-In Café & Bar was located at 3825 South Carrollton Avenue and was a favorite late night spot, staying open until 3:00am weekdays and 5:00am on weekends. Their menu featured a full range of plate lunches but used to advertise that their “chicken was something to crow about.” Ted Andrews, the redheaded radio announcer for the New Orleans Pelicans, used to announce for “slacks from Nowak’s and a dinner at Delicate Jerry’s” to the Pelican player who had just hit a home run. The restaurant was a favorite of Pelican players such as Danny Murtaugh and Elroy Face. The business closed in 1957. Owner Joseph Peter Accardo, Jr. died in 2003.
The general area was also home to the original Ye Olde College Inn and the Home Plate Inn on Tulane Avenue across from old Pelican Stadium. Luckily, the last man standing is the Ye Olde College Inn, although in a different building on the same block.

Sal’s Sea Food
The corner of Bienville and Burgundy Streets was anchored by Sal’s Sea Food at 232 – 234 Burgundy Street. In addition to the fine collection of signs, his menu was printed on the window to the right side of the entrance. There was an entrance to the Victoria Hotel on the far left side of the building on the Bienville Street side and the main entrance was on the right side on Burgundy. The Greek Club was on the far right side of the building at 236 Burgundy Street. On the far right corner of the building was a shop called Pet Mart.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,December 2
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Friday, December 13 · 5 - 6:30pm CST
Location
The Garden District Book Shop
2727 Prytania Street New Orleans, LA 70130
Gypsy-Rose Blanchard will be at the Garden District Book Shop December 13 for an author meet & greet for her memoir My Time to Stand.
A victim of her mother’s Munchausen by proxy and child abuse survivor, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard’s unique and controversial case made headlines across the world. Now, she’s finally free to start living her life on her terms—and to tell her own story as only she can.
Forced to use a wheelchair in public and endure a lifetime of faux illness, fraud, and exploitation, Gypsy was subjected not only to her mother’s medical, physical, and emotional abuse, but deprived of childhood milestones. Prevented from attending school or socializing, Gypsy’s formative years were defined by pain and isolation.
After serving 8 years in prison for the role she played in her mother Dee Dee’s murder, Gypsy is embracing her fresh start—and reminding all of us that it’s never too late. Featuring Blanchard family photos and new facts about Gypsy’s life that she previously kept private, My Time to Stand offers an unprecedented look at the real Gypsy proudly embarking on her ongoing journey to recovery and self-discovery.
The evening will begin at 5:00 PM. Early Bird tickets are now on sale for $35 and include a signed copy of My Time to Stand and a photo opp with Gypsy. Guests are encouraged to knock out some holiday shopping while they wait around The Rink.

New Orleans Bowl matchup is set. See which teams will play in Dec. 19 game.
Georgia Southern and Sam Houston State will meet in the 24th New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 19 in the Caesars Superdome.
Kickoff for the first meeting between the two schools is 6 p.m. The game will air on ESPN2.
“This matchup is an incredible opportunity to showcase the hospitality of New Orleans,” bowl executive director Billy Ferrante said.
Georgia Southern (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt) finished second to Marshall in the league’s Eastern Division despite a 24-23 victory against the Thundering Herd. Late-season losses to Old Dominion and Troy denied the Eagles the championship game berth.
Sam Houston (9-3, 6-2 Conference USA) would have played Jacksonville State for the league title if Western Kentucky did not defeat the Gamecocks, 19-17, on a last-second field goal last week.
Still it’s been a significant year for the Bearcats, who are playing in their first bowl game in the program’s second season at the FBS level.
However, Sam Houston will be without longtime coach K.C. Keeler was named the coach at Temple earlier this week after 11 seasons at the Huntsville, Texas, school.
Offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen and assistant head coach John Johnson are in charge of the team for the bowl game according to athletic director Bobby Williams, who added that both are under consideration to succeed Keeler.
“Coaching changes are never easy,” Williams said. “But they also give you a chance to evaluate your program and we have a very strong candidate pool thanks to the job K.C. did.
“At the same time, it’s very important to us to make this the best bowl experience possible for the players who have put in so much strong work to get us into this position.”
Georgia Southern is in its seventh bowl in 10 years at the FBS level and the third straight under former Southern Cal coach Clay Helton. The Eagles improved from 6-7 the last two years.
It’s the second New Orleans Bowl appearance for Georgia Southern. The first came in the COVID-affected 2020 season, which saw 11 bowls cancelled when the Eagles played Louisiana Tech in a virtually empty Superdome due to game restrictions that also limited the teams not coming to New Orleans until the day before the game and leaving immediately thereafter.
“Billy and his staff did their best under the circumstances,” said Georgia Southern athletic director Jared Benko, who was then deputy athletic director. “The best thing was the outcome (Georgia Southern won, 35-3).
“Now we’re getting to return to Eagle Nation behind us. Our fans love going to bowl games and are especially looking forward to coming to a great city like New Orleans.”
Likewise, Williams said, Sam Houston fans will be enthused about coming to New Orleans.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians
The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.
Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.
Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.
And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
