Nice Work, Nola!
Sergeant Kevin Harrington and his K-9 Nola have spent the last 6 weeks training in Middleboro at professional Canine Services. Through both rain and shine, the team trained to earn Nola's certificate in Friendly Find /Tracking of missing people.
Plymouth County District Attorney's Office Comfort Dog Program hosted this pilot program taught by Charlie Young and Pat Martin. Sergeant Harrington Nola attended with her classmates: Sasha, Aggie, Lexi and Blue.
Nola successfully eared her certificate, and the Whitman PD couldn't be prouder!
The Whitman Police Department posted, "It was incredible watching Nola start with the scent pad on day 1 to finding the blind hide in the final week. Great job Sgt. Harrington & Nola. You make a great team!"

Historical Tidbit:
A Little Piece of Whitman in Boston
During Whitman's early development it was largely an agricultural town. It had large forests, which provided timber to some of the nearby seaport towns. Around 1790 some of that timber was used to construct the U.S.S. Constitution also known as Old Ironsides. The ship was launched in 1797.
The U.S.S. Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship still on the water today.
The Constitution was involved in the Quasi War with France, along with the War of 1812.
During a battle with a British ship called Guerriere the U.S.S. Constitution inflicted terrible damage, but came out mostly unscathed. It was due to this encounter that she got the name Old Ironsides. People commented that “her sides are made of iron.”
Eventually, the U.S.S. Constitution became a museum piece in Boston's National Historical Park. Today a little piece of Whitman resides as a museum in Boston.
Respectfully Submitted, Gregory Venezia

Brockton Area Prevention Collaborative 2025 Overdose Vigil
Event: Tue, Aug 26
Resource tables: 6p
Candlelight program: 7p
Massasoit Community College’s Quad
BAPC is made up of five local community coalitions including the Brockton Mayor's Opioid Overdose Prevention Coalition, Bridging LIVES, EB Hope, Rockland CARES and Whitman Hanson WILL.
"International Overdose Awareness Day is observed each year on August 31st, providing communities across the globe an opportunity to remember those who have died from overdose and to support their loved ones who continue to carry their memory forward. Locally, BAPC commemorates this day by creating a memorial slideshow honoring individuals from Southeastern Massachusetts who have lost their lives to substance use disorder.
Through the power of personal photographs, the slideshow seeks to humanize the crisis, reduce stigma, and encourage compassion. "
"In addition to the memorial slideshow, the vigil will feature reflections from local speakers sharing
personal and community perspectives on substance use disorder and recovery. The evening is intended to foster connection, promote healing, and remind all those impacted that they are not alone and are deeply valued.
To include a loved one in this year’s slideshow, please email their photograph, along with their full
name, to photo.vigil@gmail.com by Tuesday, August 12th.
We ask that submissions come from
immediate family members. Photos must be clear, high quality, and depict the individual as they were in life — not actively using substances.
Screenshots, images of prayer cards, or low-resolution files cannot be included due to display limitations."

Climate Can-Do:
Pollinator Gardens
We can help bees, butterflies, and birds keep our world in balence with an easy- to maintain Pollinator Garden.
Pollinators play a vital role in food production, helping to pollinate a significant portion of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we consume. By creating pollinator gardens, we can help reverse the decline in pollinator populations, contributing to both ecological health and food security.
It is important to plant native species, so New England flora should be your focus. To attract bees, it is suggested to plant white snakeroot, bluebells, or American trout-liilies. To attract butterflies, plant New York ironweed, white wood astor, or purplestem angelica. Hummingbirds, as well as the other pollinators, are attracted to spotted crane's bill, butterfly milkweed, bee-balm, and white turtlehead.
Economically speaking, seeds are the better way to go. Plant them a season ahead (Fall or WInter). Already grown plants, though pricey, are easier and faster. Not only are these gardens pretty to look at, it will save you some time with yard work since you don't have to mow!
It does not matter how much land you have available, whether it is a four feet by four feet or a whole field, pollinator gardens bring life and beauty into our world. You can be a part of this journey to better our planet, one plant at a time.

Plymouth County Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education Summer Program
For 28 years, the Plymouth County Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education Summer Program has been put on by the district attorney's office to teach local youth and bring awareness to the cause. As said by DA Tim Cruz, "We use this week to have fun, but also to teach students how to resist the lures of alcohol and drugs and go forward to confidently make good decisions."
At Whitman Hanson Regional High School, fun activities like potato sack races, tug-o-war, and even a dunk tank were put on for the kids. Aslide from the activities, this year there was a performance by Mark Kenney, the Guiness World Record holder for hand walking, and National Guard helicopter touch down truly made the program a special experience.
Between water foam fun, educational experiences, and a delicious cookout provided by Plymouth County Chiefs, the week was another great success for all involved.

Serendipity
It goes by many names: some aligned with a faith, some with Universal Wonder. Serendipity is that thing that happens; unexpectedly showing up and bringing goodness to your life.
"Sometimes serendipity is just intention unmasked." ~ Elizabeth Berg
"Serendipity always rewards the prepared."
~ Katori Hall
"I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along."
~ David Levithan
"Plan to the extent that feels right to you at a particular time in your life, but always be open to serendipity." ~ Steve Leveen
"Risk-taking, trust, and serendipity are key ingredients of joy. Without risk, nothing new ever happens. Without trust, fear creeps in. Without serendipity, there are no surprises."
~ Rita Golden Gelman
