This Week's Lent Practice Community & Prayer

by Chris Currie

‘Jesus, remember me, when you come into your kingdom,’ goes the refrain of the Taizé chant that depicts the words of the thief on the cross with Jesus.

Whatever else this season of Lent before Easter is, it is a time of remembering. Remembering we are mortal. Remembering our limitations. Remembering we are dust and to dust we shall return. Part of my Lenten discipline in this season is to remember to try and start my day with prayer and to end it with prayer before drifting away in slumber. When I was in high school I attended a youth conference at Mo-Ranch and the session was led by a female African-American pastor on prayer. I remember her asking all of us if we ever prayed before bed and if we did, if we ever fell asleep before concluding our prayer. She asked how we felt about that? I remember always feeling bad about that or thinking what a terrible thing it was to try and pray to God and to not be able to finish the prayer and remembrances before falling asleep. But she encouraged us to think about what a wonderful thing it us to offer up our prayers and to drift off into the arms of God as our prayer gives way to our slumbers. What a gift to be in prayer with God and to fall asleep. A peaceful end to the day.

Mystery & Mysterium this Sunday

Lupberger Lecture Series & Guest Preaching

This Sunday, we will be joined by Madeline Lindvall Radman and Michael Lindvall, the father-daughter writing team who have written three mystery novels with a Presbyterian minister/sleuth, Ashes to Ashes, Earth to Earth, and Dust to Dust.

  • 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. - Michael to guest preach
  • 9:30 a.m. - "Mystery & Mysterium": Unified Adult Sunday School Class led by Madeline & Michael
  • 11:30 a.m. - Question & Answer Session, Book Signing Reception

Michael is a Presbyterian minister who has preached and spoken to audiences around the world, including the Scottish Parliament, Queen Elizabeth II, and the African Dream Academy in Monrovia, Liberia. Madeline’s career spans NBC Sports where she covered Olympic Games and PGA Tournaments, and non-fiction television including programs for Discovery Network, A&E, and Animal Planet.

Learn more on our Lupberger page. The Lupberger Lecture series was established by a generous gift from SCAPC members Ed and Donna Lupberger. Copies of the M.M. Lindvall books will be available for sale at church this Sunday.

Adult Sunday School

Please note that all Sunday School classes will meet in Frampton Fellowship Hall this Sunday for a unified class, "Mystery & Mysterium" led by our 2025 Lupberger Lecturers, Madeline Lindvall Radman and Michael Radman. Learn more on our Lupberger page.

For the recordings of last Sunday's classes, including slides and resources from Betsy Fisher Martin's class on "Faith and Media", and Pat Widhalm's class on "Jesus Himself as Sign", visit the Sunday School webpage.

Sign-ups are open for our Spring Day of Service! Projects for ALL AGES include gardening, sorting and organizing materials, bracelet making, and moving heavy furniture for our Community Ministry partners. We will meet in Frampton Fellowship Hall at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast and proceed to various volunteer sites from there. Please visit our sign-up table outside of Frampton Fellowship Hall this Sunday for more information or go to our sign-up link on the Community Ministry webpage. For additional questions please email Pastor Sarah.

Wednesday Night Pastor-Led Study on Prayer

Before Wednesday Night Out dinner each week, a pastor-led study takes place in the Phifer Library at 5:15 and all are welcome! In keeping with our Lent theme "Lord, Hear Our Prayer", tomorrow we will explore the Biblical psalms. The “original” prayer book, the psalms can help guide our prayers and give us words to speak when we have none.

Voting Day Reminder

As many of you know, we are in an election season, with several constitutional amendments before the voters of Louisiana. Early voting has started, and the election day is this Saturday, March 29. As Presbyterians, we take seriously our tradition's elevation of God alone as the Lord of the conscience, and so do not presume to instruct anyone on how to vote. We are also called to be involved and civically engaged with what is happening in our communities and state. Elections in Louisiana are very often low turnout affairs, favoring only a few voices, and we encourage you to participate in the democratic process on Saturday and ensure that your voice is heard. Whether we agree or disagree on political issues, the world is a better place when Presbyterians are actively engaging the political process with their conscience. If you would like more resources from our presbytery or advocacy partners, those resources can be made available by emailing Pierce Young.

Youth Crawfish Boil Sunday

The Youth Crawfish Boil will take place this Sunday, March 30, from 3-5 p.m. on the Land Building lawn. Games, drinks, crawfish, and non-seafood options will all be provided. All 6th-12th graders and their families are welcome! Please rsvp to Chris Hazlaris.

How to Navigate Your Child's Big Emotions

The SCAPC Nursery School has partnered with Nicole Bryson and Rebecca Connick from Ripple Child Development for a program to be held on Friday, April 4 at 9 a.m. in Frampton Fellowship Hall. All parents are welcome! Nicole and Rebecca are a Pediatric SLP and OT team with a passion for empowering caregivers. Their goal is "to help you understand where your child is developmentally so you can feel confident in handling various behaviors that may come your way. This presentation will provide strategies you can use to encourage your child to work collaboratively with you in your home, and foster their social emotional development all while building a deeper connection with them."

YAF Crawfish Boil on Saturday, April 5

The YAF (Young Adults & Families) Crawfish Boil will take place Saturday, April 5 from 12-2 p.m. on the Land Building lawn! Sign up on our YAF webpage or on the SCAPC app no later than this Friday, March 28, and contact Tyler Wheeler with any questions.

Audubon Park Walking Group

All are invited for a walk in the park on Sunday, April 6! This is a chance for churchgoers of all ages to share fellowship and exercise in the fresh air together. We will meet at 5 p.m. in front of the Land Building, make one loop around the Audubon Park track and return.

Home Communion

On Monday and Tuesday, April 7 and 8, our pastors will be bringing home communion to those who are unable to attend worship. If you or someone you know would like home communion, please notify our parish associate, Miriam Hollar, at miriam@scapc.org.

Join the Global Ministry Committee!

Aden Program Activities

While on their Spring Break, Assistant Director Kat Songy's grandchildren Asher and Angelle came to visit and loved spending time with our Aden Program participants. Angelle led a picture card matching game, and Asher 'volunteered' to wear bunny ears for a game of ring toss!

PW Easter Egg Hunt - April 13

Your payment is your reservation! Please make checks payable to SCAPC with "bread making" in the memo and bring/mail to the church office, 1545 State Street, NOLA 70118.

Liberty's Kitchen

Liberty’s Kitchen, one of SCAPC's 20 Community Ministry partners, is a skill development program for youth ages 16 to 24. The 12-week paid program focuses on training for employment in food services. To give their interns more flexibility, recently Liberty’s Kitchen has, in conjunction with industry and educational partners, added training in HVAC, automotive maintenance, and welding. Members of the congregation can help Liberty’s Kitinen in several ways: dine at the café at 300 N. Broad Street next to the Whole Foods store; use their catering service; enjoy Guest Chef nights; rent the café for events; or consider joining the Board. To learn more, go to libertyskitchen.org.

Tree Planting with SOUL

Last Saturday, a host of SCAPC folks volunteered with SOUL (Sustaining Our Urban Landscape), planting trees to stave off flooding, reduce pollution, improve community health, and provide beauty and shade. Pictured here back row from left are Nick Favret, Ashlin Murphy, Gill Egan, David Weiser, Caroline Gill, Rachel Judson, and Jacob Bruno. Middle row from left are Mary Carroll Waller, Tyler Wheeler, and Rachel Lin, and in the foreground from left are Matt McCann (who is a SOUL team leader!), Craig Egan, and Mike Pugh.

POLO Party

Lots of giggles and fun were had at Sunday's POLO (Parents of Little Ones) Party! Pictured here are Eleanor and Camille Rault and Rebecca McLeod.

Author Visit at Yak, Snack & Read

Earlier this month, the 40/50's Yak, Snack & Read book club was joined by authors (and 2025 SCAPC Lupberger Lecturers) Madeline Radman Lindvall and Michael Lindvall! Madeline and Michael are the father-daugther authors behind the Ludington-van der Burg mystery series. The group discussed M.M. Lindvall's first novel, Ashes to Ashes, with Madeline and Michael via Zoom. Pictured clockwise from front are Michele Murphy, Thomas Schulingkamp, Phil McCann, April Weiser, Dawn Talbot, Chris Currie, Michelle Baker, and David Weiser.

Our congratulations go out to Meg and Stephen Chernekoff on the birth of their son, Russell Palmer Chernekoff, who was born on February 28th! He is the grandson of Nancy and Parke Ellis.
